Playstation

Here we have all the games in the Playstation Section.
Playstation
Action
Isometric take tried to drag the PC Engine success of Bomberman into the 32bit world, but the new improved graphics add little to gameplay in Genki’s humble opinion. A must for fans of the series though with highly amusing story mode.
Playstation
RPG
Very interesting results of Square focusing purely on the action RPG and platform gameplay of this title, without the CG graphics we have come to expect. The results are an incredibly playable title – a real joy to savour with plenty of humour. The bosses are skillfully crafted and the use of the clock to alter playing environments a clever touch.
Playstation
Sports
British gamers will get their strawberries and cream in a twist over this Ocean developed tennis title. Solid polygon sprites battle it out for on-court supremacy.
Playstation
RPG
Capcom shows how it can update its Breath of Fire series with the extra processing power of the Playstation, whilst remaining faithful to the pretty glint in the eye of its first love and remaining true to its isometric roots. Lusciously lavish.
Playstation
RPG
The attention to detail is stunning and the pastel shaded look to its isometric graphics works a treat. Aurally pleasing too with beautiful sound effects and emotional music. There are plenty of times the heart strings are strummed like a violin.
Playstation
Simulation
Plenty of Konami polish in this Winning Eleven version of horse racing. Yet players have to put in the hard yards training to get anywhere close to the winners enclosure.
Playstation
RPG
Fantasy strategic RPG based in a kingdom of knights with impressive 3D battles and an immense potential of depth to draw players into its world. The monsters have solid AI and behave in an unpredictable manner. And with five different kingdoms to choose from the replay value is very high. Also known as Brigandine The Legend of Forsena.
Playstation
Sports
A racing game that stirs nostalgic memories amongst gamers of a certain vintage, such was its graphical attainment on the humble Playstation and more arcade style gameplay.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Lauded by many of gaming’s cognoscenti for it’s stance of one hit, one kill. Requires the patience and zen of a true samurai.
Playstation
Rhythm
Sick moves, though those of a younger persuasion may disagree. Players have to be in tune with the tracks to match the rhythm of the button presses required or the needle on the record will start scratching badly.
Playstation
Shoot Em Up
Arcade classics 1942, 1943 and 1943 Kai on the one CD which is great to see as, aside from the 1941 Super Grafx conversion, until this release the home versions had been a tad disappointing. Thankfully Capcom’s back catalogue is well worth cashing in on.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Subtitled ‘The Start of History’, one might expect more familiar titles than Son Son, Higemaru, Exed Exes and Vulgus. Exed Exes is probably the pick of the four, but with Son Son containing NHK Monkey’s exploits it will always be the apple of Genki’s eye.

Thankfully Capcom’s back catalogue is well worth cashing in on. This particular version comes with a splendid art book detailing enemy planes from the games.
Playstation
Simulation
The airplane sim is not a genre with many releases on any console format, so Airline Pilot provides welcome relief for all to enjoy the freedom of flight. Just watch for the turbulance in the thermals…
Playstation
RPG
A mysterious adventure with an off-kilter feel to the game well suited to a title that translates as Super Riddle.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Three games in one, very collectable compilation to celebrate Chocobo’s tenth anniversary: Chocobo Stallion, Chocobo Racing and Dice de Chocobo. Genki can’t resist the charms of Chocobo Racing: even our stony features raise a smile when seeing the legs of the bird like creature whizzing along in this Mario Kart style racer. Shortcuts are great, when remembered that is. Well thought out and varied courses and some superb power ups. Whilst it may lack marks for originality, when the source material is so fine, who is complaining? Chocobo Stallion allows you to train up your chosen Chocobo from cute little fledgling to champion race stallion in this twist on the horse racing game.
Playstation
RPG
Squaresoft utilises its RPG experience as the Chocobo bird takes centre stage. Well, there is a torch light held to it in the dungeons, if not quite centre stage. Delightful rendered levels.

Playstation
Sports
Combines the fun of pull back and go toy cars with the right blend of driving thrills and spills action. The cartoony approach over the realistic version makes it a very enjoyable ride.
Playstation
Sports
Fun racing game due to the sprite graphics keeping action fast paced and the car physics a bit more forgiving. Great locales from the Big Truck arena to the Daytona style open circuit.
Playstation
RPG
Input from the Final Fantasy producer and a near army of playable characters each with their own story setting Chrono Cross in the top flight of RPG games living up to the weighty burden the prequel created. Players can combine attacks together adding a tactical element to the combat and its nice to be able to see a potential battle sequence unfolding so it can be avoided for the battle weary.
Playstation
Simulation
One of the more popular horse racing simulation game series that draws you in to the world of horses.

Further evidence of Japanese skills in making spooky psychological software comes courtesy of Human who were busy terrifying gamers well before Capcom’s zombie onslaughts. Graphic murders involving scissors lead you to think you’re next as you point and click light puzzle elements away towards revealing the murderer’s true identity. Occasional appearances of the scissorman will put a chill down your spine and quick thinking is needed to evade his advances. A panic meter can be used if fully charged to escape temporarily however this can only be used three times before becoming exhausted. In game items can be used as weapons, but once used they can’t be restored to the gaming world so quick thinking is a must.
Playstation
RPG
Action RPG full of kawaii and reminiscent of Kid Dracula on the Super Famicom. Very much dances to its own tune with some off-kilter adversaries including madcap bosses, but never takes itself too seriously and is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the big budget modern day release.
Playstation
Sports
Solid enough kick around from football fan developers Tears that includes five a side mode for those off the wall winners.
Playstation
Sports
Glide down the piste and sometimes a bit off the beaten track with plenty of airs and grabs. Plus the all important replay facility is in there to appreciate your fearlessness in the face of sheet ice and protruding rocks.
Playstation
Action
Based on the epic Galaxy Express 999 anime, a 3D fast paced adventure with plenty of firepower. Absolutely must for fans of the series, but with enough on-screen action to sell itself to those yet to discover Galaxy Express’s delights.
Playstation
Simulation
A cracking title in which you get to become a master crane operator through the various stages and challenges including pulling out fish as in the child’s toy fishing game. There is also an expert course to graduate aswell as the grind of work mode where going about your duties is strangely gratifying. Only in Japan, but well worth a spin. Known as Crane Master ni Narou in Japan. See also Shovel Master and Machine master in the Kenki Ippai series.
