Not sure if you can have a platform game in the deep blue sea, but Shark Tale follows the plot of the film with snazzy, digitised cut-scenes as our colourful fish friend negotiates sharks and jelly fish.

KID is a dab hand at these titles and this is based at a senior high school as players take on the role of adolescent male pupil trying not to get in trouble with the females students.

Tank game which has a quick frame rate as players take out other tanks and bridges and the like with plenty of shouting in the background to induce some feelings of real combat and the chaos that ensues. Impressive stuff on a platform popularly not meant to be able to reach such heights and expected to bomb out when it comes to textured polygons.

A Bit Special
Ryo continues on his quest for revenge to Hong Kong and the mountains of China. Incredible cinematic experience that incredulously never received a North American release: such craft deserved the widest possible audience.
PS4
Action
The legend returns to the PS4 to bring joy to the many devotees who never lost hope of a revival of their flame for Ryo and his quest to avenge his fathers death. Albeit not a sequel, but fingers crossed for a successful release and the momentum that would create. Said to be the originator of open world exploration, the towns and cities look beautiful and the characters in them are either charming or despicable. And we need the less savoury street vermin for Ryo to dispatch. It wouldn’t be the same laying into the fine folk. And the fight system, based on the Virtua Fighter engine, is still purring like a treat, now also coming with the choice of fighting style.

Simulation
London’s most iconic detective sets the scene beautifully with the CD taking advantage of plenty of audio information. Plenty of trips around the town and back to Baker Street before going in front of the judge. Also features video scenes depending on game choices.

Not a pirate title, but nor officially licensed given the adult content of the game. There are two modes of play: Captured Rabbit and Sailor Z. Gameplay in the former involves three options: look, touch, and chat. With a title that translates as happy rabbit, thankfully no animals appear. Sailor Z is clearly a very unlicensed anime adventure spin off of the Sailor Moon series with the girls in pursuit of the evil Dark Prince that won’t be appearing on GMTV.

A Ring style visual novel that works the urban legend spooky story to its limit with some very bizarre going on to become a bit of a cult classic.

The Switch once again steps up as the bastion of all shooters of yesteryear. Alfa System’s very high production values shine through as you once again take to the skies in super human form to battle the Shikigami Castle which is hovering menacingly above Tokyo. Adrenalin fuelled shmup fiends will relish the multiplier opportunities pushing reflexes and retinas to the extreme levels of endurance.

Shoot Em Up
Vertical scrolling shooter Shikigami returns with a vengeance as players are rewarded for dicing with death in the onscreen insanity. Ten characters with unique power ups add to the variety and beat back any criticism of previous incarnations like a barrage of shots being flicked away. Plus its possible to change character mid stage to ensure the abilities of each fighter are put to the full use. It may just be better to go for the two player co-operative mode though. Keeps the player characters on screen in place of ships adding to the interest in choosing a player and keeps the magic of the Shikigami legend moving. Very much sort after on the Wii – big in Japan.

Very stylish naval battle simulation with real effort and plenty of skill having been put into the CG sequences to match the films production values. The secret weapon from a crashed meteorite is at the crux of the action and motivation behind the naval manoeuvres.

A colourful RPG seeing you in a quest to capture creatures in a dark twist on the Pokemon world. Once tamed the monsters are used to help free the land of evil beasts. And with around 330 creatures roaming free that’s a fair bit of monster wrestling ahead. Subtitled White Book.

Set in modern day world filled with monsters, Summoner gets off to a bizarre start in that you are killed and reborn as a different character. Very popular long running series in Japan.

The infamous Shin Megami series gets deep down on the GameBoy Color into dank dungeons possessed by ghostly apparitions making the stain glass and sunshine above ground a real breath of fresh air. Soothing musical score with lots of tension cranked up during the battles.

Similar to the Virtua wrestling title on the Saturn with the Playstation’s tell tale grasp of polygons and hopefully that’s all that will be grasped in this wrestle fest. Contestants have a wide roster of moves and the shift to polygons allows for more realistic representation of the famed, Saturday afternoon sport.

Draws on Japanese mythology to create a game worthy of being one of the classics.

Few games capture the heat and sheer scale of the battlefield like the Koei series of Dynasty Wars and its off shoots. Strategists will relish the planning and formulate there pincer movements to ensnare the opposition, but leaping from your horse and laying waste to the enemy hordes (easily identified in their plain uniforms and lack of elaborate facial hair) brings great satisfaction.

Captures the heat of being involved in a huge battle with the player fulfilling vital missions utilising a spear in the true martial tradition. Atmospheric lighting as laterns burn brightly to illuminate the enemy hideout. Perfecting the ability to sweep away the army of ten thousand is a must.

A pre order gift for those lovers of the Atlus series buying the 3DS version. Atlus enhances its reputation for fine game art with some stylish brush strokes, even by its high standards. The tracks are as easy on the ear as its art is on the eye too.

Action
All out sword slicing action with some sublime combos for the joypad dexterous. Sega have a superb heritage in sword play and action and this lesser-known, all-out action title deserves a second look. Just maybe not in the eye or risk a swishing blade in your direction.

Graphically squeezes the Game Gear for all its got and the results are pretty amazing. Its easy to see why many miss the innocence of sprite based RPG worlds looking at this. Imaginative, engrossing, enthralling, engaging: enjoy.

The final slice of Shining Force on the 16 bit platform that left fans awaiting the 32 bit sequels with real anticipation. Graphically squeezes the Mega Drive for all its got and the results are pretty amazing. Its easy to see why many miss the innocence of the 16 bit sprite worlds looking at this. Imaginative, engrossing, enthralling, engaging: enjoy.
