Shoot Em Up
Mamoru Kun has a dedicated following from its Xbox 360 days and its easy to see why with appealing artwork, colourful characters and pick up and play shooting gameplay that hides devilish edge. Well worthy of reviving for the Switch – a haven for shoot ’em up fans.

Sega Hardware
Accessory
A wonderous add on to the Mega Drive Mini in this Mega Adaptor which allowed owners of the proper, full release version (rather than this toy one) to play Master System (Mark 3) games on their Mega Drive. As such, it comes with eleven dummy Mark III carts and also a Sega My Card. But alas, this is just for fun.

Brilliant Switch
Platform
Tomba is full of mischievous spirits and tumbles around on screen belly laughing, riding around on unsuspecting creatures, balancing on ledges whilst peeking round the corner in fine, early 2.5D platform fashion. Full of innovation and sheer gaming joy that makes the series a really treasured retro romp now revived from the Playstation original to make the Switch.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
There’s a certain magic to a plane based shoot ’em up – maybe its the giant enemy planes that must be taken down or the ginormous warships that scale across the screen? But what a Mach speed flight of fancy this treat is being a canned Jaleco 90’s shooter from back in the hey days of the 16Bit wars.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
With only 5,000 copies of the original print rumoured to be in circulation, this is one of the rarer titles for the Mega Drive and the price in Japan of the original often reflects this. Not merely collectable for its low print run though – its the finest shooter on the Mega Drive. The heroine of the title is a witch named Cotton, on a mission to find out why all the sweets have been poisoned. But it times it may seem like Cotton has had a strong dose of dental gas, such are the colourful, almost psychedelic nature of the graphics with genre defining effects. Smashing bosses, clean, creative anime cut scenes, original ‘chase view’ perspective, yet true to its title with free movement – this title is the best example of what the Mega Drive architecture can produce. Michelangelo would surely approve. Thankfully collectors can now own it and not just watch the original with tea cup on Antiques Roadshow.
ゼロファイア
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Forty-three tracks for adrenalin junkies from Zero Gunner and Zero Gunner 2. Zero Gunner 2 is a particularly cherished title for the Dreamcast these days.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
R Type tread boldly into the unknown world of 3D in its Playstation incarnation and delivered superb graphical gee whizz to go with luscious lighting effects. The weapons system uses auto targeting which can be a real blessing when things are starting to get a bit hairy. The revamping of the game shows what a seminal release it was.

Shoot Em Up
Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet make up the trio of this compilation that goes in all guns blazing and takes no prisoners. The soundtrack is relentless, the in game characters given a millennial make over, yet veteran gamers may fear not as the action remains true to its pure adrenalin roots. Some may even be tempted to take advantage of the different play modes to flip back through a particularly turbulent section. A fine tribute to a much-loved series.

Merchandise
Accessory
A fitting tribute to Mega Man in this large rubber mat that is from a trading card maker, but would work equally well on a desktop. Very colourful and a fine design.
NEO GEO CD
One on One Beat Em Up
A patriotic American wrestler called Eagle, an overweight policeman called Gordon and a gymnast called Carol who tosses medicine balls at you from out of her hair – it could only be Savage Reign. Interactive backgrounds including a go kart that’ll knock you down if you lurk in the rear too long. The Genki fave has to be the Chinese Chun Li tribute stage, though we doubt Capcom enjoyed it as much.

Six different Sega designs to these shopper bags to make you the envy of your local supermarket, if not gaming convention. Two styles to represent each of the Mega Drive, Saturn and Dreamcast.

Metal Slug X and Metal Slug 3 inspire this addition to the fab collection with Kiss in the Dark and Metamorphosis the stand out tracks.

Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting star in these tribute artworks that sit perfectly on desktops. The pull back design shows the artwork in motion adding to the effect. Neo Geo devotees will lap this up.
Brilliant Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Going back to the halcyon era of the crack MD developer Wolf Team and re-releasing this 1992 space-based, side scrolling shoot em up.  Genki thought we had mis-spelled its Mega CD sister title Sol Feace all these years, but Sol Deace only made it to North America on cart form apparently. The chip tunes alone are something to behold and the waves of enemy swarms judged perfectly by the developers before the boss rush.

Soundtrack
Available exclusively to members of the Square Enix community and of course Genki, this compilation includes some of gamings finest scores that really send a tingle down the spine right to the tips of your toughened gaming fingertips. Toe tapping tunes and stirring scores from Final Fantasy IV, Legend of Mana, Star Ocean and even a rare recording from the 97 Tokyo Game Show of Einhander.

Brilliant Mega Drive
Action
The original cart is a rather rare side scrolling beat ’em up from Kemco with solid 2D visuals and gameplay that they don’t make quite like they used to. Each character has their own special move – the hand grenade can certainly have its use at times. Simultaneous two player mode adds to the enjoyment of this very playable romp.

Brilliant Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Three vinyl record disks in a fitting tribute to the side scrolling beat ’em up’s fabulous score. Thirty five tracks to savour – the ultimate getting ready for a night out album, hopefully without recreating the fight scenes!
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of foxy female protagonists going tete a tete in the Pretty Fighter 2D mould each trying to be the champ (with a side bet on the highest hemline.) Popular enough to be found on the PC Engine and Saturn as well with PSX updates.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
The breath-taking soundtrack to the sold-out concert that was held in Kyoto to celebrate thirty years since the release of the Disk System version of Zelda back in 1986. Many may claim to have been there, like the Caravan gaming events of the Eighties, yet now we can all be taken on a musical voyage that encapsulates the spirit of adventure dreamed up from Miyamoto san’s childhood.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Fine, electric guitar rock tunes from Fire Shark, Hellfire, Zero Wing, Game Paradise, Tatsujin and others to make up the eleven track roster in this BGM arrange CD.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Superb tracks from the Sonic Wings series with the initial release, the sequel, Sonic Wings 3 and Sonic Wings Limited all included that really give you a lift and put a spring in your fire fingers.
Mega Drive
Platform
Solid platform title set in a spooky forest where the lead man shoots fire from his fingers to scythe through to a cinder the evil ghouls and demons lying in wait. Strangely compelling in spite of the coin op based, money grabbing difficulty requiring pixel-perfect jumps.
Mega Drive
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Xiaomei captures the spirit of Kung-Fu Master and takes players through the limestone cliffs of China, dispatching all and sundry with a well placed kick or inch punch to comically fall from the scrolling levels. Great to see the Mega Drive alive and kicking in 2023.
