PS4
Action
Fell of the Disney Fantastical with sparkling visuals and musical interludes to the gaming worlds that bring the magic to life. Seasoned gamers may get the feel of Nights with the aerial escapades and its clear this is a game from the fine stable that produced the Kingdom Hearts series.
Merchandise
Figure
The Japanese Rhinoceros beetle is a popular insect and Sega have this plush tribute that reminds Genki of the special Saturn game Nights.
Playstation
Sports
Intriguing twist on the football scene in that players take a third person perspective view of their teams star man and play the 90 minutes as that single player. The sequel is equally skilled on the ball with plenty of tricks up the sleeve to drop a shoulder.
Playstation
Sports
Combines the fun of pull back and go toy cars with the right blend of driving thrills and spills action. The cartoony approach over the realistic version makes it a very enjoyable ride.
Nintendo DS
A Bit Special
Great fun and very generously can be linked u between up to four DS’s with just one copy of the game. The action is light hearted and varied with Nintendo rarely lacking in imagination: be it dances offs, avoiding falling off a giant roller or avoiding the footballs Goomba kicks at you.
Mega Drive
Sports
Not one of the most famous World Cups being held in 92, but this is actually based on the arcade revelation World Cup 90. As such it plays a zippy game with simple controls and quick turn-overs in possession. Keep it on the deck, lob it forward or shoot being the attacking controls with heading and overhead kicks possible for that moment of World Cup glory.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A treasure hunt title known as Yukawa Otakara Sagashi in Japan that was a promotional disk, but could also be bought. Players at the time were lucky enough to be able to win ten thousand Yen to allow them to order the likes of Border Down or Space Channel 5.
Merchandise
Figure
Very smart tribute to one of the famous son’s of Fire Emblem and Eliwood. Playable in the game, Roy is likely to be a popular choice to begin your epic quest traversing the lands.
XBOX 360
Shoot Em Up
Moss unleash quite a beast in this version of bullet hell that seems to be connected direct to hell with its dark overtones and gothic splendour. Certainly not lacking in imagination as bosses utilise their full 3D capabilities to put the willies up players ships having to share the same screen space that feels positively claustrophobic during such encounters. Splendid character design and a heart beat in sync with Akiba culture chic. A real otakus dream realised in glorious gothic graphics.
Playstation
Sports
Solid enough kick around from football fan developers Tears that includes five a side mode for those off the wall winners.
Playstation
RPG
Enchanting RPG from those skilled craftsmen at Enix that flew in the face of the expected mould of the genre with free flight between villages and dungeons and horizontally viewed exploration like in Princess Crown. All exquisitely executed with panache and distinct graphical style.
Nintendo Hardware
Console
The finest Nintendo console to date with some incredible feats of programming and imagination, so much so that the N64 went out to replicate its wonders. Plenty of import only titles to enjoy as similar to the Saturn, the SFC flourished in its native climate.
Playstation
RPG
Chooses to go with the 16 Bit RPG sprite-based world and looking very dapper for it. The exploration action also seems to also take a leaf out of Zeldas manual (or a feather out of his cap) with enjoyable three quarter perspective romps around the platform levels swishing ones sword.
Sony Hardware
Console
The benefits of buying a Japanese machine are that you can use it straight away without any modification to play import Japanese titles thus enjoying a plethora of hidden gems. This version has a PC card slot in the reverse.
PC Engine Hardware
Console
A classic machine that rivaled the Famicom for popularity in Japan and opens up the world of PC Engine Hu Cards such as ‘Cloud Master’, ‘Jackie Chan’, ‘Gekisha Boy’, ‘Hell’s Journey’…
Virtual Boy
Shoot Em Up
Assume control of the Rangnarok ship in the battle to regain control of a rogue space colony. 2D vertically scrolling blast fest given a 3D element by the ability to shift between different planes. Relatively short, but the usual shields, weapon and pod power ups and detailed backgrounds make this a blast worthy of the Hudson Soft brand.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Delightfully illustrated isometric RPG with exquisite attention to lighting and tasty anime representations of the fantasy, gothic characters. Update of this popular Saturn game was made for the Dreamcast and comes from a rich NEC stable.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Spend time in the life of Ryoko Inoue, and hopefully find love.
Dreamcast
One on One Beat Em Up
Not quite wrestling, not boxing – no holds seem barred either in this encaged grapple fest. Plenty of modes of play and makes good use of the license, even down to the ability to edit your player. Still even without changing your man there are some brutal looking bruisers to choose from.
Playstation
Action
A fine find for those like Genki who missed it first time round with RPG elements to the 3D platforming sections. The combat is all hand to hand by the player as opposed to turn based and works well. Very polished fantasy look.
Playstation
RPG
Remaining firmly rooted in 2D and looking wonderful for it with imaginative gameplay adding the third dimension to proceedings. Aurally maintains the high standards you’d expect from Square. But the real time battles and Zelda overtones make this one for all RPG fans to savour. A true Legend.
