Tate, meaning vertical, scrolling shoot em up from Capcom’s classic stable of WWII plane blasters. Good, solid arcade mechanics and plenty to keep the guns ratatating in both smaller planes and the big, bad boss versions.

Plenty of tributes to its mighty back catalogue in game for the discerning gamer. Taking out tanks that appear in the maze means keeping a keen eye out for where they will appear, if in control of the skirmish. Otherwise it means grabbing those freeze power ups or blasting a whole in the maze to sit in, perhaps even behind camouflage.

The Battletoad games are very collectable and its easy to see why in this Rare crafted version. Cliched some of the locations may be, but when the execution is of such high standard its easy to see why they become much imitated and rarely bettered. Fun, wholesome action that squeezes every iota out of the hardware.

Violent realisation of the manga world with good pacing and nice presentation. One almighty sword makes this the mother of all hack and slash titles complete with soundtrack fit for slaying.

One on One Beat Em Up
Until released it never was truly believed that such an otaku’s dream of Ryu vs Terry Bogart battles would actually become a reality. Two of the giants of the 2D one on one combat world locking horns has never been such fun.

Platform
Brings back the gaming fun with a unique twist on the platform genre in that it is played by a car. Drivers must cover as many of the platform levels as possible and in doing so complete the road they drive over. Some mightily impressive sprite rotation techniques as the players car changes direction or it fires a bullet into the pursuing police cars to spin them out of control. Nice backgrounds too with the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben guesting.

Run and gun action as players charge into the screen avoiding the pillar boxes, motorbikes and hand grenades as everything including the kitchen sink gets thrown at you to prevent your advance. Its hard not to warm to such gameplay with simple objectives and nothing to blame but your own lack of skill (and possibly army training) for not progressing and meeting the mission goal.

Sega does Bond with some fine tongue in cheek humour as you choose from two sleek spies to take out the bad guys in a flurry of trigger finger action in classic light gun style. Has a few moments to interrupt the trigger happy action though, such as a chance to shoot a key or bunging up a toxic gas leak which keep you on your toes and alter the games course. Not too many gun games on the DC making this one to really savour especially in two player mode.

Rhythm
Intriguing twist on the rhythm action style of game with J Pop music that adjusts to your skill level. Protaganists Amp and Spica must dance their way through the colourful Cool Cool Town using their dancing skills to appease yellow werewolves and diffuse bombs. Gameplay is similar to Space Channel 5 and Neo Geo Pocket link up is possible in this last import only SNK release for the Dreamcast. This link up lets you unlock instruments in the Pocket version which can then be used in the Dreamcast version

RPG elements in the way the mystic, spiritual world is explored inter-spliced with side scrolling boss levels where the demon must be levelled by the sword. Known in Japan as Ankoku Shinwa.

Full of Sega’s arcade prowess making it to the DC via the Model 2 arcade board with a few cosmetic enhancements. Multiple routes are possible but this is just like its Hollywood counterpart Die Hard in that action comes above all else.

A very tidy SD Card for the Egret II Mini Arcade that boosts the roster of games by another ten with real, retro appeal. Shmup fans will lap up Daisenpu, Gekirindan and Slap Fight. Purilula is a must for those who appreciate a vintage video game. Backed up by Cleopatra Fortune, Dungeon Magic (looking intriguing in its isometric fight form), Riding Fight (experimental coin op), Grid Seeker, Great Swordsman and Gladiator. Re-release of the original print, but without the Taito Station magazine.

Having witnessed the success of the Astro City Mini, Taito comes to the party with this scaled down replica of its 1996 Egret II boasting SD Card slot for extra games and five inch screen, besides HDMI output. The save facility certainly helps and the real arcade cognoscenti can tweak the game settings as well as rotate the push out screen to TATE mode. An immense roster including Kikikaikai, Metal Black, The Legend of Kage, Gun Frontier, Ninja Kids, Tatsujin: the roster of forty inclusive titles is rich and varied. This is the violet version and looks very snazzy in it.

Coin-op crackers dominate this Arcade Collection and its great to see the Egret getting the reciprocation it deserves from the gaming cognoscenti. Technos Japan and Data East finest are on board: Double Dragon, Kunio Kun, Mysterious Stones, Bogey Manor, Xain’d Sleen’a, Chelnov, Dark Seal, Edward Randy, Boogie Wings and Wolf Fang 2001. Some strange sounding titles, but they play like a retro dream.

Combines the first two adventures on the series on one rather large cart. Also includes a fold out map with the layout of the two worlds along with a paperback guide book/instruction manual in full colour with plenty of screenshots and illustrations. Highly collectable.

A fine blast in the Fantasy Zone style as players pilot their vessel (looking very much like an Opa Opa) in the horizontally scrolling shooting levels. Unusually the ship has stats like in a good RPG and the levels can be boosted by handing over some hard earned currency to the friendly shopkeeper who seems more than willing to assist.

A fine collectable and curio for the Famicom combining board game and video game in one very fine package. The attention to detail in the production is staggering as up to four players traverse the game world and board map simultaneously.

Whittle away a few peaceful hours on Lake Paradise trying to land a big bass renowned for their fighting ability. Tactical choice of lure is essential as you cajoule the bass to take the bait. Once you have a bite the line tension guage must be carefully monitored to stop the line from snapping. Arcade and DC original modes to select with the latter being far more forgiving than the arcade mode in which you must land sufficient weight within the time limit to you move on to the next stage. Failure to bag anything will leave you gutted.

Charge into the screen Space Harrier style, but this is a platform style escapade and the player must avoid gates and space critters on the planets surface. The 3D effect is impressive and quick reflexes are needed to keep up with the rapid pacing. The Sequel to Tobidase Daisakusen.

Genki would love to diverge more details if only the plot of Hirohiko Araki’s suitably named manga made sense… Recommended to fans with Capcom’s solid fighting engine and JoJo’s insane animation skilfully blended together. The special moves are the cocoa dust on top to fans of the series.

A classic case of a brilliant game released late into a hardwares life scale and as such some what slipping under the radar. A one on one fighter with some quirky differences that makes it a bit of a genre bender and all the more enjoyable for it. Cheerful chip tunes and big, bold sprites, plus the character of Kai ensure this is a well treasured Famicom title. Collecting keys and potions, avoiding fire breathing dragons and escape to the door out of the level by the skin of your teeth are the order of the day. Translates as Kai’s adventure. Also known as The Quest of Ki.

A Jidaigeki is a historical drama as Kunio takes a trip back in time to enjoy some of Japan’s rich feudal history with samurai and chonmage hairstyles. Our Kunio fits the bill just fine though: equally at home fighting bad dudes down the game centre as unhinged bullies trying to capture his girl.

One on One Beat Em Up
Welcomed sequel to the atmospheric samurai slasher set during the Meiji restoration in Japan’s modernisation. Includes new fatality moves subtly executed with the series distinct style. And with it being samurai based there are lethal weapons to utilise. Adds deflect moves to the equation: rather than blocking outright, players can deflect an attack leaving their opponent wide open to a counter. Fine attention to detail in the backgrounds with even the puddles making splashes as the fighters square up to each other. The lavishly illustrated manual looks like it was drawn by Hokusai and similar high art can be found in the games gallery.

Any game with a guest appearance of Genki hero Xandra of Super Famicom Xandra’s Big Adventure fame is worthy of any collection in Genki’s humble opinion. RPG elements in this action title not very well known outside Japan. Catapulting around levels is great fun and saves having to revisit areas of this huge game.
