Not a rare game, yet being regarded as a National Treasure in Japan ensures it holds its value up high. So beloved coming with the four Famicom outings of our plump plumber. (The forth outing was known as Super Mario Brothers USA in Japan.) The presentation is impeccable and the bonus Battle Game from Mario 3 is the icing on a substantial, yet very more-ish cake.

Platform
Chirpy, cheery chip tunes and a suitably sized up Mario sprite make for a fine outing for Nintendo’s loveable mascot on the GameBoy. Using wings to gain extra distance on jumps, underwater sections, pipes – its all here and the wee man is in fine fettle.

Simulation
This instalment of the legendary robot series led to a full animated version, such was its popularity in Japan. The battles remain immense and fully intense with anime style productions skills to hike up the tension and emotion. An epic battle sim and manna from heaven for Taisen devotees.

Shoot Em Up
Fine sequel that pushes the boundaries with isometric backgrounds and good variation in the setting with skyscrapers brushing the players vessel, carvings from Aztec era South America, dense jungles and blue lagoons. Players disembark to explore the levels properly and the on foot action is well complimented by the bash and blast shooting.

One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of foxy female protagonists going tete a tete in the Pretty Fighter 2D mould each trying to be the champ (with a side bet on the highest hemline.) Popular enough to be found on the PC Engine and Saturn as well with PSX updates.

Great take on the Korean martial art that faithfully recreates the speed of the sport at almost Olympic level velocity and as many axe kicks as the hamstrings would permit. The quick thinking makes for a real feel of getting a grip on the sport as does the ability to be able to manoeuvre round the ring.
Gamecube
RPG
An epic series with a monumental version on the GameCube, so well suited with its cel-shaded sprites blurring the boundaries between anime and gaming, that it got its own limited edition console release. A real crest of the wave in terms of the series.
NEO GEO CD
One on One Beat Em Up
The superlatively detailed backgrounds and imaginative combatant design that characterises any quality SNK release are present, as is the power up bar from the 97 version which allows for super moves when full which is preferred by many to the striker system introduced in the sequels from here on in. Just like the real world of martial arts, its takes dedication and hard work to progress with this old school black belt. Today’s crop of beat em ups would take a pasting off this bruiser.

Delightful, adorable platformer but don’t let the sweet Disney characters deceive the challenge at the heart of this example of how licensed games should be done. Konami delivers yet again.

Ultraman is pretty much the ultimate man, apart from being a robot. But he certainly is nails, albeit backed up with a possible platinum casing to his nuts. But don’t tell him Genki said that judging by the roster of kaijyu dispatched in this retro fight fest.

Shoot Em Up
Conversion and handing over the torch from the Dreamcast to keep the world of shooters illuminated. Jaw dropping, smoothly animated visuals and attention to detail in smoke plumages and tumbling shrapnel, not forgetting the immense explosions. Arming your copter with a second weapon option as well as targeting adds a tactical aspect to the military themed, vertically scrolling shmup action.

Rhythm
Sony goes out on a vector line yet pulls it off again in this outstanding fresh, musical title. Guide your rabbit along by keeping in tune with the rhythm, but lose the beat and it’ll soon mutate into a frog or worm. Compatible with your own music CD’s too.
