Based on the epic Galaxy Express 999 anime, a 3D fast paced adventure with plenty of firepower. Absolutely must for fans of the series, but with enough on-screen action to sell itself to those yet to discover Galaxy Express’s delights.

Shoot Em Up
Conversion of the arcade monolith based on part two with an extra intro level. Tough and unforgiving, but the true shmup fan wouldn’t have it any other way. Never has Genki been so grateful for slowdown to get out of the many tight fixes that must come with trying to contain the expansion of the Bydo Empire in R-Type.

RPG
A dream collaboration between Square and Nintendo gives Mario the fondest of farewells in this last SFC release from the plump Italian plumber. Brings next generation levels of graphical prowess to the humble 16Bit console but as ever with the big N the focus is intently on deliriously fluid gameplay. And as you might expect from the Kyoto company, the game eases you in gently with controls fit for those unfamiliar with Square’s RPG-ing world. Draws on the massive potential of the Mario universe with the emphasis firmly on fun and the balance favoured on action.

As one might expect from a Disney backed title, the animation is incredible as Simba progresses from canny cub into lion with the ability to claw at enemies. The stampede section has made it in as a side scrolling scramble at break neck speeds and there are plenty of nice touches that go to make a platformer stand out from the crowd, or pride.

RPG
The golden era of Square SFC RPG’s came to an end with this masterpiece signing off in true style. Graphically astounding proving the time it takes for developers to truly grasp the ins and outs of a system’s architecture with this surpassing many 32bit efforts. Nice to see a bit of monkey still in Square with the ability to smash barrels and rip up hedges in peoples gardens to gain extra items. And its such attention to detail that bring the Treasure Hunter world to life.

Combat simulation with more missiles than a rogue state where players set up their defences and then send in the mechas for some nice action sequences. Plenty of appropriate military pomp to the music. Known as Metal Marines in the West.

Platform
A very colourful and little known platformer with a very manipulative jelly ball as our hero. The malleable nature of the protagonist makes for some fine platform manoeuvres. Interludes from the levels are set in small towns and even under the sea with whales to help players unwind. Known as Smartball in the West and also Jelly Boy.

Action
The flexible and sometimes dispensable nature of the Crash Dummies make them perfect to platforming. Being able to inflate also helps get through tricky spots in this overlooked platformer. Full title: The Incredible Crash Dummies.

Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Always a treat to see a bit of effort go into a licensed title and Konami does justice to Gotham’s finest. Platform and Batmobile sections break up the beat em up pattern, but the fisticuffs are as enjoyable as a run in with catwoman as you hurle enemies through windows with the interactive backgrounds. Such attention to detail raises the level of licensed games especially when looking this good.

The pinnacle of the series on the system as HAL proves itself a crack unit within the Nintendo umbrella. Some seriously motivated programming that manipulates immense performance out of the hardware. The gameplay is a delight with Kirby able to hover above the ground to gain that extra height with which to pummel the bosses be it giant whales or a Robocop ED209 look a like. Known as Kirby Super Star in the West.

Deep and involving World War II turn based war game that was never released outside Japan due to its controversial opening shots of Hitler along with a digitised sample of one of his speeches. Comes with the thickest instruction manual on the Mega Drive.

Sports
One of the best branches in Nintendo’s laurel rests on the GameCube and adds co-operative two player gameplay with one to drive and one to take care of the items, cranking up the entertainment. The classic ingredients are all still present with battle mode one of them, but the weapons can now be stolen adding to the dream finishes of knocking out an opponent to whiz past them at the finish line. The added tactical dimension is how long to hold on to weapons when they can be pinched away.

Action
More monkey mayhem as players take a spin inside the Monkey Balls and roll through the levels collecting bananas. A feel for momentum must be attained to avoid dropping off levels, but the ball physics are well designed making it always, alas, the players fault for taking a tumble or making a simian slip. Full of Sega’s colourful charm.

True to the classic source material as Tom must chase Jerry to the end of the platform level avoiding the usual madcap mayhem that usually ensues. Beautiful animation, all the more impressive when the rich colour palette and size of sprites are considered.
