Nintendo 64
Sports
Plenty of twists, turns, snow drifts, flips and fun in this fine take on snowboarding that captures some of its carefree attitude to careering down the slopes at break neck speeds. Nice take on the genre and looking nice on the Nintendo roku jyu yon.
Playstation
Action
Fondly recalled and with mightily impressive draw distances and reflections as the plane must be guided through caverns and aquariums to get to the goal. A Venetian style level is contrasted against the neon city scape too.
Playstation
Simulation
Turn based strategy combat making use of the hardware’s 3D capabilities as the space ships are spun and flipped around in the search for weaknesses, like a hardware demo itself.
PS2
RPG
Western style ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ fantasy RPG whose dark caverns never saw light of day in the Occident.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A Japan exclusive that was only on sale between the 16th and 24th of December 1999 and could only be used between that period to send a message to a love one at Christmas.
Dreamcast
RPG
One of the early releases on the Dreamcast and the developers were still finding their feet. Still, all the elements of a Sega RPG are included for the fans. A steady and solid enough title.
Sega Hardware
Controller
Improve your dance step using this DDR mat compatible with the Dreamcast titles. Far better to practise in the comfort of your own home before unleashing your moves on the arcade groupies. Genki keeps the curtains firmly shut when grooving and gyrating, for now…
Dreamcast
RPG
A sample of the main game that includes about ten hours gameplay and could be upgraded to the full game on payment of the fee. Sadly the online Dreamcast servers flicker no more, but this remains a fine collectable and sample of the delightful Arcadia arena. Known as Skies of Arcadia in the West.
PS2
Sports
Stunning 60 frames per second graphics on par with the coin op release, tight controls and, as the name would suggest, a real challenge to get to grips with demanding more and more from the driver to really push you to the limits. Sega has worked hard on the physics, handling, collisions and this realistic title pushes Gran Turismo right up against the guard rail with Yu Suzuki’s expertise shining through like lens flare. Realistic too in the sense that braking is a must to progress, making for some slight initial teething but that is soon soothed away as you power slide to perfection.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Genki still enjoys the confined feel of Viper’s arenas and the delight found in smashing your opponents armour off. Japanese version contains Pepsi Man as one of the many hidden characters.
Dreamcast
Sports
The progress of Humans prodigal son involves subtle gameplay tweaks, new characters and updated moves. Whilst the graphics are very tidy and well animated, the developers have eschewed polygon models for spritely well animated wrestlers adding bucket loads of playability to the process so wrestlers can almost feel the perspiration. And kudos is due for promoting gameplay over graphics.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Dating game that originally came to fame on the PC FX. This squel also includes a two disk conversion of the original First Kiss Story alongside the two disks of the update. Also known as First Kiss Monogatari. Plenty of fine ladies to take the players fancy, even for those with a penchant for pointy ears.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Sega Saturn related digital magazine with RPG Club, Barbara’s Game Experience Corner, Digital Gallery and Girls Collection featuring Sakura Wars and Virtua Fighter 3. Collectable kitsch.
PS2
RPG
Its easy to see why there is a deep affinity for Growlanser as it sticks to the sprite based world and the detail is stunning. Players soon for a team to negotiate its isometric world and the sprite graphics add to the bond that forms.
PS2
RPG
An RPG in the classic mould with beautiful sprites making for a believable gaming world. A well loved series and with such golden plot threads expertly woven into a tapestry worthy of the fine halls which feature within, RPG gurus will lap this up
Nintendo 64
Puzzle
The solid puzzle planning of Tetris meets the lush presentation of Disney in Capcom’s expert hand. A very fine version to savour.
Playstation
Action
Whizz through the isometric levels freeing captured cuties and get to the exit in the time honoured tradition given a 3D spin.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Rare does Mickey and the Mario Kart style race action makes good use of the license as the racers all have chit-chat in the style of their character. The locales are fun too: beachside, through the mansion, besides the obligatory ice level to skid around and Grand Canyon.
PS2
A Bit Special
Namco certainly has a back catalogue worthy of raiding as this compilation remonstrates: Mr. Driller, Kaze no Klonoa, Tekken, Ridge Racer and Ace Combat 2. As you’d expect souped up visuals and slick presentation with movie clips and artwork from the games. Play the games as the makers intended.
PSP
RPG
Create your own dungeon and be bold enough to build it deeper and more impenetrable. The hero of the game must garner treasure to be resurrected and luckily has the skills to pay the bills. Plenty of Sega spit and polish on offer.
Sony Hardware
Controller
The Para Para dance craze swept Japan like the cherry blossom front with deeply tanned girls and bleached blond boys tossing about there limbs in the clubs from Shibuya to Sekijo. This controller allows players to follow the onscreen prompts by passing over the sensors at the right time. Good exercise and very useful for night clubbing (in a slightly retro fashion.)
Gamecube
Simulation
This online simulation card battle game features over 400 types of cards, including enemies and items from the PSO series.
Sony Hardware
Accessory
These caps fit over the direction controller of the PS2 controller to give the pad greater versatility.
Sony Hardware
Controller
Improve your dance step using this DDR mat compatible with the Playstation titles. Far better to practise in the comfort of your own home before unleashing your moves on the arcade groupies. Genki keeps the curtains firmly shut when grooving and gyrating, for now…
XBOX 360
Sports
Quite a stunning visual feast as bumps in the road, the distant cityscape, rival cars and the course itself all glide along like the smoothest of road surfaces. The beats to the soundtrack are relentless and encourage the pedal to the metal. Well worthy of the series name and as pretty as one of its race girls.
Playstation
Platform
The third release in the Jumping Flash series has some tight controls as you bunny hop from sky scraping platforms in full 3D. Uber cute and cuddly kawaii adversaries give this an adorable Japanese feel. Mission based to add diversity to the challenges.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Strictly adhering to the if it ain’t broke adage, SNK delivers more stomach ripping action in this slightly tweaked sequel with four new characters. Superb.
Mega Drive
Simulation
Known in the West as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there is often little romance to be found on the battlefield as your troops fight bravely and bitterly to pursue your ultimate goal of unifying the middle kingdom under your control. Training is important to be able to defeat opposing foes as Koei shows where it made its hard earned money.
Dreamcast
Sports
Sega Rally really captured the reason why fans spend their Sunday mornings avoiding careering vehicles in off-the-beaten-track forests: power sliding round hairpin bends with wheels spinning to kick out on the home straight. Sublime.
Sega Saturn
Sports
A tasty piece of programming making the PlayStation eat humble pie. Crisp graphics running a a high frame rate truly brought the arcade experience home. But gameplay is what counts – the developer’s extensive rally car physics research oozes from every powerslide.
