Playstation
Action
Charlie must tweak switches and jump through doughnut hoops to complete the rendered puzzle level and bear the bad egg boss. Known as Eggs of Steel in the West.
Playstation
RPG
The rendered sprites look a treat keeping that affinity to the characters which the 16bit RPGs used to generate. Arc is a bit of a lad, but the scrapes encountered make him worth sticking by.
Playstation
RPG
Plenty of pomp and circumstance to this epic RPG which entails good use of skills to progress through the turn based combat.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Superb compilation of sports in clay pigeon shooting, archery, long jump high jump… Pixel perfect timing and a good button rhythm are a requisite as Konami makes a big splash.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Stimulation
A nicely presented mahjong game with anime characters who lose a layer or two of clothing when defeated with the sword of the title.
Nintendo DS
RPG
The fine roots of the series given a Square Enix make over and looking superb on the DS screen.
Nintendo DS
Platform
The best-selling DS game and its easy to see why with Mario in his element in the platform levels and it perfectly suited to the DS handheld. Hats off to you Mario.
Famicom Cart
Simulation
Early Famicom release with bold primary colours and cutesy penguins to ornate the table. The bonus section is a homage to Mario as he runs from side to side bouncing the ball back up to try and break down the princess platform and free her.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Delightful chip tunes add a cheery, medieval banquet feel to the old school platform action. The hero is a pixelated Robin Hood look-a-like who nimbly negotiates moving platform lifts to collect the keys to clear the cavernous levels.
Famicom Cart
Action
Competitive platform action to help rescue the damsel, or egg, in distress. Wholesome, heathy gameplay by the lashing.
Famicom Cart
Action
Scroll freely on the open plain firing at adversaries and then tackling the platform sections with pixel perfect jumps. Nicely paced, wholesome 8bit action.
Miscellaneous Games
Shoot Em Up
The arcade classic R-Type gets a miraculous handheld conversion. The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
Famicom Cart
Sports
Some great imagination to mix up the action with a track and hurdle level, mountain path with wild boar, a section based on the tunnels of a pyramid as well as lakeside and riverside levels. The height of retro chic. Designed to be played with the Family Trainer.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Popular role playing game that unusually seems set in ancient Greece or the Roman empire. A good emporium is needed to ensure being sufficiently equipped to progress in the turn-based combat.
Famicom Cart
Action
The deceptively cute Flappy bird must get the blue rock to the goal but other rocks and birds must be negotiated with careful thought to succeed.
PS3
One on One Beat Em Up
Arc keeps the 2D torch burning bright as this illuminating fight fest celebrates all that is good in the genre. Akiba fashion culture permeates every pore, so much so you may wonder if it was developed in a maid café as a post club venue after the AKB48 concert. A fine celebration of joypad dexterity and visual pyrotechnics.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Kaijyu are the huge monsters, the likes of which give Godzilla a tough time. And with a title that translates as Monster Story, there are plenty to battle in this action RPG, all very nicely drawn on the fine Famicom.
Super Famicom
Platform
Whilst the gameplay is not too cerebral, the fluid animation must rank as some of Disney’s finest in a video game and rivals that of Prince of Persia. A real joy to behold as Aladdin uses his sword and a limited supply of apples to glide through the imaginative, well realised scenarios including the market, desert and castle.
Super Famicom
Action
Players observe Pacman going about his daily routine and must help him by firing a catapult to prevent, for example, a cat pinching his hot-dog or the toilet door whacking him in the face. Good, clean fun.
Super Famicom
Shooter
A very faithful arcade conversion lacking only in cigarette burns in the cabinet and jammed coin slot. With added battle mode. Hard to put down even today. Subtitled The Original Game.
