RPG

Here we have all the games in the RPG Section.
Gamecube
RPG
A real Nintendo tour de force with Mario, Yoshi et al enjoying the colourful scenery, pseudo 2D look and Nintendo’s love of the gamer, never leaving you high and dry without a clue. So good it was remade for the Switch.
Playstation
RPG
Square’s underated opus is perhaps a little short, but its bitterly sweet with Biohazard moments of fleeting fear mingled with Final Fantasy style roleplaying mechanics. But the eerie sense all is not well gnaws away at you throughout the twisted and at times unhinged story.
PS2
RPG
Such a monstrous, epic series with a real motley crew of devotees worthy of such attention with triumphant orchestral score and a very distinct look. Combat is superbly executed by the fight engine with imaginative special attacks.
Mega Drive
RPG
More mysterious inter galactic goings on with epic battles supplemented by some useful items to collect. A superb series with plenty of devotees.
Dreamcast
RPG
Only four worlds, yet with bonds to be forged with other players to talk, trade and eventually team up the world seemed a cosy place. Like any good RPG PSO cleverly allowed you to mould you character in your own way aswell as their personal android and threw in a sprinkling of rare items for good measure. Touched on online gaming nirvana for a while, but now that Pandora’s Box has been opened the Holy Grail quest for the ultimate online experience continues.
Dreamcast
RPG
The second and final release of PSO on the Dreamcast improved and toughened up the AI of its various inhabitants as well as giving the textures a lick of paint, some mighty weaponry, improved NPC robots and new modes of play. Touched on online gaming nirvana for a while, but now that Pandora’s Box has been opened the Holy Grail quest for the ultimate online experience continues.

PSP
RPG
Charge through sprawling forests and what looks like the Death Star in this action RPG with the accent firmly on the combat which is now controlled by the player. Use of lasers and souped up swords give players much more involvement in the action. The draw distance is mightily impressive and the whole package oozes with big budget, triple A class.
PSP
RPG
Released on the tenth anniversary of the original PSO, the graphical standard and the speed at which lay revolves must be applauded. Yet the bare bones of the game are very much the Dreamcast version which caused such a stir in the gaming community when the servers were online. Co-operative play is possible along with other, less friendly multi-player opportunities.
PS2
RPG
Pushing the PS2 to the limits of graphical splendour with painstaking attention to small detail wherever you may wander in the Phantasy Star Universe. Combat is not as drawn out as previous incarnations and the controls are very intuitive aiding enjoyment no end. As you’d expect from such a weighty series the presentation is lavish with immaculate cut scenes preparing players for the quest ahead. Enjoy the ride.
PS2
RPG
Whilst it definitely dances to its own strategy system, those adventurous grey importers will find plenty to celebrate here with its dramatic story and colourful characters.

PS2
RPG
Delightful, child-like look to the rounded graphics, matched by xylophone like music and fine use of light and dark. The look is distinctive and the evidence of the hard yards Sony has invested is plain to see with responsive camera angles.
PSP
RPG
Fantasy style action RPG with gorgeous graphics to die for – fluidly animated and all in colourful, painstakingly detailed 2D. Highly original battle system where by you fight your opponents real time as opposed to turn based number crunching. And the attack effects look dazzling on the PSP screen, although unfortunately the code hasn’t been optimised to fit the screen snugly. Unlockable characters add to the longevity. Updated from the rare and coverted Saturn release.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
RPG
Princess Minerva knows a thing or two about fighting and gathers together a posse of suitably skilled female protagonists after the annual fighting tournament. Together you must fight through towns and dungeons to overthrow the evil Queen of Whistler.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Rescue the Tomato Princess and receive the praise of the Broccoli King to become a fine, upstanding cucumber. Possibly the strangest way to encourage salad consumption, but a wonderfully crafted adventure and in friendly Hiragana for those budding students of Japanese: be in language or culture. Known in Japan as Salad no Kuni no Tomato Hime.
GameBoy Color
RPG
An epic RPG looking like Zelda with plenty of hidden locales to investigate. In a fantasy style, the battle sequences feature stunning effects for the hardware and good, solid battle mechanics. Known as Elemental Tale Jack’s Adventure in Japan. (Not sure why Jack became Brian?)
Sega Saturn
RPG
Solve the riddle of the mystery virus running rife through the hospital in this (dare we type it) FMV based adventure.

PS2
RPG
Superb and memorable battles as the developers are able to throw off the cloak of Final Fantasy and cut loose in terms of gaming style without the pressure of an expectant audience and sequel syndrome. Bringing down the off shore giant particularly sticks in the memory and the combat is quick and intuitive. A superb story backs up the hard work that has gone into its core engine and the presentation is impeccable.
GameBoy Original
RPG
Big, bold sprites allow the gender bending Takakhashi manga to come to life on the GameBoy. Plenty of exploring and a dash of fisticuffs in this fine conversion of the intriguing source material.
Super Famicom
RPG
Dripping with atmosphere: be it the fogged over, damp, mushroom kingdom or the dank depths of underground cavernous warrens lit up by the cosy, warming naked torch. Captures the Japanese spirit of community with its friendly character interactions.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Quite experimental work coming from Sega, but we can’t expect perfection everytime. Certainly has it’s moments to recommend it to RPG fans. The appearance of Crow man ‘Kuroyasha’ being one of Genki’s favourite.

Gamecube
RPG
Such a fabulous world lends itself to becoming a role playing game and it looks a treat in cel shaded glory as Megaman whizzes around getting into the turn based battles Genki certainly wouldn’t challenge such a well-equipped character too.
PS2
RPG
With characters looking like they were inspired by George Lucas blended with a few He Man extras up against the worms from the film Dune, Rogue Galaxy certainly has plenty to offer. The action is very hands on with the space age setting refreshing and adding an element of the unknown to the RPG-esque action.
GameBoy Color
RPG
Explore the alien world in this colourful RPG full of unusual monsters as the Mon Colle Knights try and find the six artefacts to link the alien world to Earth.
Super Famicom
RPG
Classics nostalgic sprite graphics bring the rich Saga world to life – there is just something about these sprites that make them infinitely more likeable than CG equivalents. With a stirring Uematsu soundtrack to back up this close attachment conjures up an RPG of delightfully magical proportions. Tragically never released in the West, Square once again thinks outside the box of your paint by numbers RPG to deliver the stunning Romancing Saga 2.
Super Famicom
RPG
The final SFC Saga instalment develops Final Fantasy influenced sublime visuals with the series’ freedom to roam and select quests to deliver a highly accomplished example of the depth to Square’s RPG repertoire. The developer demonstrates a firm grasp of the Super Famicom’s architecture in realising a detailed gaming world with an aurally pleasing soundtrack to stir the emotions. Plenty of imagination has gone into the game world too with characters ranging from snowman to pirate via elephant and lobster.
Sega Saturn
RPG
The game’s story involves the pursuit of a demon who has kidnapped one of the team’s younger brothers. The team includes bespectacled Westerner Charlie Watts whose dodgy attempts at communication in Japanese far exceed the Genki team’s best efforts!
