Gamecube
Puzzle
For the uninitiated Mr Driller must suffer the threat of repetitive stress injury and frantically drill from the surface to the goal. Drilled blocks of the same colour collapse presenting a hazard so careful thought is the order of the day. But at the same time limit is set by depleting oxygen reserves. The lovely sprites mask a truly hardcore experience when freebased from its graphical candy, but when its so easy to get into and so sweetly coated it’s a true pleasure to drill deeper. Features a world tour with themed levels from around the globe (and a fine Indiana Jones tribute) and a frantic multiplayer mode where up to players race to the goal. Plenty of extras too and smooth presentation.
Gamecube
Action
Sega uses its cute monkey to promote a devious version of Dizzy with pixel-perfect stops and a fine sense of momentum needed to complete the levels. Fun and never the play engine’s fault.
GameBoy Original
Shooter
Little known shoot em up in which players stand off against alien vessels and fire against each other in a futuristic, intergalactic duel. Travelling across the middle of the screen though is an asteroid belt that can absorb shots, or even deflect them back at your own vessel. Old school and proud of it.
GameBoy Original
Action
Hardware appropriate graphical achievements and gameplay to match as the players penguin pecks platforms to negotiate a safe passage for the egg through the screens laden with traps and adversaries. A real gem in Sega’s crown that shows why it enjoyed the fine times ahead.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Vertical shooting action as players ships zip along up the screen with the secret to fast progress being to nip enemy ships in the bud nice and early before the screen can get too full of bullets and bombs. As an extra strand, players must collect spare parts in order to clear the stage. The chip tunes effects and old school gameplay are the likes of which Genki pines for in the face of bullet hell, bullet storms and bullet waves of the modern STG. Keeping it simple is no criticism.
GameBoy Color
Simulation
Subtitled ‘Flower Corp. New Recruits.’ Crazed mix of steam powered mech strategy battles and delicate as a cherry blossom romance translated well onto the GameBoy Colour.
Animal Crossing Figures
Figure
Snappy safari, leaf pattern shirt, but Mr Nook does look like he could do with a good nights sleep, no doubt having spent too many nights serving late-night customers.
Animal Crossing Figures
Figure
Known in Japan as Mamekuchi, this young chap will gladly serve you plenty of items you don’t really need for your abode. A fine apprentice to Mr Nook. Happy times await in Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing Figures
Figure
The coolest dawg in the town strums up a few bars whilst you relax in the coffee shop sipping the pigeon milk skinny latte. What a gaming legend KK Slider is…
Famicom Cart
Platform
Fine Famicom version which is very playable title in it’s own right. Detachable arm power ups rock!
GameBoy Advance
Sports
Dodgeball is a popular sport in Japan and Bandai have done a sterling job in this GBA version. The players are nicely animated and must catch the ball or take a hit (and also remain temporarily stunned.) Fast-paced and fun.
GameBoy Advance
Simulation
Cherish your little cheeky chappy Hamster with lots of loving and care. Meet friends and sample the variety of mini games to savour with your furry friend, not forgetting to enjoy the odd spin on the wheel or roll in the ball.
GameBoy Advance
Platform
Mega Man suits his role on this handheld platform almost as well as his dashing suit. And it does give him special powers to zip across the screen unleashing a blast at some fine foes from the depths of Capcom’s collective conscience. Plenty of dramatic big boss showdowns, no need for fancy cinematics here. Top drawer entertainment from a fine developer.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Genki can still recall the incredible atmosphere generated by this monster one on one scrapper from SNK. Taking a distinctly Nihon-centric approach to the fight genre, right from the off we are clear this game positively oozes Eastern atmosphere as the lone samurai sits under the cascading sakura blossom. Creating a feel of life and death being on whim of a falling petal, we are soon treated to sea spray from island backdrops to the fires of hell themselves. Absolute treat of a game with atmospheric backgrounds from kabuki theatre, snowy Ainu inspired Hokkaido to Mount Fuji. The giant ‘Earthquake’ character is still jaw dropping even today.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Plays with the second fighting plane, so attacks can be averted by leaping up the screen. Also includes ring outs so you can smash your opponent into a glass lift or even onto a departing train.
Sega Saturn
RPG
A psychological thriller in the mould of ‘D’ with disturbingly realistic rendered graphics and an equally unsettling, in a Silent Hill manner, plot. Subtitle translates as The Reason You Were Born.
PS2
Simulation
Based on the hit manga series that was made into a popular live action drama starring the young conductor and the affections of Megumi Noda or the Nodame of the title. The game involves conducting the orchestra with a few choice clicks making for perfect swishes. The quirkiness of the manga shines through in the adventure sections with the studious Chiaki the attention of more than just Nodames attention.
Playstation
Sports
Glide down the piste and sometimes a bit off the beaten track with plenty of airs and grabs. Plus the all important replay facility is in there to appreciate your fearlessness in the face of sheet ice and protruding rocks.
Playstation
Shooter
Early Playstation mecha shooter with similarities to Metal Head on the 32X and Iron Soldier for those familiar with Ataris big cat. The cross hair surveys the landscape but the tranquillity only lasts briefly before a barrage of missiles hone in. Coming under attack causes glitches to the gamers view to simulate the damage being incurred. It must have been nice for the developer to be allowed a glitch in the actual game.
Mega Drive
Platform
With colourful, cute and cuddly graphics Wonder Boy looks a real treat and plays like one too with light action RPG moments as you collect crucial items, top up at the local store and add to your heart count. Just watch out for grumpy mushrooms, friendly faries and bug eyed rabbits. Also Known as WonderBoy in Monster World.
Merchandise
Merchandise
Beautiful pin badges to proudly show your RPG roots on your lapel featuring the art from the original epic Dragon Quest from parts one to eleven in the series.
