Puzzle

Here we have all the games in the Puzzle Section.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
A really off kilter action puzzle title based on the antics of Japanese anime oyaji Bakabon and so drawing on a rich tradition of characters from the series. Gameplay is of the vertically scrolling Puyo Puyo variety with very imaginative and distracting backgrounds.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Fans of the Jaguar CD may be as rare as the snow leopard, but those familiar with the add on may recognise this as Baddies given a Japanese make over by Banpresto. Players control little bald dudes within their own world in a fun simulation that certainly cant be accused of taking itself too seriously.

Mega Drive
Puzzle
Unusual action puzzle title where players must use robotic arms to grab balls from your opponent that cascade down the screen. Frantic at times especially as the count down reaches zero.
PC Engine HU Card
Puzzle
Move parts of pipe around the screen to ensure the safe passage of the ball. Like all great puzzlers, really simple to play; yet gameplay soon becomes devishly fiendish causing very sweaty palms!
Super Famicom
Puzzle
Genki has whittled away many an hour playing Bombuzal. Sadly not so many hours are on offer to whittle away, but it it one of those games that could prove not all hours pass at the same rate. The reassuring lift music may help, but the crux of the action involves detonating all bombs on screen. Action can be viewed from an isometric or overhead viewpoint to ensure the detonation doesn’t take out the player too or that the crumbling path that can only be crossed once is the right order to proceedings.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Clear the screen of coloured blocks by detonating them in chains to reveal the picture behind capturing various cityscapes and world-famous locales. Tactical thinking is required to generate the right chains and clear the screen. Strangely compelling.
PS2
Puzzle
The buildings demolition business may be under represented in the console world but there remains a bed partner to Biru Baku in Bomber Hehhe on the Dreamcast. Gameplay involves using the limited amount of TNT efficiently enough to take down the building – a case of planning and placing dynamite in the right formation. Its possible to move back a couple of spots in order to correct poorly planned moves – that is before the big plunger gets pressed. Battle mode allows multi-player match ups with the first to take the building down winning the kudos. There is also a challenge mode which requires players to keep within the strict time limits, though using less moves or sticks of dynamite rewards the demolition expert with a few precious extra seconds for the next level. Part of the ‘Neo Trance Puzzle Game’ genre according to the cover.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
An enjoyable playing card based game in the Tetris/Puyo Puyo/Columns mould when instead of blocks or squishy balls, players must align the cards to make flushes of the same suit or, for example, Jack, Queen, King. Pleasant chip tunes and bunny girls to complete the Eighties Vega theme.
PC Engine HU Card
Puzzle
Control a green lizard who must eat insects and spit them out into plants in order to progress, hindered by the fact you can only use your tail to climb the fiendishly designed levels. Possibly the rarest game on the system which received a proper release.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
Four player party mode option, but equally possible to take on the other three players by yourself in a game like connect four, except this time you are trying to surround you opponents sphere to change it into one of yours. Some interesting player face animations and nicely paced gameplay.
Game Gear
Puzzle
A very competent conversion of Sega’s gem drop puzzle game, perfectly suited to the small screen. Nice, colourful, big sprites and cheery music.
GameBoy Advance
Puzzle
Good mix of modes including the Survival mode where you must try to win back the gems that have been stolen from the royal crown, hence the title. Two player link up battles are also possible using just a single cartridge. As simple and addictive as ever – the ultimate journey companion.
GameBoy Advance

Super Famicom
Puzzle
Many Super Famicom games strike a good chord of nostalgia with Genki and Cosmo Gang is no exception with its uplifting soundtrack and fine, cutesy sprite graphics. Similar to Baku Baku Animal, various hungry creatures fall to the players side of the screen along with the blocks they can munch. Its possible to clear a line of blocks by correct alignment like inTetris. But players who wish to see their opponent suffer will also have to use the block munching animals to great combo effect. Old school and proud: well worthy of its VC medal of conversion to the Wii.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
Used with the Datach system, this is a mini cart collectable that uses the chips of the Datach to shrink cart size down. Puzzle fun based on the wildly drawn Crayon Shinchan world.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
The Japanese title translates as ‘Big Tile Fort’, a puzzle game using the mahjong tiles.
GameBoy Original
Puzzle
Viruses must be wiped out by aligning them with the correctly colour coded vitamin pill. Simple premise but it soon generates sweaty palm syndrome and prickly heat that even the good Doctor Mario would have trouble curing.
GameBoy Advance
Puzzle
Bumper pack for puzzle devotees with the Famicom classic Dr. Mario making a welcomed comeback. Viruses must be wiped out by aligning them with the correctly colour coded vitamin pill. Simple premise but it soon generates sweaty palm syndrome and prickly heat that even the good Doctor Mario would have trouble curing. Panel de Pon is from the crafters of Advance Wars and is also known as Puzzle League. In a similar vein, lines must be matched up but blocks can only be shifted horizontally. There are additional modes of play making this a deviously delightful package for the puzzle minded player. Just take Dr Mario’s advice and stop playing when you start seeing viruses and vitamins that aren’t there.
PC Engine HU Card
Puzzle
An evil oni has placed the beautiful Izumi san under his spell and its up to Takashi to break her out of it by, in true game logic, playing break out! Vertical scrolling and apples instead of bricks bring variety to the retro gameplay.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
Unusual puzzle title in which players control a blue orb and must make as few moves as possible in order to free up the required items from the switches and hieroglyphic characters onscreen. Very cleverly executed with an air of mystique about it.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
Mahjong themed puzzle game with plenty of bizarre characters and both training and tour modes of play.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
All the lavishly extravagant characters that make up Hanagumi in Sakura Wars spice up the well loved Columns formula. Really comes into its own in two player. Its lasting popularity ensured a sequel on the Dreamcast.
Playstation
Puzzle
Take on the Puyo Puyo master plan where players align four of the same coloured bug eyed balls with saccharine sweet characters and plenty of cutesy sound effects. Does actually add to the genre though and is a well respected series.
Switch
Puzzle
Funky, colourful and vibrant graphics bring the indie band and love quest elements of this devilishly simple puzzle game to life.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
Sci Fi setting to this anime inspired mahjong title with plenty of leg work having gone into making a very well presented game with plenty of material for the Engine cognoscenti.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
Very tidy conversion of the Atari classic, but not quite as slick as the Lynx version. Thankfully not as rare as Tengen’s Mega Drive releases. Coloured blocks must be matched in connect four style as they trundle along towards you. Every dropped block costs a life. Doesn’t sound much, but like any good puzzle game easy to pick up and compelling enough not to want to put down.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
A fine action puzzle title as players take on the role of the Simpson’s Krusty the Clown and direct mice to meet their maker, thanks to Bart, in the platform levels. Tactical blocks must be added and removed to get the mice to where you want them and the difficulty level gets gradually cranked up. Some good posters strewn through the levels to remind us of the licenses charm. But Krusty is, of course, always a great ambassador for clowns.
PSP
Puzzle
From the creator of Rez, comes another son et lumiere extravaganza requiring blocks of different colour to be matched up. Masive combos are possible giving immense satisfaction. Some breath taking backgrounds too that seem to pulsate to the beat and allow you to fully appreciate the PSP’s detailed screen. Sweet soundtrack that puts you firmly in the game’s trance.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Gameplay is similar to the ‘Puzzle Bobble’ series from Taito therefore not recommending itself to the colour blind gamer. The usual array of cute, super deformed, fantasy characters to choose from. Two player is where Magical Drop excels. The English name on the cover is Chain Reaction.
