Makes good use of crossing – an integral part of any match but often overlooked in games of this genre. The cup option often comes as a welcome distraction when struggling on the brink of relegation to J1.

Konami’s Major A team produces the good once again with this distinct football title cramming in far more polygons than the PSX version and crafting a different game as a result. The first football game to offer such big sprites and close range action whilst still utilising a fine passing game to unpick the opposition defense that would make Sensei Soccer proud. Like Nintendo’s finest titles you can jump straight in and play, but it takes a few hours on the lonely training pitch to reap the rewards on a Saturday afternoon.

Konami’s crack Major A outfit worked wonders on the PS2 achieving very near perfection in this fluid football game and plays a posession game for the top of the league spot. A real treat to feel like scoring is possible from any position, not just set places on the pitch. Total football.

Utilising the official license well with the proper stats and imagery to scan on the faces, this version oozes Major A quality. Promotion and relegation effect the next season’s play and you can adjust the players stats – even the manager. Includes the Yamazaki Cup for a welcome brink to those struggling on the edge of relegation to J League 2.

A football simulation where gamers get to choose their player type and then try and rack the J League. Try not to hang around the ramen shop too much. Very slickly presented as Konami once again makes waves.

Tecmo remains true to its arcade footballing heritage in this very tidy kick around based on the Japanese top two tier league teams. Flows along very nicely and has its own distinct feel over the more infamous Konami series making it a refreshing departure if not quite as long living.

Enjoy the highs and lows of football management in Japan’s top flight courtesy of Sammy. Keep yourself in as good shape as the players as the pressure from the fans and board mounts. Players respond to your touchline instructions and a bit of a dabble in the transfer market halps keep everyone on their toes.

Improved graphical engine and subtle tweaking making this one of the finest PSX footy titles. Putting in the hours with the cones on the training pitch reaps rewards in the big matches – its always a thrill to pull off the flicks and tricks against opposition rather than training cones.

As with each update Konami has worked hard on its game to improve and cement its position as league leader. The J League stars of the Japanese game look more detailed than ever. Opponent AI makes the series’ rivals look like clod hopping donkeys. But it is in providing the raw clay for the player to craft unique goals that deserves the highest praise – never channelling strikers down the same avenue to goal.

Can you build your team up like Zico to land the Emperor’s Cup and the title? Stay focused on the management, not your personal secretary and you just might. Full complement of Japanese league outfits complete with super kawaii mascots. Maybe cute team mascots are the answer to putting off football hooligans… Genki can’t see many people wanting a Yokohama Marinos’ Seagull tattoo!

Dodgy little FMV sequence with heavy sponsors influence: it could only be a fishing game. Fishermen and ladies get to take their boat out into the desired location keeping an eye on the depth metre in a cute, little sprite section. A line is then cast and those legendary fighting bass await as the sound of summer and cicadas rings therapeutically in the ears.

Plenty of different moves to select for the offence mainly variations on the theme of short pass, long pass, battling through the middle or nipping round the outside. Became a real MD classic, especially in North America.
