Famicom Cart
Platform
Captures the comedy of the source material as Bakabon clings on to the platform levels that must be negotiated, albeit with the help of a bowl of noodles power up, before tackling the madcap bosses. Full title Heisei Tensai Bakabon.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Cheerful chip tunes and big, bold sprites, plus the character of Kai ensure this is a well treasured Famicom title. Collecting keys and potions, avoiding fire breathing dragons and escape to the door out of the level by the skin of your teeth are the order of the day. Translates as Kai’s adventure. Also known as The Quest of Ki.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Double, bumper CD from the famed Senran Kagura series that has many devotees to its femme fatale fight formula.
Miscellaneous Hardware
Console
Ten titles from Athena, a dozen from master baker Capcom and sixteen from Coconuts Japan make up the bulk of these forty two pieces of gaming history that could give a lesson to some of todays snowflake software. Strider, 1942, Ghouls and Ghosts, Knights of the Round, Captain Commando, Sword Master, Biometal: the list of big hitters is superior to the World Series Baseball team sheet.
Merchandise
Guide Book
Beautifully illustrated guide to the game with the wondrous characters and monsters promoted to the high art they deserve. Also includes skill listings.
PC Engine CD ROM
Simulation
Romp around the town RPG invigorated by colourful characters and some suitably gruff and impossibly falsetto voice acting from ladies in stilettos. The games setting allows plenty of plots shifts which keep things fresh, if a little unexplained. Good use of cut scenes and voices in the early CD format fashion.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Platform
Based on the Japanese TV series of the same name by none other than the genius Hayao Miyazaki. A varied platform romp with beautiful Miyazaki san inspired moments.
Dreamcast
Sports
Realistic approach to casting a few lines with plenty of imaging taken from some of Japans most picturesque waterways. With eighteen lakes, budding fishermen will have plenty of tales to tell by the time the Travel Mode has been completed.
PS2
Action
From the SNK break-away, crack unit that also produced Inuyasha on the PSX comes a 3D extravaganza on the PS2 where despite having sword based battles a degree of artistic license has been granted to bring pyrotechnic explosions to the stand offs. Based on the seminal Kurosawa film ‘The Seven Samurai’ with opening and ending theme songs from the untouchable Ryuichi Sakamoto; gameplay is strictly slice and dice with some light RPG elements as the loveable rogues get a futuristic interpretation.
PS2
RPG
Whilst it definitely dances to its own strategy system, those adventurous grey importers will find plenty to celebrate here with its dramatic story and colourful characters.
PS2
Sports
The Winning Eleven series updates and renovates itself on the PS2 offering the widest array of options for its home console. Graphically breaks previous records on the console absolutely dripping style with players features easily recognised. Yet this is no FIFA – only the well-worked move will result in a rippling onion bag with the quicker play engine being further honed towards a modern masterpiece. The AI is varied and being all-important to the league challenge, makes for a fine knock round in 1P mode. Crossing and heading works a treat as Genki found: getting to the by-line a traditional yet preferred choice of attack. If England fans can bear the reminder from the front cover…
Super Famicom
RPG
Emotional journey and epic quest with some stirring scores and Ascii’s distinctive look to its characters and worlds. The look is befitting of the fine era of SFC RPGs, yet it seems to have a rendered finish to the sprites and backgrounds looking very professional as such. It also seems to help the characters to display the required facial expressions to really draw the budding RPG-er in to its world.
Playstation
Simulation
A nice curio for the Playstation that comes with cable to link players phones to the console to be able to use the home and phone version of the virtual pet Toro’s games.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Pilot the winged ship that can launch a fire phoenix attack and is also equipped with a smart bomb attack, but that loses all your power ups. Varied stages including over the surface of a planet, space ship and through a pyramid. Quite challenging too as the game engine seems to up the difficulty ante depending on how many power ups you have remaining at the end of the stage.
