PS2
Sports
Enjoyable boxing blast with tongue firmly in cheek. Each pugilist enjoys their own entrance to the ring with some style kept going in bout throw the facial expressions of winks and blowing kisses right through to the final pose and toothless grin. The training mode is also enjoyable with a certain group of combos required to build up the boxers stats before the big one, with other training methods such as aerobics available in mini games to extend the longevity
Dreamcast
RPG
Never receiving a Western release, the title allows you to play as a ninja amongst other professions – always a good thing. Popular in Japan.
PS2
Action
Tecmo proves there’s more strings to its bow than those of its bikini clad beach volleyball playing babes with this update of the arcade cracker Rygar. Set in an ancient European world the environs and adversaries are inspired by Greek and Roman mythology creating an unusual setting for an action extravaganza. Plus the scenery can often be altered with a whack from Rygar’s retractable chain and ball to open up new potential routes. Reminiscent of the seminal Jason and the Argonauts in parts, Rygar delivers superb action gameplay topped up with a couple of light cerebral challenges.
Playstation
Simulation
Fans of the almighty Gundam series will lap this huge sprawling game in a beautiful limited edition complete with model and goodies.
Super Famicom
RPG
Subtitled ‘The Mysterious Dungeon’ or ‘Fushigi no Dungeon 2.’ Guide our boy Shiren wearing traditional farmers clothing to help protect the good folk of the Natane village from demons by building them a castle. From the golden era of Super Famicom RPG’s.
PS2
Action
Konami takes on Capcom’s survival horror crown with similar camera angles, yet Silent Hill 3 cranks up the psychological tension to Hitchcockian heights. You know the bottom of the car is about to fall out, you just never know when in this rust belt town.
PS2
Rhythm
Takes on Konamis mighty DDR series but with a pop music approach incorporating Britney, Back Street Boys and of course Steps, along with tracks such as GhostBusters, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Galaxy Express 999. Cheesy background videos add to the thrashy feel but it all works well as players use either pad or mat to get in the groove.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Sublime cell shaded characters from Akira Toyama’s epic manga blended into the slick environs with more speed lines than a bike chase in Akira and comic book style written sound effects to boot. Brings the energetic high tempo pacing of the source material together superbly with ott satisfying specials and killer combos. Despite the vast array of camera angles, this cracking battle fest has all the feel of a 2D masterpiece.
Wii
Rhythm
An all gal adventure with plenty of rhythm action on the way as the remote is swished around with the grace of the girl band Perfume. The band members encourage each other along and a bit of paper, scissors, stone distracts and settles any tension quickly.
Mega Drive
Sports
Plays a tough game of American Football that makes for a good representative of the sport. The best praise we can heap on it is it gets non-fans on board to the point of comparing which plays to go for.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Impressive speed as the rally cars take on mountain tracks in the rain, atmospheric snow-filled courses in the night with headlamps and which programmer could resist the chance to reduce the draw distance by using a bit of fog? A fine 64 racing game.
PS2
RPG
Stunningly beautiful be it the in game, slick combat with plenty of visual pizazz or the lovingly animated cut-scenes. Smooth fight engine and an epic story, Square always put in the hard yards and it doesn’t half show.
PS2
Action
Capcom continues its highly original schedule with this cel shaded movie maker. Wacky action hero Joe must keep beating the bad guys in order to keep the cameras rolling with plenty of directors tricks up his pink lycra sleeve such as slow down and speed up for when things get a bit hairy.
PS2
Action
Lycra-ed up Joe is joined by Silvia and its more of the same luscious, cel shaded graphics and innovative gameplay that has its roots firmly in classic 2D titles. Special moves are easier to pull off this time and the non stop action with nice, subtle gameplay touches brings a smile back to the face of even the most jaded gamer.
Gamecube
RPG
Combines the fighting prowess of Sega’s Virtua Fighter series with action RPG elements in the ultimate fan service gesture. The game is played as young Sei who can power up by gaining moves from the familiar VF characters as well as take them on. Hopefully that doesn’t include leading the lad astray with Shun’s drunken style kung fu techniques.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Plays like a Jackie Chan film without the excessive fighting as players take the role of a Chinese detective on the trail of a murderer in downtown Hong Kong. Plenty of signs to set the scene and a great stereotyped chief with cigarette never too far from his moustached mouth. Plenty of friction between the player and his lovely assistant but its all in a good days work for Kowloons finest.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Very eighties feel about this driving game complete with night tracks and lovely ladies. Includes a bonus disk jammed with foxy felines hot enough to warrant a yellow label warning. Unfortunately, the quality of the FMV footage on the bonus disk is poor without the Saturn MPEG card being installed, but it still runs without one. Developed by Genki, there was another version of this same game done by Pack In, but that uses anime characters instead.
GameBoy Color
Sports
A slick Major A production that does justice to the series early momentum nutmeging much of the opposition. Utilises world teams for mini and large tournaments alongside mini leagues and PK competitions.
GameBoy Color
One on One Beat Em Up
Garish GB colours and some fine backgrounds such as the sphinx mixed with a generous helping of special moves making good use of the X Men license and the hardware too.
Dreamcast
Sports
A race title with a distinct ultimate selling point to please both gamers, conservationists and marketing men alike: the vehicles are all pulled along by animals, mammals or birds. Kangaroos, crows, owls, dolphins depending on the surface chosen be it water or land or even taking to the air. Handling varies as such, but the battle mode is where its at with Kangaroos wielding flame throwers.
