PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Pachio kun is a little ball with legs, a Pachinko ball to be precise, who here travels into outer space for the theme to this Pachinko controller compatible table game. Pachinko involves a pile of steel balls falling from the top of screen and players trying to manipulate them to fall out to the players collection. Here without the deafening sound.
PS2
Simulation
Sammy has fine lineage in the pachinko stable and excels here once again in recreating the parlour at home with colourful eye candy graphics and toe tapping tunes.
PS2
Simulation
A good license to add much to the pachinko genre as steel balls tumble to many aggressive sounding threats and grim looking outcomes from the Mad Max of the anime world. This is the updated Special Edition with even more shouts of ‘Kiai.’
Dreamcast
Simulation
Fruit machine simulator that took advantage of the DC networks whilst available to give slot machine fans a cheaper alternative to feeding their habit. Tidy Jungle Master theme to the machine in line with the fruity feel.

Super Famicom
Puzzle
Panel de Pon is also known as Puzzle League. Lines must be matched up but blocks can only be shifted horizontally to clear the on screen action. Liften head and shoulders above the competition by Nintendo’s exceptional presentation.
Virtual Boy

Sega Saturn
Simulation
Panic Chan and Trouble Chan star in this OVA anime adventure packed full with plenty of doe eyed characters and more high jinx than Maison Ikkoku with a cheeky nod to Star Trek.

Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
With only 5,000 copies of the original print rumoured to be in circulation, this is one of the rarer titles for the Mega Drive and the price in Japan of the original often reflects this. Not merely collectable for its low print run though – its the finest shooter on the Mega Drive. The heroine of the title is a witch named Cotton, on a mission to find out why all the sweets have been poisoned. But it times it may seem like Cotton has had a strong dose of dental gas, such are the colourful, almost psychedelic nature of the graphics with genre defining effects. Smashing bosses, clean, creative anime cut scenes, original ‘chase view’ perspective, yet true to its title with free movement – this title is the best example of what the Mega Drive architecture can produce. Michelangelo would surely approve. Thankfully collectors can now own it and not just watch the original with tea cup on Antiques Roadshow.
Gamecube
RPG
A real Nintendo tour de force with Mario, Yoshi et al enjoying the colourful scenery, pseudo 2D look and Nintendo’s love of the gamer, never leaving you high and dry without a clue. So good it was remade for the Switch.
PS2
Rhythm
The Para Para dance craze swept Japan like the cherry blossom front with deeply tanned girls and bleached blond boys tossing about there limbs in the clubs from Shibuya to Sekijo. The game involves flicking out arms and legs in time to the beat and onscreen prompt proving a fine work out and building up a fine ability to para para!
PS2
Rhythm
Genki is a massive fan of Master Onion and its great to see him in such good form teaching martial arts. Beard Burger is also great fun as Parappa must flip and toast hamburgers in style under the pressure of the watching, hungry crowd. The 2D look works a treat and has aged like a fine claret.
Playstation
Rhythm
Genre defining release from Sony with eye catching graphical style and high degree of variety between levels. Master Onion has to be one of the coolest characters in the gaming world. “Kick, punch: its all in the mind. If you want to test me, I’m sure you’ll find…” It may just be Simple Simon, but when its this much fun…

PC Kid is to the Engine what Sonic and Mario are to Sega and Nintendo. But Genki reckons he could have them both in a fight using his forehead to attack enemies as he does. Fun filled platform romp with original twists in an often cliched genre. Also known as ‘Genjin’ and ‘Bonk’.
PC Engine HU Card

Sega Saturn

PS2
Sports
Gekitou Pennant Race is a fine baseball game taking a realistic approach to the sport with superb looking graphics and scintillating sounds. All that’s missing is the smell of hot dogs. Or perhaps tako yaki being distinctly set in Japan. Enix has its own distinctive approach to the sport which feels fresh next to the usual big hitters. Prefixed in Japanese by ‘Ore ga Kantoku da.’ Or ‘I am the coach.’
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Released along side the PSP update of the Playstation original twelve years on, yet still as charmingly refreshing as when first released. Includes remixed and rearranged tracks as well as originals with Gatten Sushi and Velvet Room amongst the ten top tracks.
