A triple A Nintendo game that oozes class from every conveyor belt Mario must traverse or rope he must swing on in order to get the key and free the stolen Mario toy. Being a Kong title the big showdown always hangs over the player. But the level design and multiple solutions show the vast amount of work that have gone into this superbly rendered action puzzler.

Bashing big chunks out of metal out of robots is great fun as it is, but even more enjoyable when you have designed and built the mech yourself. Or even more distressing depending on how the bout is going. The bouts are one on one in a Virtual On style arenas but players see more of their pride and joy to show off their design.

A romantic dating game based on the popular manga and anime with venues including a concert and even where you work doing your part time job. Choosing the right words to say are the key to winning hearts, but the course of true love never runs smoothly.

Shoot Em Up
Developed by Takumi who produced Gigawing, Mars Matrix encourages you to build up piles of cash to upgrade to new weapons. Collecting in succession has a multiplier effect encouraging paint scorching near-misses. Only grizzled shmup veterans need apply, but the shield option does provide some respite – especially when it fires back enemy projectiles or even doubles as a smart bomb; not without a price of course. And its due to this recharge period that the shield must be tactically used. Lovely Battle Garegga proportion attention to detail with molten shrapnel wizzing past.

Sony’s answer to Samba De Amigo with high tempo soundtrack (including of course Tubthumping) but instead of using maracas, players attach sensors to their wrists and ankles. The player then follows the martial moves of their on screen persona gaining points for successfully landing a kick or punch at the correct time. There is also a visual reward for landing the moves on time such as being able to see a fireball travel across the screen. Done with intent the techniques give a good work out and the graphics are nicely done set in stereotypical Chinese situations. Includes a two player mode where on screen adversaries swarm in for the kill and they are dispatched with a deft flick of the wrist.

One on One Beat Em Up
In 2D combat the Saturn could take on and beat all comers. Spidey with his sticky webs and web swinging specials versus the giant Hulk (taking up a third of the screen) is every Marvel fans fantasy. Blackheart towers over adversaries adding to the dark, heinous feel in contrast to the positive Captain America who can lose his shield in combat if not careful. The fluid animation on the squid like tentacles of alien Shuma Gorath is a delight, shame it can’t do much to stop Dr Doom making full use of the play arena’s height. Compatible with the RAM cartridge to give smoother animations, yet non-essential.

One on One Beat Em Up
Two rich licenses collide in a veritable pastiche of martial madness with Capcom pulling the strings. Animation is incredibly fluid – even with four characters slugging it out and play mechanics are balanced to a micro gram. A sizeable roster of colourful characters to master. Possibly the pinnacle of 2D fighting gaming on the Playstation.

One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of characters to choose from the rich source material of the Marvel Comics and Capcom back closets. The sequel was no slouch, yet Capcom improves and finely hones with its expert hand. But despite the presence of Jill from Biohazard and Sakura from Street Fighter, Genki remains resolutely a Spidey fan. A very rare find on the PS2 as one of the platforms (possibly any platforms) finest 2D titles. Comes with added gallery. Subtitled New Age of Heroes.

A veritable dojo of martial artists and super heroes with the full roster being made of: X-Men, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, Marvel vs Capcom, Marvel vs Capcom 2 and The Punisher. Only The Punisher hasn’t featured on Genki in previous format releases being a coin-op, but the Final Fight format will feel very much at home to Capcom connoisseurs and cognoscenti.

Each has their own merit such as being nippy and able to squeeze through gaps, or being strong and able to lift large boulders or tall and able to reach high spots. Unfortunately a band of rogue pirates are also in pursuit of the treasure too. Brilliantly carried out with that Nintendo child like charming view of the world. Before long you’ll be drawn in and think nothing of chatting to chimps in underground caves…
