GameBoy Color
RPG
An epic RPG looking like Zelda with plenty of hidden locales to investigate. In a fantasy style, the battle sequences feature stunning effects for the hardware and good, solid battle mechanics. Known as Elemental Tale Jack’s Adventure in Japan. (Not sure why Jack became Brian?)
Famicom Cart
Action
Quick thinking is a requisite as the floor shifts into different tiles meaning new, jelly baby like enemies warping in or players sliding helplessly across the level. Thankfully sonic booms style attacks can ward of the interest of the on screen adversaries, at least for a temporary respite, in the quest to clear the screen. Known as Mendel Palace in the West.
Dreamcast
Quiz
Large box limited edition with beautifully illustrated card sleeve with character cushion and four kawaii character stamps done in the style of a figurine plus inks. Also comes with Omake GD-ROM disk and full sticker sheet, plus Web Money card.
PC Engine CD ROM
Quiz
A great way to boost Japanese knowledge along with a bit of sport related info too with this quiz game froma Fuji TV show featuring questions on sumo, football transfers, modern literature, films, even ramen noodles if we are not mistaken!
GameBoy Original
Simulation
Poor old carpenter Gensan just wants a simple life, but once again his fair lady has been kidnapped and he must battle robot rivals in a quiz format. Questions are a good chance for Japanese students with heavy use of Hiragana and are on the lines of “How many bones in the human body?” Thankfully the answers are multi choice.
Mega CD
Quiz
A fine quiz title for the Mega CD with questions such as “What text features in the middle of the Mega Drive?” With multiple choice answers such as Sega, Japan’s Best, 16 Bit or, simply, Megadrive. We trust you won’t cheat and look at the console…
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Opening with an impressive Golgo 13 style assassination of the President and the aftermath, the sequel to Quovadis immediately cranks up the tension. Players take to their mech suits and move around the overhead arenas fighting it out against dark terrorist forces, kept company by some well animated avatars and interrupted by important developments via the anime cut scenes. Quantum leap forward in the series.
Miscellaneous Games
Shoot Em Up
The arcade classic R-Type gets a miraculous handheld conversion. The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
Switch
Shoot Em Up
R Type tread boldly into the unknown world of 3D in its Playstation incarnation and delivered superb graphical gee whizz to go with luscious lighting effects. The weapons system uses auto targeting which can be a real blessing when things are starting to get a bit hairy. The revamping of the game shows what a seminal release it was.

PS2
Shoot Em Up
Final finale for Irem’s vintage R-Type series with its distinctive projectile orb that can project the ship or be fired out to get amongst the enemy drone waves. The colour coded power ups are intact as is the tough nut challenge even with a fleet of nippy vessels to unlock and pick from. Keeping to its 2D principles the action twists and turns viciously at times to keep you firmly hovering over the fire button with such devious variations in scroll direction. Graphically gorgeous and a fitting tribute.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
True to its roots with organic bosses and power ups to bring back the nostalgia. The cut-scenes are a delight and the thrill of illuminating a dank, claustrophobic corner of the level with laser pyrotechnics is a delight.
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
The arcade classic R-Type gets the near perfect home conversion (albeit of only the first four levels…) The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Giger inspired blaster needing no introduction. A must have for any shooter fans. Many a joypad has suffered under the extreme pressure of R-Type Bydo’s bosses! Levels 5-8 of the arcade mammoth.
Playstation
Shoot Em Up
Packages up two of the most iconic shooters with the embryonic end boss in R Type and R Type II. Needless to say both look a treat on the Playstation and their old school mechanics are still present, yet soon command the respect of their students.

PS2
Action
Sony shows its understanding of the 3D action genre with simple lines in its space theme and good character sizing and camera angles to be able to judge jumps, rather than rely on leaps of faith. The Iron Man mecha level is great fun as players don the Tetsujin 28 suit to wrestle the Ninja Robot.
PC Engine HU Card

Motorbike racing game with two player spilt screen challenges possible. Some well designed courses to choose from including Irem Osaka, Fuji, and the legendary Suzuka. Brilliant Switch
Shoot Em Up
What more could we possibly add? Once the Saturn was the only system on which it was possible to sample this masterpiece of programming, unless you managed to track down the ST-V Titan motherboard. And Treasure got the Saturn performing veritable cartwheels in terms of graphical boundaries which are pushed into the outer stratosphere. But just as much time has been spent on the play mechanics with a highly original weapons system. Sheer class on the Switch for all to savour.

PS2
RPG
Superb and memorable battles as the developers are able to throw off the cloak of Final Fantasy and cut loose in terms of gaming style without the pressure of an expectant audience and sequel syndrome. Bringing down the off shore giant particularly sticks in the memory and the combat is quick and intuitive. A superb story backs up the hard work that has gone into its core engine and the presentation is impeccable.
Switch

Cult developer Beep is appropriately drawn to this distinctive looking shooter that harks back to the cel-shaded original for its inspiration. The look really makes it stand out from the crowd and will no-doubt be fondly recalled with those familiar with its predecessors. Sometimes spelt Radilgy.
