Nintendo 64
Sports
Takes the Super Famicom prequel to new heights which was no mean feat considering the strength of the original. Expect to be leaning into each turn as the frame rate zips along with pizzazz even with vast numbers of on screen racers in this sci fi racer. The comic style presentation also makes a refreshing change all backed by an appropriate rock soundtrack. Well worthy of the Nintendo brand.
Dreamcast
Sports
Stunning 60 frames per second graphics on par with the coin op release, tight controls and, as the name would suggest, a real challenge to get to grips with demanding more and more from the driver to really push you to the limits. Sega has worked hard on the physics, handling, collisions and this realistic title pushes Gran Turismo right up against the guard rail with Yu Suzukifs expertise shining through like lens flare. Realistic too in the sense that braking is a must to progress, making for some slight initial teething but that is soon soothed away as you power slide to perfection.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
Well-loved series on the platform and fine use of the new format, as it was at the time, with animated cut-scenes and plenty of speech to meet the fine band of folk that inhabit its old school, RPG village and locales.
Super Famicom
RPG
There are collectors who strive to collect every game Squaresoft has released and with such packaging it is easy to understand why that is. More than worthy of an English language translation with some emotion stirring moments in, some Chocobo must have had his head in the sand in Squares Overseas Department. There are some who feel the FF series lost its innocence in the shift from sprite based to the 32 Bit era.
Super Famicom
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Take to the streets, subway and boxing arena to wrestle back control and get Jessica back. Just watch out for those flying flick knives and high kicking ladies of the night. Or are they?
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Features six of the most popular voice actresses in Japan to bolster the blocky early Virtua Fighter polygon graphics. Follow up to the saucy Pretty Fighter X.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Concise Capcom programming at its pinnacle. Brilliant gameplay, unforgiving yet always fair. Whilst the green grass of the first level is very familiar to Genki, the rest is a bit of a blur. Title translates as big devil world village.
Super Famicom
Platform
Fun packed sequel as bad boy Ackman scraps his way through the platform levels, including a level spent driving across the platforms in a car. Does contain some Japanese language story, but not really essential to gameplay.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Fine Famicom family fun as players ruin a good walk by following the ball around the course. Nice animations of the player and the split screen map works well to set the standard for many golf games to follow.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Cracking retro blast as players bound around on screen with a bold palette, funky tunes and full on action gameplay. Bombs are dropped to reveal items to help progress whilst avoiding the mice and the hot pursuit of the gun wielding authorities. A superb license that shouldn’t be missed.
Sega Saturn
Action
Wipeout style racer with wings as it really whizzes along. Decent draw distance, not that racers get much chance to admire too far onto the horizon. Segas presentation and arcade expertise make this one to admire and enjoy from this era.
PS2
Sports
Genki can’t help but feel great sympathy for rival developers who witnessed this instalment of Gran Turismo and promptly hit the nearest bar. Raising the bar to epoch setting heights giving attention to textures, handling, lighting, sound effects. Hats off to Sony (especially as you almost expect to feel the wind as cars whiz past.)
PS2
RPG
Spectacular combat with visual pyrotechnics to set this apart from the competition. The development of the series from the Saturn and Dreamcast is a joy to watch and the progression with each instalment is quite staggering.
Playstation
Shooter
Light gun compatible gun game that comes with a two player mode to recreate the trigger pumping action of the arcade coin-op. This will keep those with a twitchy finger occupied with four areas to each of the atmospheric six stages based on ancient Greek and Egyptian mythology. Known in the West as Crypt Killers.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Sports
Enjoy the fierce rivalry of rather over competitive football between Japanese high school teams. Similar to the Neo Geo classic Soccer Brawl in terms of the violent challenges possible.
Switch
Action
Classic Famicom material of gameplay over graphics, now given the graphics to match the gameplay thanks to this Switch conversion. Collect the money whilst avoiding ninjas made far more appealing by Sunsoft’s imagination: daikon and lantern power ups as well as the appearance of a rather rough looking geisha of questionable gender.
PS2
Action
Drawing on the warring period of Japans history, Ikusagami sees players sweeping away the army of ten thousand when ploughing through the battlefield crammed with opponents. Some serious specials are needed and the PS2 handles them admirably as huge armies get swiped away in a circle of the huge sword. And with over 60,000 enemies on screen at one time, that is quite some sizeable sword… Known as Demon Chaos in the West.
Super Famicom
Sports
Choose from the cream of the Japanese top division teams complete with mascots. Graphically slick, the view is from the grandstand with the game switching to manga style challenge screens every now and then where you must decide what to do, a bit like an RPG battle scene.
Super Famicom
Sports
Nice arcade flow to the play with nice crowd effects and over the top celebrations to goals, including replays which were quite unheard of at the time.
GameBoy Original
Sports
Smooth passing system and generous playing area in relation to player size allowing for plenty or room to pass and move. Work the ball. Hit the space. Eat up the ground. Funny old game.
Playstation
Platform
Sony gets psychedelic as the ginormous rabbit lunches from platform to platform in this Hawaiian themed take on one of the first forays into 3D platforming. Addresses some of the issues with the prequel and works very well to the point where players often brace their knees to jump together.
Gamecube
Simulation
The game that allows players to create their own customised Kaiju monster with the initial appearance based on a few choice questions players get asked. The monsters can gain experience, but the overall aim is to keep the peace on the island and protect it from attacks from Godzilla wannabes. Title translates as Monster Island. Subtitled Amazing Island. Features a GBA link up for an added dimension to play.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
Battle Garegga, Feveron, Kingdom Granprix plus Ketsui with the M2 gadget feature gives even the most grizzled shoot em up veterans plenty to get their teeth into, providing they remove the grenade pin in there already. The PS4 seems to have taken on the Xbox 360s mantle of master of shooters.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Shoot Em Up
Sci-fi retro feel about this horizontally scrolling shoot em up emphasised by the cheesy opening animation song. Kaidan is a robot tasked with saving the Earth and piloted by the creator’s son Takeshi, whose girlfriend is always offering support over the intercom. Massive levels and ginormous bosses reminiscent of Transformers in their prime. Definitely worthy of closer attention from shooter aficionados.
Playstation
A Bit Special
A fine collectable curio for Playstation devotees coming with this Winnie the Pooh themed mouse to help those progress through the educational levels of the game.
Playstation
Shooter
Every early adopter of a new, exciting system ends up playing their limited releases to death and Kileak was no exception in Genkis experience. Dank, dim tunnelled areas are explored in a mecha suit solving basic puzzles and firing off volleys of projectiles to any unwanted company.
Playstation
Action
Deluxe Pack including accurate conversions of the classic light gun titles Lethal Enforcers and Lethal Enforcers II done justice to by the PSXs power. Perfectly playable even with just a joypad as the city and Western settings add much to the tension. The showdown in China Town is particularly memorable. Includes a few interesting options to play around with on the conversion including being able to switch the blood on or off.
Playstation
Sports
Graphically simplistic tennis game neatly drop shoting the polygon heavy approach for a more playable full screen affair. Rally potential aplenty with plenty of venues and characters to choose from. Four player matches can bring up language reminiscent of a Connors McEnroe match up.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Search the spooky mansion for the evil spirit. With plenty of ghouls to meet along the way. Gameplay involves drifting around the spooky mansion with its high ceilings trying to discover the grim secret behind the death of the Mansion’s owner. Yet as in most Japanese spooky stories there is a twist in the tale. Also known as Shinsetsu Yume Miyakata.
Virtual Boy
Sports
Very ambitious attempt to realise tennis in a 3D Mario inspired world with Yoshi, Koopa and Donkey Kong Jr all in there making this a must for any Nintendo collector.
