Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Eight tracks that delve deeper into space than any Virgin manned flight. Fitting tribute to a fine series, yet the best compliment we can pay is that it stands up perfectly well as a music CD alone. Twin lasers all round.

Shoot Em Up
To truly celebrate the 40th anniversary of Gradius (or Nemisis) comes this mighty compendium tribute to the master blaster with Gradius, Gradius II, Gradius II, Life Force, Salamander, Salamander II and Salamander III. A true labour of love for the series fans with the different regional versions plus plenty of modes included such as training, easy mode and a tour of the graphics that make up the series.
PS2
Shoot Em Up
In a gesture to Treasure’s fine line of high art shmups, Konami handed them free reign for their ageing but massive Gradius franchise; yet the purists need not have worried: Treasure stayed true to the spirit of the series with its adjustable power ups whilst subtly imprinting its own hand on proceedings with its trademark mega bossses, and eye popping, retina ruining illumimnations. A shmup masterclass.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
A rare title in that it captures the atmosphere of the Japanese high school classroom. Similar to the Spectrum classic “School Daze” in the sense that being naughty is much more fun than studying, yet likely to end in failure to graduate.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A version of the popular school life/dating sim. Features classical anime artwork to make any otaku worth their Shonen Jump go week at the knees.

PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Update of the school life simulation. Too much fun and too little study causes headaches for both you and your teachers, so striking a balance is essential. Similar to the Spectrum classic “School Daze”.
Sega Saturn
Action
Wipeout style racer with wings as it really whizzes along. Decent draw distance, not that racers get much chance to admire too far onto the horizon. Segas presentation and arcade expertise make this one to admire and enjoy from this era.
Playstation
Sports
Sleek, sensuous, slimline, smooth, stylish…. And that’s just the Japanese box design! The game that sent hundreds of developers back to the drawing board to think again.
PS2
Sports
Without wishing to sound like a car advert (and this game often looks like a car commercial), the smooth ride is assisted by the glide of the handling and the slick update of backgrounds with a high frame rate. Never before had such lighting effects been seen and the half light between light and day demonstrates this remarkably.

Sports
With five courses, around fifty models of sleek cars and up to 16 cars in online races, rev heads will be in a spin of the sheer gloss of GT5 finish. Even for a series renowned for its good looks, GT5 looks like attaining a new plateau of race game enjoyment with all the beauty of a race girl and the gritty realism of a pit lane skid out. Sony shows its gunning for pole position.

With an additional course, around twenty new models of cars and up to 16 cars in online races, rev heads will be in a spin of the sheer gloss of GT5 Spec III finish. Even for a series renowned for its good looks, GT5 looks like attaining a new plateau of race game enjoyment with all the beauty of a race girl and the gritty realism of a pit lane skid out. Sony shows its gunning for pole position taking full advantage of modern technology in both the visual and audio lanes. Its no revolution, just real progress.

Genki can’t help but feel great sympathy for rival developers who witnessed this instalment of Gran Turismo and promptly hit the nearest bar. Raising the bar to epoch setting heights giving attention to textures, handling, lighting, sound effects. Hats off to Sony (especially as you almost expect to feel the wind as cars whiz past.)
PS4
Sports
An incredible tribute to the art of racing, the feel of smooth tarmac roads and the pure speed shining through in such a fine tribute to the sport with Polyphony pouring life and soul into its passion.
PS2
Action
Teaching gamers some street phrases of language comes the Japanese version of GTA with Liberty City as inviting as ever. Literally lose yourself in the myriad of missions and potential threads through the city where if you think it, most times it can be pulled off. Cruising with the radio on full blast remains a real treat and players soon develop a penchant for particular vehicles. Full of the city grime in parts, you can’t help but admire its boldness.
PS2
Action
A release on the Japanese PS2 of the bad boy street life sim fresh from the PSP. The underground activities are starting to shake the very foundations of Liberty City such are their seismic proportions. Getting involved in a few more tremors shouldn’t hurt anyone.

Spectacular combat with visual pyrotechnics to set this apart from the competition. The development of the series from the Saturn and Dreamcast is a joy to watch and the progression with each instalment is quite staggering.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Very bold title that sets you up trying to become the next pop idol by creating a music video. There are some loopy loops such as ‘Cheap Bicycle’ and ‘Da! Da! Da!’ but its the madcap Tim Burton created in game persona’s that really take the biscuit.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Realistic graphics and a gritty, urban rap theme track in English juxtaposed against the Japanese commentary. Solid game of baseball from the experts at Sega Sports.
PS2
Sports
Arcade orientated football blast from pass masters Taito. Perfectly playable even without having to bellow commands at your star striker. The Portugal of the footballing world.

Sega Saturn
Action
A charge through the 3D levels to grab the flags utilising spare blocks to get across the solid platforms. Plenty of power ups to spice up the action and a fine level of 3D for a console that is meant to struggle with it.
PSP
Simulation
Romance quest game for ladies with a plethora of gentlemen of effeminate, sensitive looks with long, straightened hair to converse with about starry skies and blue oceans.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Denki Groove is a funky techno chap lending his tunes to this deviously devilish mini game compilation. Players must complete tasks in the game which is like the more familiar Made in Wario and its ilk mini game series. However the games have a darker edge more in line with cult cracker Baito Hell on the PSP. A young lad must chop wood by a simple button press, but the old man helper will sneak on a pink bunny rabbit from time to time. Players must hurtle off in a race of chicken: the winner being the one who can stop closest to the cliff edge without flying off it. A Wolfenstein style avatar has plenty of sneaky glances left to right as he counts the folk strolling along the street. A real underground favourite in Japan and after a few minutes its easy to see why.
PS2
RPG
An RPG in the classic mould with beautiful sprites making for a believable gaming world. A well loved series and with such golden plot threads expertly woven into a tapestry worthy of the fine halls which feature within, RPG gurus will lap this up.
