Here we have all the games in the Sports Section.
Super Famicom
Sports
Known as Super Batter Up in the West, but in Genkis humble opinion looks far better with the Homepride Flour, Fred style Japanese graphics. Bases loaded and this representation of the sport covers all bases.
Super Famicom
Sports
Popular baseball series which evolved with every update making it familiar and yet progressive to fans of Famistar. Manages to recreate the good feel of the crack when batters whack that home run onto some poor chap enjoying his hot dog in the crowd.
Super Famicom
Sports
The abbreviated name comes from Family Stadium and Namco have embellished their fine baseball series with plenty of gameplay aspects to make it accessible to all. Much loved in its many incarnations on both the Super Famicom and the Famicom previous to that.
Super Famicom
Sports
Great very playable title from Human. Includes players such as ‘Rentoru’, ‘Bekkaa’, ‘Akashi’ and a very angry looking sprite called ‘Makenro’. Four players possible.
Super Famicom
Sports
The cartoon style approach of the Fire series allows the developers Human to add just that: the human touch. As such the fun and comical animation of taking one where the sun don’t shine is amply represented and captures what more serious wrestle titles skip.
Super Famicom
Sports
Takes on the mantle of the epic Fire Pro Wrestling series. Makes the somewhat tricky manoeuvres of the third instalment a little easier to execute aswell as unlocking all of the hidden wrestlers to be able to sample all the wrestlers.
Super Famicom
Sports
Plenty of hard work is required in getting the shoulder barges and sliding tackles in to get the ball in a decent shooting position. A real battle of attrition in two player mode. The midfield general of football titles.
Super Famicom
Sports
The tackling has to be the most satisfying element of Super Formation Soccer as plenty of effort is needed in order to get to the opponents bye line. Two options are available: the sliding tackle or the shoulder barge which may result in a foul if it has a bit too much barge in it. Great for a two player battle between two self styled midfield generals.
Super Famicom
Sports
A very speedy Indy car title that zips along utilising the revolutionary Mode 7. Concentration is a perquisite to be spraying the champers on the race girls. Warning: shots contain end credit shots (and terrible spelling!)
Super Famicom
Sports
The essence of Nintendo’s brilliance captured in a piece of software that draws in the beginner gently but demands hours of dedication to fully master the power slide turns. Perfect controls plus simple mode seven graphics equal the definitive Mario Kart version. Even the battle mode would beat other rivals as a stand alone title as you stealthfully attack fellow competitors. A seminal title and a lesson in programming guaranteed to give prickly armpits and sweaty palms on latter levels.
Game Gear
Sports
A fine F1 title that heralded the arrival of a console a bit special. Realistic in the sense that your team matters as in real F1 and careful choice is a must before you can consider clambering onto the podium. Also includes an arcade mode for a frantic quick fix for rev heads.
Mega Drive
Sports
Whilst not always obeying the laws of physics, Super Monaco 2 has some fine circuits to hone the drivers handling skills, even if its firmly arcade in its approach. Includes the Senna GP with tracks designed by the great driver himself alongside the World GP with its mighty challenge to make sure its you spraying the champagne, not down in the pits.

Super Famicom
Sports
Genki is a big fan of Kid Dracula and his appearance in this golf game adds much intrigue with special shots and a belfry load of bats. Dorabochan is not the only colourful, pixelated character though and Naxat have cut loose to bring us the best of their rich imaginations.
Super Famicom
Sports
Bit of dark mystery behind this digitised pinball game and as such the ball mechanics arent quite as smooth as a more cartoony interpretation of the table top title. But the tables are nicely done with plenty of atmosphere and this is a welcome addition of an undercooked genre on the SFC.
Super Famicom
Sports
The sequel has twelve teams for you to try and guide to glory. Hudson has had to remove the hu Stadium of the PC Engine edition, but there are plenty of extras to compensate. Classic match ups possible between the likes of the ‘Wholes’ and the ‘Buffers’. Two player mode.
Super Famicom
Sports
A snazzy Bob Smith introduces the action in digitised form as the on ice action positively zips along. The play area has been squashed up a bit, but it works well in terms of being able to spot a pass as the puck zips along from end to end.
Super Famicom
Sports
In the distinct Namcot graphical style as seen in its tennis titles making Super Sumo very visually appealing. Nice to see a bit of artistic license too with head butts possible, though the purists may not approve.
Super Famicom
Sports
An ace of a tennis title with simple sprite graphics that aid the on court action. The character reactions also help you identify with your player. Known and loved as Super Tennis in the West.
Super Famicom
Sports
Nice touches to this baseball game such as the players crashing into the barrier when they fail to grab a catch or the big screen lighting up when another home run is tonked.
Mega Drive
Sports
Classic Video System title from back in 1989 which stirs memories of Olympics past as players try to get their team, perhaps tactically wearing shorts a little too tight, to become the best in the world.
Super Famicom
Sports
Players select various techniques to go had to head against lycra and leather clad ladies in this sanitised version of the PC Engine girl on girl wrestle sim. Plays like a turn based wrestling RPG with well drawn sprites in a strangely sparse genre. Reaches quite a premium on the PC Engine.
Wii
Sports
Utilising the Wii controller like a golf club might get you admiring glances from the neighbours, but its likely you’ll be too engrossed in trying to obtain that new costume for your player in this cartoony golf game. As you’d expect from Tecmo the hemlines are unlikely to win the approval of the old course members, but looking this good there’ll be few other complaints. Fine array of characters including a possible guest appearance from Kasumi, warming weather effects and plenty of Nintendo style sunshine throughout. A fine back nine.
Virtual Boy
Sports
Only contains one course, but as such alot of thought has gone into positioning bunkers and water hazards. The shot power meter needs good reflexes to be stopped correctly, followed by the cursor on the centre of the ball to avoid slicing into the trees. Crisp digitised sound effects and speech hint at the VB’s potential.
Super Famicom
Sports
Football simulator as coaches drill their players before unleashing them on the opposition to wreak havoc in the opponents box. Well thats the theory anyway. A window at the top of the screen shows the action unfurling in a similar style to Formation Soccer. The view below shows the player monitoring, just like the Opta index.
Mega Drive
Sports
Not one of the most famous World Cups being held in 92, but this is actually based on the arcade revelation World Cup 90. As such it plays a zippy game with simple controls and quick turn-overs in possession. Keep it on the deck, lob it forward or shoot being the attacking controls with heading and overhead kicks possible for that moment of World Cup glory.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Genki doesn’t do tattoos, but if we did our first would no doubt be in the shape of the Famicom style of Mario, here seen in unusually relaxed position of umpires chair. Simple is the best: the full court is visible in screen and good use of shadowing and ball sizing creates a clever perspective with very playable gameplay.
PS2
Sports
Japan exclusive title with realistic graphics produced using motion capture technology. Includes the twelve top Japanese Professional teams with their full squads: even down to the mascots so players can savour Giants vs Tigers match ups. Some hyped up commentary helps to crank up the pressure with bases loaded and Konami’s experience in the genre with the Powerful Pro Yakyuu series shines through.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Sports
Davis Cup takes a simulation approach to the game, with interesting split screen approach allowing for good two player rallies as there is no far side disadvantage. One for the strawberries and cream munching Henmaniacs.
