Sega Saturn
RPG
Smart rendered graphics in this self-proclaimed romantic RPG.
Playstation
Action
The Directors Cut has an easier mode for beginners with more life, more weapons, double the bullets and ink ribbons to save. It also features an Arrange Mode with new costumes for Chris, Jill and Rebecca plus different locations for the items and enemy attacks. Those extra bullets are a real treat- Genki for one does not miss the empty, spinning barrel of the pistol as a reject from a Romero romp stumbles in for their chunk of flesh. A classic tale retold with some style.
PS2
A Bit Special
Based on the manga where the main man with a funky afro attacks opponents with his nose hairs. This time you get well and truly involved in the madcap manga mayhem with your off screen persona being mapped for movements in the game mini challenges. Absolutely mad, but we love it.
Playstation
RPG
Very interesting results of Square focusing purely on the action RPG and platform gameplay of this title, without the CG graphics we have come to expect. The results are an incredibly playable title – a real joy to savour with plenty of humour. The bosses are skillfully crafted and the use of the clock to alter playing environments a clever touch.
Super Famicom
Shooter
As Parodius is to Gradius, Cosmo Gang is to Galga adding colourful, cartoon sprites and power ups plus bonus challenges between levels, an end of game boss and even a two player option to the trigger happy mix.
Playstation
Sports
Crazy chaos as Crash hits the road and lives up to his name as racers spin and bump around the locales with multiplayer mayhem a real treat.
Sega Saturn
RPG
“Based on the artwork of H.R. Giger.” A dark and moody RPG in the Dungeons & Dragons mould. A must for fans of Alien.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Whilst the AM2 Team made a valiant effort, Daytona USA wasn’t quite up to its Model 2 arcade big brother in terms of graphics. Yet more importantly the gameplay remained perfectly intact. If only Genki could get that cursed fruit machine to pay up…
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Kazumi and co lock horns in the original Dead or Alive. A true classic on the Saturn. Revisited by Team Ninja for a make over proving well balanced gameplay withstands the test of time.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
From developers of Megami Tensei series, this off shoot has sumptuous graphics oozing atmosphere and plays in a similar mould to the Tensei series; as such recommended to fans.
Miscellaneous Games
A Bit Special
Having witnessed the success of the Astro City Mini, Taito comes to the party with this scaled down replica of its 1996 Egret II boasting SD Card slot for extra games and five inch screen, besides HDMI output. The save facility certainly helps and the real arcade cognoscenti can tweak the game settings as well as rotate the push out screen to TATE mode. An immense roster including Kikikaikai, Metal Black, The Legend of Kage, Gun Frontier, Ninja Kids, Tatsujin: the roster of forty inclusive titles is rich and varied. This is the violet version and looks very snazzy in it.
Mega Drive
Sports
Tidy little retro racer covering the formula one world circuit tour with split screen two player mode and some tight corners. Human were the 16Bit masters of the F1 season – an ever present on the winners podium.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Genki still enjoys the confined feel of Viper’s arenas and the delight found in smashing your opponents armour off. Japanese version contains Pepsi Man as one of the many hidden characters.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Gritty World War styled horizontally scrolling shooter that positively zips along besides the parallax skies, cliffs or well drawn clouds. As well as the gunning ability of the plane, budding pilots will have their bombing skills tested too as enemy boats zip along the ocean to try and get a pot shot in. Wears its old school credentials proudly and few would be able to roll up to reveal a more impressive tattoo at the retro bar of gaming.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Features six of the most popular voice actresses in Japan to bolster the blocky early Virtua Fighter polygon graphics. Follow up to the saucy Pretty Fighter X.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
A very stylishly executed one on one blood bath with executed being the operative word. An extreme level of violence remains true to the source material. And its an impeccable level of achievement with it being blatantly obvious the amount work having gone into making this a really special tribute to the license that holds its value very well down the back street game store. Some really gory finishing moves can be unleashed with dexterous button sequences. And the design of the in game pugilists is of such a standard that they are used for the cut scenes. Players can unlock a movie-making mode for real fans of the series and there is also a time attack mode which sees our Kenshiro seeing just how many foes can be dispatched in a minute. Subtitled Seiki Matsuyu Seishu Densetsu.
PS2
Action
A bedazzling, breathtaking but above all believable yarn spun by Sony that brings you in to the delightful Ico world in a way that’ll surely see it be entered on the tapestry of the PS2’s legacy. A simple must have masterpiece bursting with emotive gameplay.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Super natural goings on to this seemingly innocent adventure add that air of Japanese horror and spine tingling chills.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Sega’s AM developed model 2 arcade game made a smooth transition to the Saturn with some very clever programming giving a pseudo 3D impression. The Japanese version of this tooled up fight fest comes with bonus special disk containing plenty for fans of the title. Gang wars gone wrong in futuristic Tokyo Metropolis with loads of secrets to unlock. Worthy of greater attention having been released in the shadow of VF3.
Sega Saturn
Action
Punching through the land and dropping bombs to create gaps to squeeze through the gaps to collect the treasure on offer before the timer runs out. A vast screen on offer and all viewable without scrolling so players can plan their assault against the clock. Superb old school entertainment.
PS2
Action
Unfortunately Genki’s only run in with a biker gang was when sat on a push bike. Still it was nice to see a few faces missing from class. The underground, midnight bike scene has many devotees in Japan as many a sleepless night will attest. Plenty of Yankee style attitude and covers a niche genre very aptly, as you’d expect from D3.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Gets those French Fries laced with salt and watch the drink sales soar. Nothing too fried too close to the big roller coasters though as no one wants to see what their fellow park attendees have been having for lunch. Genre breaking title to treat gamers with an eye for the unusual.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A real treat from Sonic Team which blew away the boundaries defining what a game should be. Whereas some derided the scoring system, it provides a truly free flying gaming experience.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Super deformed versions of the Toshinden characters in a similar vein to Virtua Fighter Kids, yet with simplified special moves. Very tasty graphics as impressive as those of Toshinden were upon its release to a software hungry PSX public. The festival stage looks particularly nice.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Jaw dropping visuals and a story whose threads gently wrap around you before you realise you are cocooned in it. Whilst gameplay is on the rails the 360 degree firing range makes it feel unrestricted as you fly against hordes of critters to drop them from the sky. A Saturn must have title that announced the new generations arrival.
Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Held with very high esteem amongst the Genki Team, Sega once again delivers more palm perspiring action. The strength of the Panzer brand can be seen in it’s enduring love ensuring it got an X Box release.
Playstation
RPG
Square’s underated opus is perhaps a little short, but its bitterly sweet with Biohazard moments of fleeting fear mingled with Final Fantasy style roleplaying mechanics. But the eerie sense all is not well gnaws away at you throughout the twisted and at times unhinged story.
Playstation
Simulation
War sim take on the Parodius world where players can take charge of an army of octopuses, penguins or paper planes with the aim of capturing more factories and further build up your military might. Whilst the play mechanics are up there with the very finest of this genre, the game never takes itself too seriously and some high jinx ensues in the pre battle banter.
PS2
RPG
Such a monstrous, epic series with a real motley crew of devotees worthy of such attention with triumphant orchestral score and a very distinct look. Combat is superbly executed by the fight engine with imaginative special attacks.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Sound pinball game which avoids being over ambitious in keeping the full table view at all times rather than zooming in on a specific section making multi balls work a treat. Good table designs and cheery, pool room style tunes.
