Dreamcast
Simulation
Bright eyed, bushy tailed participants make for a fun summer of frolics and deep friendship in the Japanese countryside. Just dont forget to bring your lunch box kindly made by your aunt.
PSP
Simulation
Get to date the members of the Akiba hit band AKB48 with real photos and voice acting. Its possible to call the members by phone or meet in person and players must select which course of action to take in response to the ladies’ queries. And with the “48” of the band name being based on the number of members of the band, players certainly have plenty to keep busy to fill their bikini photo collection.
PS2
Action
Atom, a creation of the genius of Tezuka Osamu san, is given a 3D gaming outing to do his seminal manga series justice. Atom’s ability to fly and deliver a rocket punch and other abilities are put to good use to make the most of the weighty license with the Sonic Team cutting loose in a 3D world.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
The prequel to the yellow label ‘Bakuretsu Hunter R’ is alot tamer, but still plenty to recommend here to anime fans.
PS2
Action
All is far from well in Racoon City. The finest Resident Evil title on the Dreamcast complete with added story scenes. Well worthy of a PS2 version with the DC original being a Japan only release.
PS2
Sports
Captures the essence of street night racing in Japan with customisable cars and some cracking courses to put your hot wheels to the test. Quite the contrary to the usual mass market racing games with bags of character (and the odd fluffy seat cover.)
Dreamcast
Rhythm
Funky DC exclusive dance title as players shake it on down to the on screen prompts. The beats that must be hit are well synced to the music making for a smooth sequence – especially when sampled through the DDR controller. Well over fifty tracks for dancers to improve their two left feet.
Dreamcast
Sports
Very appealing graphics with more curves than a championship F1 girl and all the official sponsors in there. Good handling and an impressive early DC race title that deserves a good spray of champagne.
GameBoy Color
Simulation
Not sure if its our northern roots, but there should be more releases in the looking after Ferret genre as the pet gets well looked after, even with trips to the pet shop to really spoil your companion. Known as Ferret Monogatari in Japan.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Anime style graphics and sweet voice acting bring this off beat title to life. Welcome to the tweaked, saucy, crazy, cosmic, Sci Fi world of Yuna – Galaxy Fraulein.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Sega Saturn related magazine with ‘Virtua Fighter’ comic of Sarah Bryant, playable demo of ‘Layer Section’ and interview with the ‘Nights’ team amongst others.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
According to the packaging, this case will protect your GB Pocket from snow, dust, dirt and even snow! Comes with cord.
PS2
RPG
From the spoof warning of jokes on the packaging, it clear this version of Hanjuku Hero is very tongue in cheek throughout the RPG experience and it works a treat in setting the right tone of humour.
PS2
Action
Played as a doctor who works part time as a very effective assassin set in Edo. In the true honourable style of the chanbara (period samurai drama) the good doctor works hard during the day learning of the injustices in town before using the sword to slice up some rough justice at night. Crafted by those master swordsmen who created both Bushido Blade and Kengo so the samurai credentials are unquestionable.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Fully licensed J League football game utilising all the madcap mascots from Japan’s top flight in a realistic approach to the beautiful game with visuals that shows EA means business. Makes good use of crossing – an integral part of any match but often overlooked in games of this genre. The cup option often comes as a welcome distraction when struggling on the brink of relegation to J1.
PS2
Sports
Take to the mountains of Japan for the hairpin bends to really put the car through its paces. Upgrades are obtained through pulling off long drifts round corner, or better still a combo of drifts. Beating an opponent will also attract bigger sponsors giving greater spending power. Night racing takes on a seedier theme in the car parks with all out victory against steadily more progressively challenging opponents. There are fan girls too that can be won over with a good performance. Appropriately hi-octane techno soundtrack to further fuel the rev head action. Known in the West as Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift.
Gamecube
A Bit Special
The ‘Kero Kero’ of the title comes from the onomatopoeia for the sound a frog makes. But no wonder the frog is squawking as it gets hammered around the course in a game of croquet with frogs instead of balls. Various conditions to consider too like in golf such as the wind direction or the fact that the ball is a frog and will jump off spiders webs or launch at passing flies. Comes with a really enjoyable four player mode to take full advantage of the hardware.
PS2
Action
Beautiful combination of the skills of the anime artists to draw cel shaded sprites with dynamic effects and intriguing locales to really bring the animated series to life. The tag option works well and adds much depth and fun to the frolics.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Developed by Camelot with plenty of hidden secrets like the mystery match up that lets you unlock the hidden characters – if you beat them. Gives the sport a more exciting translation to the console as it doesn’t try to be too realistic and can be easily picked up and played. And the ghost course is a real treat.
PS2
A Bit Special
Innovative, if a little off- kilter, ‘Ka’ is played through the eyes of a mosquito trying to get a good feed. The much-maligned insect can fly freely within the room to close in on a human occupant and try and hit one of the sweet spots suitable for feeding. Unfortunately the family, on holiday in Hawaii, are aware of your humming presence and will lash out if flying too close or the blood isn’t efficiently pinched with a tight joypad rotation. Interesting scenarios with the mother preparing dinner and the slightly voyeuristic section with the hot weather. Sony again delivers another genre bending title. Just keep away from the smoking mosquito coils, no matter how tempting they look.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A monolithic hit on the PC appealing to non gaming gamers with its simple interface and lack of gaming knowledge required to enter its mists. Has an eerie atmosphere that builds as the puzzles increase in difficulty.
Mega Drive
Sports
Plenty of thrills and oil spills in this overhead F1 treat backed by legendary racer Nakajima. Rev heads will rejoice at the fast paced action.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Falling into the survival horror genre as unnerving events unfold on the small island containing the seven mansions. Unlike one of its more infamous franchises rooms can be viewed fully thanks to the various options including third person perspective. It also features a two player simultaneous mode to set it apart from the competition. Good bosses to tackle as players explore the mansions solving puzzles. Also known as Seven Mansions.
PS2
Sports
One of the most realistic sumo games out there that utilises Koanmi’s gaming knowledge to not go too deep down a technical rabbit hole
Playstation
A Bit Special
As apartment manager you must maintain the harmony by juggling the various positive and negative effects of tenants ranging from cat owning old ladies to cowboys and ninja’s. Get it right and you receive a hefty thank you payment after the tenant has stayed for two years. But watch for squatters trying to cause a riot!
PS2
Action
Full on compilation of all out action mini games that utilise the relentless pacing of the anime to be crammed full of visual impact as tough as the attacks themselves. Memorable games include the parachuting sequence with an octopus parachute in a bizarre twist on the Pilotwings series. A rhythm action take on a RPG fight sequence in tidy cel shaded sprites and the mayhem of random objects reigning down from above whilst under attack make it hard to encapsulate the chaos into words.
Playstation
Simulation
Sail the seven seas with the vibrant crew of One Piece that is always full of fun and high jinx on the high seas. The ship sails an isometric seascape and the crew soon get into plenty of scrapes themselves.
PS2
Simulation
Evangelion themed pachinko title which captures the frantic action, noise and detailed video used as a background in a lot of Japanese pachinko and slot titles. The footage and characters draw heavily on the Evangelion world and add much to this sleek production.
Nintendo 64
A Bit Special
Amazingly recreates the feel of flying through the sky be it on the rocket belt or gyrocopter flying through hoops or chasing the thermals to stay up in the hang glider to get a better photo of a whale. Packed full of ideas – a breath of fresh air to the games industry.
Playstation
Simulation
Based on designs inspired by the Legend of King Arthur, these tables have a colourful, fantasy look and play differently to each other. A fine representation of a table top game with polished ball mechanics.
