Data West works wonders with the Engine creating great effects such as parallax, multidirectional, dual playfield scrolling all at light speed – its just a shame you’re not given an inch to appreciate them. Or maybe Genki has been weaned too much on modern titles recently? On second thoughts, maybe not. This is one tough cookie. Only for the hardcore.

Roommania is not you average game as players take the role of a young lad locked up in his small apartment. Well hes not imprisoned or anything, at least physically. Its possible to control their actions, a little like a 3D Little Computer People update. Actions include watching TV, having a smoke under the kotatsu, quick go on the PC, watch a bit of TV. Unusual and very in the distinctive Sega Dreamcast era style.

The Sakura series has a huge following and this is a mish mash of sub games, interviews, songs and of course anime from the celebrated series.

Similar to Tenchu, players take on the role of a ninja and must use stealth to succeed with patience and good timing a requisite.

Few fighters manage to wield as much weaponry and yet remain true to a balanced bout as Namco brings a true arcade experience back to the PSX cognoscenti. Arenas are impressive with rice fields, Chinese temples and rafts on water all linked by the common denominator of being able to ring out. Yet it’s the character design where Namco has made most graft and its fruits are a real roster of splendid scrappers.

Star Fox utilised the new FX chip to the maximum producing a tight 3D shooter worthy of the Nintendo branding. As with all Nintendo classics, the gameplay is introduced to you gradually as you slowly begin to master control of the nippy airwing. Great control sees you weaving between buildings, skirting under bridges and taking on fruit machines in no time… With lavish presentation including banter with your fellow animal wing men, Starfox is a Super Famicom must have.

Martial arts mayhem as Capcom’s colossus receives a bit of fine tuning to make this a well balanced, bruising encounter. Joypad dexterity and zen – like patience a must.

Suzuki san is a bomb disposal expert – luckily considering bombs keep turning up in the most bizarre places such as in her mobile phone. Once the cut scene has finished its off to work with your tools to diffuse the bomb within the time limit – often easier said than done on later levels. A special title worthy of a second chance. And it is one of a burgeoning treasure chest of retro tinged releases for the Playstation that weren’t going for polygons-a-plenty as was in vogue at the time. Instead devious gameplay lies at the crux and as such it stands the test of time far better.

3D RPG with clever isometric perspective which clearly says not a 16Bit RPGer. Yet under the gloss with the anime intro and avatars and the battle pyrotechnics, the plot is as well weaved as a plot of scalp on Mr Shane Warnes hair, harking of a bygone golden era.

Very cute and cuddly version of Sega’s Crazy Taxi with players ferrying around the good folk of the metropolis in this more Japanese themed edition. Great variety in the punters wanting a ride from old to young but the common thread of almost all being in a hurry to get where they want to be.

One on One Beat Em Up
Square’s first release for the Playstation and the Tekken/VF team members experience shows in a very accomplished fighter. The visuals of the game comes courtesy of DragonBall creator Akira Toyama and looks mighty fine for it. Never one to rest on such sturdy laurels, Square has plenty of innovative ideas up its silken sleeve including a plethora of grappling moves adding a more realistic element to combat.

All your favourite high school characters in a Puyo Puyo style saccharine sweet puzzle game. Boutique babe Ms. Kagami is a favourite in the Genki office.

Reservoir Dogs style justice deliverance was never this much fun in the film, but this time you play the cop as you gun down the men in black before they can shoot you. Classic arcade action which was always a Sega strength.

Gun games don’t get any better than this. Graphically more detailed as seen in ‘House of the Dead’, but gameplay wise this epoch setting title has yet to be bettered. God bless it’s Reservoir Dogs style rogues!

Many believe this should have been released with the Saturn instead of the original version. Yet the pressure of hardware release deadlines meant that the somewhat rushed VF came out first and this superior VF Remix a few months later.

A Saturn update of the Mega Drive hit which uses a full screen FMV approach to the graphical representation. An RPG of fine fettle which takes a realistic approach in that the hero must get sufficient food and rest to stay alive. Items add to the weight lugged around and slow the progress down. And any overnight sortie out of the relative safety of the town requires sufficient planning to survive.

Stunning visual impact showing the effort that went into this little known Blade Runner inspired RPG that snuck out in the Dreamcast’s shadow. Well worthy of reinvestigating.

Working at the Pia Carrot cafe over the summer holidays may not be as dull as it sounds with this dating sim warranting the Yellow Label warning. Trying to focus on washing the dishes may prove more difficult than first thought.

Konami tweaks its smooth engine in this update of the winning formula. Instantly playable but its the subtle moves and flicks that separate the Uefa Cup place chasing teams from the mid table outfits.

Spiritual sequel to Genki fave Kikikaikai and full of the same bizarre cultural references that makes it seem like sheer madness, yet thankfully plays like a dream. One eyed and legged umbrellas await an opportunity to spring into action, kawaii little ghosts seek refuge from Super Mario World, Oni and long nosed goblins look on from the shadows under the gaze of Buddhist statues. And its great to be back.
