Very interesting results of Square focusing purely on the action RPG and platform gameplay of this title, without the CG graphics we have come to expect. The results are an incredibly playable title – a real joy to savour with plenty of humour. The bosses are skillfully crafted and the use of the clock to alter playing environments a clever touch.

Painstakingly beautiful gaming world that is full of vibrancy thanks to the 2D graphics. Executed with that distinctive Square class that the developer exudes.

Related to Starblade and Galaxian 3, Star Ixiom has slicker visuals with impressive explosions and more engrossing gameplay with an immersable story. Missions are set cruising in space and between them players can explore the space station from which you jettison out from. Import friendly with a simple interface in English.

Players select options from the text as to their actions in this mysterious anime style adventure that takes place in a South American jungle setting.

One on One Beat Em Up
Set before the original Street Fighter, this features a host of faces to liven up the action: none fresher than Sakura, prouder than Rolento or wiser than old boy Gen. A couple of Final Fight characters even make a guest appearance. Superbly honed to give a balanced bout. Demonstrates the PSX’s fine 2D prowess as it throws beautiful pastel shaded combatants effortlessly around the screen.

Mario Kart tribute with the PlaySation’s hardware getting a good work out spinning the course around on screen. The levels are full of fun with sea and beach based sunshine level looking particularly good in Micro Machines style overhead view. Then there is also the battle mode. The use of fighting like Road Rash as player pass helps it dig its own niche.

Vertically scrolling tribute to the Capcom 194x series but still a refreshing change from the reoccurring outer space theme. Improved aurally and visually over the prequel, with little sign of any slowdown regardless of the relentlessness of the on going aerial assault. A competent conversion of the coin grabbing arcade.

Subtitled ‘The Throbbing Nightmare’ (!), this cos-play inspired dating simulator involves visiting various girlfriends round town. Genki advises keeping out the hostess bar! Multiple endings possible.

Realistic gaming world to charge around gun toting with plenty of break rolls to avoid getting shot before coming up guns blazing like a hero from a John Woo film. The graphical style is reminiscent of the much-loved Dynamite Deka on the Saturn, but the gameplay is definitely shooter based.

Played as a dog piloting a mecha suit in order to round up rogue felines who have been getting a bit aggro, Tail Concerto is a real treat and not just for the canine club. The game tags on some RPG elements but the emphasis of the action is most firmly placed on the 3D platforming sections. Still its always good fun to rummage through someones possessions to try and find a useful item, even if not recommended in real life.

A Bit Special
Players take on the role of caveman and explore the landscape building up their own and the tribes abilities allowing them to swim or boost the fertility rate. The aim is to build a tower of mammoth tusks towards the sun. Highly original from an era when anything seemed possible in gaming terms. Known in Japan as Taiyou no Shippo.

The painstaking attention to detail and the respectful nod to its Super Famicom forefathers in not radically dragging the RPG into the Playstation era ensured the superb series continued on from strength to strength.

Namco maintains its impeccable standards as it fill the disks with sublime graphics complete with reflections and amazing attention to detail. Yet it is the slick and seamless combat and emotional involvement, no doubt boosted by the vast amount of voice acting, which ensures this flies like a bird.

The arrival of Tekken brought home the power of the new 32Bit generation and pushed the Playstations prowess to the forefront of the gaming public’s conscious. Feel every blow reign down from it’s iron fist. With Tekken and ‘Ridge Racer’ Sony owed Namcot a big slap on the back.

Namco really ruled the arcades with its Tekken franchise and deservedly so. The requisite slick and detailed graphics are there, facilitating smooth movements of skilled martial artists. But Namco has also given the combatants the moves in which to drop as well as shatter jaws.

Update of the highly original Super Famicom title, particularly at the time being pre-Burning Rangers, but now given a post-Rangers voice feature. On similar lines to Sega’s epic: fires must be extinguished and people rescued to progress. Each level has a particularly raging fire at the end that must be tamed before clearing the level. Nice pick up and play arcade mechanics.

Fine tribute to the Namco tongue in cheek light gun games with players going up against a fair array of enemies including ghosts in the graveyard and plenty of whacky, Nippon inspired adversaries. Great fun and a real arcadey fresh feel to proceedings.

Twenty nine characters of which two are bosses offers plenty of moves and martial techniques to master as the King of Fighters series grew up in this forward thinking incarnation. Lavishly realised stages including the former Osaka HQ of SNK and more frames of animation for the combatants, but its the speeded up gameplay with greater emphasis on combos’ that makes this hard to beat. Projectile attacks have been shortened so they no longer continue endlessly making for tight close combat.

A real progression point in the series with very fluid controls and some spanking backgrounds such as the Korean concert or the amusement park. Features the power bar that can be charged in Extra mode by pressing the buttons down, or charges itself in Advanced mode by launching attacks on your opponent.

Survival mode is a real challenge with only one energy bar to defeat all comers, but the true fan wouldn’t have it any other way. A truly vast range of 32 characters – and thats just the starting line up. Being able to call up a comrade in times of need certainly helps as they can launch an assault or restore some well needed health. Fine extras for fans including sound clips and gallery showcasing SNK’s superb design flair.

Expands on the Rockman or Megaman series by following the roguish Tron and her army of robots. Charge around towns using mechanical mayhem created by the robots to rob the poor town folk and escape police stings. Captures Capcoms craft and guile in producing fine arcade action titles full of colour and with relentless pacing. Known in Japan as Toron ni Kobun.

Sprightly puzzle game where tiles must be rotated to clear the screen: much easier in practise than words. Adopts various styles to the game view be it the dynastic classical Chinese mahjong tiles, fantasy role playing medieval style or playing cards on the beach setting.

Full of the rough and tumble atmosphere of the Shinto sport as the referee bellows away with wood print style cel shaded graphics. As in the real sport getting a good start is imperative as you gamble on one of the buttons to begin and launch off your haunches. Matches are decide by a knock down or ring out with timing of the button bashing assault being all important.

An array of swimmers from the innocent to the evil looking to take to the pool to try and blow away the opposition with a good, rhythmical stroke.

Enjoy a relaxing game of ping pong at the local school, out of town hot spring or even outer space in this tidy table tennis title with ten characters in the cute ‘Minna no Golf’ graphical style. Fine rallies are possible especially in a well matched two play stand off. Hot springs and table tennis are a winning combination.
