Shoot Em Up
Battle Garegga, Feveron, Kingdom Granprix plus Ketsui with the M2 gadget feature gives even the most grizzled shoot em up veterans plenty to get their teeth into, providing they remove the grenade pin in there already. The PS4 seems to have taken on the Xbox 360s mantle of master of shooters.

A fine collectable curio for Playstation devotees coming with this Winnie the Pooh themed mouse to help those progress through the educational levels of the game.

Shoot Em Up
Cave seems to have replicated one of its arcade escapades on the 3DS and it looks and plays like a treat. Taking a tank based approach to shooting mayhem, the polygon count could only have been dreamed of on home based, yet alone handheld system, only a generation ago. Power up cards change weaponry and add an extra element to the involvement in a very polished title. Not surprising with input from the creator of Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.

Graphically simplistic tennis game neatly drop shoting the polygon heavy approach for a more playable full screen affair. Rally potential aplenty with plenty of venues and characters to choose from. Four player matches can bring up language reminiscent of a Connors McEnroe match up.

An enchanting plot, sublime sound and intuitive yet effective controls make this one of the main reasons to own the system, besides the cult classics. Updated to the 32Bit big brothers, but many believe this was the finest hour.

A wonderous add on to the Mega Drive Mini in this Mega Adaptor which allowed owners of the proper, full release version (rather than this toy one) to play Master System (Mark 3) games on their Mega Drive. As such, it comes with eleven dummy Mark III carts and also a Sega My Card. But alas, this is just for fun.

Konami’s cult Mirumo world looking mighty fine on the Playstation with four adventure quests to savour full of brightly drawn fairies, luscious green backdrops and plinky plonky chip tunes matched and blended perfectly to the in quest action.
Sega Saturn
Action
Side scrolling shooting action as mechs go cockpit to cockpit with nicely rendered fighters and smooth backgrounds that smoke away in the background adding to the at war feel. Players also take to space similar to Cybernator, but the fight action is closer combat. The slick anime cut scenes are a given with Bandais backing.

Sports
Sydney olympic champion Ms. Naoko Takahashi brings her running attributes to the PS2 in this strangely compelling marathon game. Plenty of options to play around with including player stats and courses in what remains an under populated genre.

One of the most collectable Japanese Mega Drive games and much sort after for the completist. The sound effects include the hooter, squeaking shoes and, of course, bouncing ball and the presentation is slick; making great use of the license.
Wonderswan
Simulation
Board game sequel to the colourful capers of the pirate crew with players each trying to outwit the others to find it to the treasure – loved by pirates everywhere. Pretty animation and plenty of work has gone into this worthy sequel that has been refined but is more of the fine formula.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
With only 5,000 copies of the original print rumoured to be in circulation, this is one of the rarer titles for the Mega Drive and the price in Japan of the original often reflects this. Not merely collectable for its low print run though – its the finest shooter on the Mega Drive. The heroine of the title is a witch named Cotton, on a mission to find out why all the sweets have been poisoned. But it times it may seem like Cotton has had a strong dose of dental gas, such are the colourful, almost psychedelic nature of the graphics with genre defining effects. Smashing bosses, clean, creative anime cut scenes, original ‘chase view’ perspective, yet true to its title with free movement – this title is the best example of what the Mega Drive architecture can produce. Michelangelo would surely approve. Thankfully collectors can now own it and not just watch the original with tea cup on Antiques Roadshow.

An upright stand for the older, chunkier model of PS2 that is adjustable to also fit a hard drive, but can be used equally fine without.

One on One Beat Em Up
Quite a unique feel to Psychic Force’s anime themed fights with psychic projections being used to attack, hence the title, often with spectacular graphical extravagance. Arenas are quite cramped in making for tacit battles taking place inside a cube where the players levitate a la DragonBall Z. Solid play mechanics make for an unusual, but worthy fighting frenzy.

Snatcher style gameplay with a sci fi setting packed with tension as the story gradually cocoons you up. Graphically and aurally pleasing and well worthy of a second look.

Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet make up the trio of this compilation that goes in all guns blazing and takes no prisoners. The soundtrack is relentless, the in game characters given a millennial make over, yet veteran gamers may fear not as the action remains true to its pure adrenalin roots. Some may even be tempted to take advantage of the different play modes to flip back through a particularly turbulent section. A fine tribute to a much-loved series.

One on One Beat Em Up
A patriotic American wrestler called Eagle, an overweight policeman called Gordon and a gymnast called Carol who tosses medicine balls at you from out of her hair – it could only be Savage Reign. Interactive backgrounds including a go kart that’ll knock you down if you lurk in the rear too long. The Genki fave has to be the Chinese Chun Li tribute stage, though we doubt Capcom enjoyed it as much.

Masses of Japanese, American and European cars to choose from each with unique handling as Sega steers away from its arcade rally races and gets realistic in this Gran Turismo style racing game. Good graphical attention to detail seen for example in the whirl of red light left behind when a car jams on the anchors at night.

Spacious and well laid out with turbo feature bringing you closer to Sonic Team and AM2 than ever before.

Not so sure on the art of vengeance, but the art of this game is truly gorgeous: like a tour of Japan itself with high, snowy peaks, speed lined neon backdrops, bamboo forests – not that the old school platform hack, slash, bounce from wall to wall avoiding the rotating chainsaw blade gameplay gives any respite for sight seeing. Truly 2D at its roots and its a triumphant game thanks to the skill of Sega’s select ninja few programming crew.

A futuristic game of handball with cyborg suits and unforgiving metallic court as players get the steel ball down the far end to try and score by hook or by crook. Reminiscent of the cult movie classic Rollerball.
Super Famicom
Platform
Lovely artwork, low Japanese sales and the popularity of the GameCube versions has made Super Metroid quite a collectable. Yet it wouldn’t be right to leave this on the shelf with such carefully crafted gameplay. A truly expansive gaming area full of hidden pockets only accessible when suitably powered up, but the map keeps you right. Atmospherics other titles can only dream about. A true Nintendo classic.

This instalment of the legendary robot series led to a full animated version, such was its popularity in Japan. The battles remain immense and fully intense with anime style productions skills to hike up the tension and emotion. An epic battle sim and manna from heaven for Taisen devotees.

Plenty of foxy female protagonists going tete a tete in the Pretty Fighter 2D mould each trying to be the champ (with a side bet on the highest hemline.) Popular enough to be found on the PC Engine and Saturn as well with PSX updates.

Realistic adventure game with detective elements and a good choice of riposte a requisite to progress without a thick ear.
PS2
Action
Thankfully not a doorman simulator, but there are a few cauliflower ears dished out as you grapple various assailants all gorgeously rendered in a Square stylie. Also in another Square trait you can teach comrades various fighting moves in a trade off for hard earned experience points gained through giving out fat lips.
