Action

Here we have all the games in the Action Section.
Famicom Cart
Action
Popular sequel as players bravely explore the cavernous levels that hide dinosaurs besides the obvious dragon or two. Fast pace and looking very prim and pretty on the Famicom. Simple gaming pleasures as Namco has a flair for.
Gamecube
Action
Gameplay has two sections: on-rails, Star Fox style and free roaming shooting. Gameplay takes place on the back of a dragon a la Panzer Dragoon. The anime based story revolves around being transported into an alternate reality where battles on the backs of Dragons are commonplace. Developed by Treasure.
Playstation
Action
A fine find for those like Genki who missed it first time round with RPG elements to the 3D platforming sections. The combat is all hand to hand by the player as opposed to turn based and works well. Very polished fantasy look.
Sega Saturn
Action
Utilising the Titan technology making for a smooth home transition of ‘Die Hard Arcade’. Gradually battle your way up the skyscraper to rescue the president’s daughter with the help of some smart weaponry along the way including bazookas. A refreshingly good tie in with unrelenting pace.
Dreamcast
Action
Full of Sega’s arcade prowess making it to the DC via the Model 2 arcade board with a few cosmetic enhancements. Multiple routes are possible but this is just like its Hollywood counterpart Die Hard in that action comes above all else.
Mega Drive
Action
Guide Ecco back to the peace of the pod through turbulent seas with swordfish needing a quick sonar ray to be dispatched and octopuses getting a little too friendly with their tentacles. A fine haul to any Sega collector’s bag.
Famicom Cart
Action
Manoeuvre the cleverly designed levels nipping in and out of lifts and doors to get to the goal before the agents take you down. Classic retro video gaming.
Famicom Cart
Action
Scroll the RPG style lands, but instead of stat heavy scraps, players must have a quick trigger finger to shoot down the fairies and dragons that stalk the fantasy lands. Having a sharp eye out for a shield power up helps immensely too.
GameBoy Advance
Action
Update of the futuristic Super Famicom classic with jumps, power boosts and plenty of mad machines such as Hot Violet, Stingray and Crazy Horse making it a great gaming universe.
Gamecube
Action
A wonderful version of the cherished series seeing players take a hands on approach as a foot soldier behind enemy lines. There are some fun vehicles littered around that make for great fun when commandeered such as the motorbike or plane.
Famicom Cart
Action
A maze version of Family Trainer where the young lad must run through the 3D levels avoiding bats and the like. Interesting use of the Family Trainer mat.
Playstation
Action
Solid Sony developed 3D title as players take the roll of all action Rosco who piles into towering infernos without a second thought for his safety. An axe is sometimes used to take down hazards, but on the whole its a hose a good supply of water that is needed. Plenty of fun and a good tribute to AM2 being a flattering imitation if in a more cartoony style. Known as Rosco McQueen Firefighter Extreme in the West.
Famicom Cart
Action
The deceptively cute Flappy bird must get the blue rock to the goal but other rocks and birds must be negotiated with careful thought to succeed.
Playstation
Action
Fun 3D platform escapades from shooter stable Xing which is done in that much loved Playstation style. Bold colours and sweet anime styling with the obligatory Japanese octopus complete with bandana making an appearance. Well worth a look for those that missed it first time round.
PSP
Action
Steampunk inspired fast-paced fight action with over the top special moves and a plethora of speed lines.
PS2
Action
Atmospheric anime fight fest with cel shaded sprites seamlessly making the transition from cut-scene to the battle arena. The size of the arenas adds to the gameplay allowing for jump attacks from the obligatory stack of crates. High production values to this accomplished tribute to the source material.
PS2
Action
Genki is certainly grateful Alphonse is on our side: a definite first pick in the playground such is the tough exterior of our robotic chum with a human heart. Some great scenarios such as bombing along on the back of a train like in all great Westerns. Hats off to this all action cowboy. Subtitled Tobenai Tenshi in Japan.
PS2
Action
More action orientated than a one on one fighter with a plethora of platforms to leap onto or simply get propelled smashing through. The real highlight is the Venetian style level as players leap from gondola to gondola view low hanging bridge. The specials are also a bit tasty too and override the on screen action by bringing up players in a small screen whilst the pyrotechnics get unleashed. Nice cel shading graphics and some snazzy anime cut scenes. Happy days for the import PS2 fan.
PS2
Action
Samurai sword fighting with skill required to master yielding the blade properly rather than just hack and slash. Worthy opponents have to be lured into making a mistake, before the steel blade swooshes in. The atmosphere is well-set with feudal Japan cut-scenes, beautiful buildings and obligatory cherry blossom.
PSP
Action
A heady mix of high school, a yakuza style teacher and a few students who don’t mind a scrap. Even a few maid costumes thrown in there – not too sure how they manage to get involved in the story. Plenty of fisticuffs with a few side quests such as fishing thrown in for good measure. Title translates as Wild Teacher In High School.
Mega Drive
Action
Full of arcade action in the Ikari Warriors mould, Gain Ground has a good half century of well varied levels taking you through the ages keeping it visually fresh. Plays like a dream in two player with the goal being either to take everyone out in the time constrained levels or to get to the exit. Rescuing a hostage adds another member to your merry band to choose from with often an ace arsenal that goes with them. A real unheralded treat for Sega action fans.

GameBoy Advance
Action
Famicom Mini Series which capture the beautiful packaging and the unforgiving gameplay of the source material from the Nintendo Famicom Disk Drive – never released outside Japan. Highly collectable. Goemon is known as Mystical Ninja in the Occident and is a Genki legend. ‘Ganbare’ means to do your best: enjoying the company of the townsfolk, but not forgetting to fight the odd ‘oni’ every now and then.

Famicom Cart
Action
Goemon has to be Genki’s fave series as our star visits towns and captures alot of the Japanese spirit in them. The superb action sequences purvey the pure class of the developer. This small cart packs alot of punch.
Playstation
Action
Isometric 3D style towns with platform sections and bosses to battle in mecha suits: yes its Goemon alright. The towns as a pleasure as ever with traditional warm-hearted friendliness to welcome you. And the 3D style boss battles add another dimension to the already varied gameplay. Overall the 3D effect has been well implemented with pretty shading and the proper balance between the trade-off of gameplay and graphical glitz.
GameBoy Original
Action
Genjin, or PC Kid, enjoys to dish out a few head butts, clearly a fan of the John Otway song. Here they are used ina series of mini games: dispatching adversaries back into the pipe they just popped up from, keeping the ball moving instead of using a flipper in the pinball style mini game, or more traditional platforming. The rollercoaster level in particular shows what a well-suited hero PC Kid was to platforming, just lacking the marketing clout of Nintendo and Sega’s more renowned mascots.
Famicom Cart
Action
Japan exclusive, four wheel drive action racer with smaller cars to allow plenty of on screen action. Feels like the inspiration behind Micro machines, but don’t let Codemasters hear that. Its necessary to bash opponent vehicles off the screen and quite satisfying to do so. Especially when tuned up with a raging power up on the go.
PS2
Action
Fast and throw away fun which is easy to pick up and play and not too much character depth are the hallmarks of the Simple series. Here players are stuck in a maze and must find keys and weapons ahead of their opponent to escape first.
