Playstation
A Bit Special
Denki Groove is a funky techno chap lending his tunes to this deviously devilish mini game compilation. Players must complete tasks in the game which is like the more familiar Made in Wario and its ilk mini game series. However the games have a darker edge more in line with cult cracker Baito Hell on the PSP. A young lad must chop wood by a simple button press, but the old man helper will sneak on a pink bunny rabbit from time to time. Players must hurtle off in a race of chicken: the winner being the one who can stop closest to the cliff edge without flying off it. A Wolfenstein style avatar has plenty of sneaky glances left to right as he counts the folk strolling along the street. A real underground favourite in Japan and after a few minutes its easy to see why.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Collectable demo disk of the fine Playstation release in which superlatives fail to touch on the sheer brilliance of this 2D fighting game. A worthy rival to Street Fighter and Capcom, yet not quite as popular possibly down to the special move controls.
Playstation
Rhythm
Gives wannabee gamers the chance to strum their way to the highest score, most likely to the dismay of any onlookers. Hit the high notes or see your air guitar fall pretty flat.
Playstation
Shooter
Light gun game full of fun and a real pleasure to play as a result. The conversion doesn’t betray its arcade roots and the levels are zippy with players being thrown into the fray to stop a car heading straight for them, keep a can up in the air in a shooting version of keepy upy or shooting the fleeces off poor sheep that scamper by. Known in the West as Point Blank 2.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Luscious pastel palette swished across the screen to bring a Capcom like quality to the weighty Gundam series whilst serving to bring a springier feel to the fighting action. And the gaming mechanics are just as honed as any Capcom title with Cyberbots springing to mind. Some on screen characters are so colossus to not actually be fully on screen with the human character avatars at the bottom reminding us of each pugilists humanity.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Draws on the Gundam world excellently to produce a full on 2D fighter worthy of the license. With obligatory story and versus modes comes a time attack challenge and survival mode. Reminiscent in parts of Capcom’s finer works, their isn’t much more of a complement we can pay.
Playstation
Simulation
A fine adventure as players juggle school life with the age-old dilemma of battling mecha. The city exploration is done in tidy 3D with the back streets looking fine.
Playstation
Sports
A great conversion of the original manga source into game format drawing heavily on the boxing themed source material which adds much to the overall package. Hard training (and plenty of raw eggs) are a requisite to train up the young pugilist in this man management game.
Playstation
Simulation
Quite an underpopulated genre in the firework display genre. Players wander the fantasy castle setting their favourite fireworks in the correct locales and then detonating them in order in time to the orchestral score. Subtitled Fantast.
Playstation
Sports
Pound the streets and the beaches of Waikiki and surrounds in this jogging simulator which tells you how many calories you’ve burnt up. Also has a time attack mode for when you’re feeling particularly fit and healthy.
Playstation
Simulation
Historical themed romantic adventure with language of the era and good manner to match too.
Playstation
Puzzle
Take on the Puyo Puyo master plan where players align four of the same coloured bug eyed balls with saccharine sweet characters and plenty of cutesy sound effects. Does actually add to the genre though and is a well respected series.
Playstation
Action
Charlie must tweak switches and jump through doughnut hoops to complete the rendered puzzle level and bear the bad egg boss. Known as Eggs of Steel in the West.
Playstation
Platform
A very likeable 2D platformer in which our hero is joined by a batch of eggs. These eggs will in turn hatch into animals that assist our Hermie on his way to platform hopping nirvana by attacking adversaries. Some require a little assistance such as the turtle that can only be gently hoofed towards an advancing adversary. But be kind to them and you will be rewarded by getting a helping hand (paw) out of a tricky situation.
Playstation
Simulation
Plenty more goings on than meets the eye in terms of supernatural demons as the Japanese board game gets an exciting adventure as only a top developer could do.
Playstation
Simulation
A nice curio for the Playstation that comes with cable to link players phones to the console to be able to use the home and phone version of the virtual pet Toro’s games.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Karate style fighting game with a vast array of texture mapped polygon protagonists to choose from – including a martial artist sporting a very fetching afro. Also has events, wood breaking and training by the sea in true karate style.
Playstation
Sports
Night time street racing bringing the mange to life. The dark tracks are realistically only illuminated by the cars headlights keeping the players one the edge of their (tiger effect covered) seats as it makes it hard to know what lies ahead. Also cleverly reduces the CPU workload making it whiz along on the PSX hardware.
Playstation
RPG
From the anime series comes this spin off adventure with original story and plenty of stunningly realised scenes.

Simulation
Developed by Marvelous Entertainment, this anime take makes good use of the license and the artistic merit is worthy of its prime time slot it enjoyed since disposing Sakura Wars of the honour. Known in Japan as Muteki Oh Trizenon. The Tri of the title comes from the three mysterious objects that arrived in Japan from deep space in ancient times. Fearing their powers, the locals buried them deep below but now powerful robot Zenon has awakened! Not wishing to sound like the back of a box too much, the game involves plenty of anime streamed straight from the series alongside fun mini games of fishing and dancing to enjoy.

Playstation
A Bit Special
Plenty of fun mini games make this a great after hours title with punk penguins Rocky and Hopper.
Playstation
Platform
A compilation of mini games all tied together by the pretext of Rocky and Hopper being private detectives trying to rescue Pinkyfs cat from the mad scientist poodle. The mini games include frantically dialling phone numbers as quickly as possible, games of snap with animal sounds requiring pairing up, bursting balloons, taking aim at a shooting gallery, a game of escalating simple simon and even gobbling up as much popcorn as possible from an out of control popcorn maker. As with most mini game compilations multiplayer is where it comes into its own. But the premise of unlocking some bizarre penguin adverts should hopefully be ample motivation for most gamers.
Playstation
Sports
Tecmo remains true to its arcade footballing heritage in this very tidy kick around based on the Japanese top two tier league teams. Flows along very nicely and has its own distinct feel over the more infamous Konami series making it a refreshing departure if not quite as long living.
Playstation
Sports
Improved graphical engine and subtle tweaking making this one of the finest PSX footy titles. Putting in the hours with the cones on the training pitch reaps rewards in the big matches – its always a thrill to pull off the flicks and tricks against opposition rather than training cones.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
The multi-discipline martial arts fest known as K1 – a contest that enjoys much popularity in Japan – brought to the PS courtesy of Xing. Features the real contestants realised in full 3D and looking very good for it with full 3D backgrounds and sizeable fighter models doing justice to their real life dimensions. Xing once again show their hand as cunning 32Bit programmers.
Playstation
Rhythm
Based on the boy band, bishonen anime with the real voice actors, plus an abundance of footage and an introduction from the series, Kaikan Phrase pits the player on stage needing to successfully hit the beats to progress. Initially only the anime’s intro song is available, but loads more are available to be unlocked. Each band member varies in difficulty regarding the speed and frequency of beats with the drummer being a particularly tough nut to crack. A Tour Mode keeps interest in a very stylish title.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Ticks all of Genki’s boxes: fighting blokes in rubber suits, cheesy 70’s soundtrack and our Kamen Rider himself looking like a big-eyed fly. Superbly captures the essence of the series.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Very fluid animation and the screen zooming in and out add much drama to the proceeding as the fly like Kamen Rider puts paid to many a latex loving bad guy and ensures a legion of armchair followers in the process. Very smart backgrounds too: impressive performance levels from the PSX.
