PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Horse racing title realised in the loveable Namcot style as seen in World Court Tennis with petit, detailed cartoony sprites. Get your thoroughbred to jump at the right time whilst picking up a handy power up to make that spurt for the finish line.
PC Engine CD ROM
Simulation
A life simulation game where you must guide a young woman through her daily routine with great anime cut sequences. Japanese title: Kagami no Kuni no Legend.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Bullfrog’s seminal god sim made it hard to resist improper gameplay such as sending in the odd earthquake to wake up your people. Made extra popular and collectable on the Engine by being one of the few titles to include a battery back up on the HU Card.
PC Engine Super Grafx
Shoot Em Up
One of only three SG blast fests and with the other two being Aldynes and 1941, Battle Ace was always going to be hard pushed to jostle for a place higher up the winners podium. Still BA makes a valiant attempt opting for an an internal Elite style view out from your space ship. The gameplay is far less cerebral than Braben’s opus, more on the lines of After Burner’s Top Gun triggger happy gameplay. Perhaps just pushing the Super Grafx hardware a little too far? But good for a short arcade style thrill.
Complete with slip card case and registration card. Slight creases on manual edge. Slight peel on spine of Hu Card case sticker. Light scuffing to card slip as is common.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
The sequel lavishes more textures on Toushinden’s ellipses and features some fabulous backgrounds from the peace and tranquillity of the forest stage to the flashing strobe of the disco dance floor, if saying that doesn’t make Genki sound too old. The detail is balanced correctly with playability and as such the speed of the contest zips along.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Sports
The hum of engines accompanies this overhead speed freak which thankfully has helpfully cursors appearing to guide the driver round the right bend. As in the real sport, tactical pit stops are a must and the right tyres boosts chances of a podium finish rather than just watching the fun from below.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Point and click isometric battles souped up by buxom anime babes in this role player based on the popular anime series.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Very stylish naval battle simulation with real effort and plenty of skill having been put into the CG sequences to match the films production values. The secret weapon from a crashed meteorite is at the crux of the action and motivation behind the naval manoeuvres.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Son Goku is the Monkey God made famous here in the UK by the screening of the NHK classic series. This game brings mahjong into the equation (no doubt Pigsy’s doing!) As the story sees our intrepid travellers journey to the west.
Playstation
RPG
Set in real life modern day Japan, you must guide accident victim Hitomi, not playing as her, but as the voice in her head. Its important to not lead her astray or she’ll stop listening to you. Beautifully realised in FMV, Square once again comes up trumps whilst changing the rules of the game.
Famicom Cart
Action
Any game with a guest appearance of Genki hero Xandra of Super Famicom Xandra’s Big Adventure fame is worthy of any collection in Genki’s humble opinion. RPG elements in this action title not very well known outside Japan. Catapulting around levels is great fun and saves having to revisit areas of this huge game.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Realistic graphics and a gritty, urban rap theme track in English juxtaposed against the Japanese commentary. Solid game of baseball from the experts at Sega Sports.
Mega Drive
Action
Guide Ecco back to the peace of the pod through turbulent seas with swordfish needing a quick sonar ray to be dispatched and octopuses getting a little too friendly with their tentacles. A fine haul to any Sega collector’s bag.
Mega Drive
Platform
Busts out the familiar Moon Dance as a special move along with plenty of checks to the family treasure to superb chip versions of all the classics. It can get a little surreal at times, but perhaps thats a fitting tribute to Mr Jackson and his flamboyant character. Just wait until bubbles pops up.
PS2
Sports
Fluid footy action, by far the most playable football series ever. Excellent attention to detail. Surely even Alan Hansen would approve.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Fresh, funky tunes from the Grev master blaster. Tracks are aptly named: Blossom Shower, Tropical Pirates and, in Genki’s case, The Curse Again. Twenty three tracks of sick beats to savour. Reminiscent in parts to YMO tunes. Full title: Mamoru Kun wa Norowarete.
PS2
Action
More action orientated than a one on one fighter with a plethora of platforms to leap onto or simply get propelled smashing through. The real highlight is the Venetian style level as players leap from gondola to gondola view low hanging bridge. The specials are also a bit tasty too and override the on screen action by bringing up players in a small screen whilst the pyrotechnics get unleashed. Nice cel shading graphics and some snazzy anime cut scenes. Happy days for the import PS2 fan.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collectors item for fans of VF. Meet the mysterious ninja ‘Round Shadow’ as he kicks back and unwinds like all good ninja’s do: by belting out a few tunes at Karaoke. For ninja fans only (CH4 Games Central?) Owners of five or more of the series were rewarded with a special Dual disk.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collectors item for fans of VF: watch Jacky about town in his sports car, hussling the pool hall or prancing around with his Dalmatian! Owners of five or more of the series were rewarded with a special Dual disk.
Game Gear
Sports
Joe Montana was quite a player and few will have missed his charming scaled-down version of the Mega Drive title which was as popular as Genesis back in the 90s. Simple interface and good action with fun two player bouts make this the football game to recommend to fans of any shape of ball.
PC Engine FX
Simulation
Romance and adventure all set to a typical game music (like you get lift music, apart from game music) and an imperial, fantasy setting think Heroic Legend of Arslan anime. Ticks all the right boxes and a popular series that spanned onto the Saturn and Playstation.
