Shooter

Here we have all the games in the Shooter Section.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Forced scrolling pre-historic shooting action with all manner of attacks awaiting including throwing stars and more dinosaurs than you could shake a stick at. The Famicom takes it all admirably in its stride despite the plethora of on-screen action Known in Japan as Shin Jinrui.
Miscellaneous Games
Shooter
Splendid conversion of the nausea inducing arcade monolith, unfortunately without giant hydraulic cockpit, but all the rest is very well represented. Old school mechanics and high tension, adrenalin fuelled action from a golden era of the coin op when Sega ruled supreme.
Dreamcast
Shooter
Full on cockpit view to cause a bit of a potential for motion sickness: not quite of the proportions of the Gloc 360 arcade machine. The game blends arcade spills with a bit more gumption required than just trigger finger blasting in order to progress with the on screen hairline and overall presentation giving a good sense of piloting a lethal flying machine.
Playstation
Shooter
ine interpretation of Ridley Scot’s dark, organic world full of aliens with acid for blood. Moves very well, but not as fast as Genki when one of those critters scurries after us.
PS2
Shooter
Its surprising how intuitive controlling a massive mecha can become and, with a good range of movements to master, players soon can strafe with the finest before unleashing a powerful rocket into an opponents mid rift.
PSP
Shooter
Its possible to pick up and mash a few buttons in this superb incarnation of the Formula Front series. Yet to truly prosper players must pilot their mech to its strengths whilst being aware of its weaknesses. The fact Genki likes to hit and run may reveal too much about our character.
PS4
Shooter
Great to be back feeling the raw power of the mech just as in the original classic. The lighting effects are stunning to add to the sense of awe and there is plenty of thunder in the weaponry on offer to the hulking titanium mecha suit. Like welcoming in an old friend: appearances may have changed a little, but the understanding is there.
Switch
Shooter
Sequel to the superb Mega Drive and Super Famicom crackers, Leynos 2 features more exo skeleton related mayhem and maintains the clunky metal feel of the original as the suits are dropped behind enemy lines and straight into the thick of it. Ginormous bosses and relentless onslaught from enemy mechs makes this one tough exoskeleton to crack. A true delight to have it revamped for the Switch. Bravo!
PS5
Shooter

🥇Game of the Week
Game of the Week Switch
Shooter
Gamers of a certain vintage will be purring having lapped up the Cybernator action which sees the weighty mech feel every tonnage as it lands on the platforms and then utilises booster to jets to glide through the side scrolling shooter sections. Such a work of love with incredible attention to detail and another must-have Superdeluxe delivery for gamers who know their claret from their Beaujolais.
Nintendo DS
Shooter
A National Treasure gets a worthy update to hopefully woo more with its charms. Full of tongue in cheek humour as you’d expect from this developer and some very funny English translations. Huge title with plenty of levels and even a level editor for the DS version. Cunning counter attack method involves waiting until your ship is in imminent danger before launching the counter, and the results are the more spectacular depending on the level of danger. And based on the experience of past competitions, Treasure have made data transferable via sound so that another DS can upload it or even it can even be sent onto the net for the real high rollers.
Playstation
Shooter
Takes a new look at the Resident Evil empire by placing you in a first person shooter scenario charging around the various zombie and rabid dog infested locales from the series. The musical score gives a sense of foreboding and sure enough a Romero reject is never too far away from lunging at you.
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
A spiritual sequel to Operation Wolf, but this time the player traverses in an Ikari Warriors style. Gritty to the point where you can almost hear the grenade pin squeaking in teeth, the action is complemented by Nam 75 style into the screen shooting battles. Classic arcade shooting.
Mega Drive
Shooter
Forced scrolling shooter of legendary fame on the Mega Drive with slick, sharp reflexes a requisite to see more of the parallax scrolling and attention to detail, like the flickering flame lamps, not that you get much time to savour it. Imaginative levels and bosses plus smooth animation with fine scaling make this an all time entry into the vintage Mega Drive vault.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Run and gun action as players charge into the screen avoiding the pillar boxes, motorbikes and hand grenades as everything including the kitchen sink gets thrown at you to prevent your advance. Its hard not to warm to such gameplay with simple objectives and nothing to blame but your own lack of skill (and possibly army training) for not progressing and meeting the mission goal.

Dreamcast
Shooter
Sega does Bond with some fine tongue in cheek humour as you choose from two sleek spies to take out the bad guys in a flurry of trigger finger action in classic light gun style. Has a few moments to interrupt the trigger happy action though, such as a chance to shoot a key or bunging up a toxic gas leak which keep you on your toes and alter the games course. Not too many gun games on the DC making this one to really savour especially in two player mode.
🔜Pre-order
Switch
Shooter
Super Contra is rightly cherished by many gamers of a Nintendo persuasion, so to see Contra back and looking so good whilst remaining true to the run and gun, grenade pin in mouth gameplay of the original brings a tear to the eye. Not that there is any allowance for blurry vision or nostalgia – reflexes need to be as sharp as ever to progress.
Mega Drive
Shooter
Overhead perspective strategic action blast in which espionage is the order of the day as enemy bases are sabotaged with bombs placed in the correct position within the time limit. Ammo is limited but the emphasis is more on stealth as Konami’s more famous title implemented equally well with varied levels of guard AI. A two player cooperative mode is very cunningly implemented and much more enjoyable than many two player competitive modes.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Claustrophobic answer to Kileak the Blood on the Playstation as the dytopic future is invested with plenty of firepower from the mechas armoury. The first person, cockpit view from the mech works a treat and adds to the tension with nice attention to detail as interference affects the monitor view.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Cavernous underground tunnels and sprawling over land arenas to explore in this fine 3D shooter with exploratory elements. Picked up quite a following in the day.
Mega Drive
Shooter
On the rails shooter where the screen scrolls along as Duke shoots into it like in the Neo Geo classic Nam 75 and I suppose Operation Wolf. Masses of enemy attacks keep the action frantic and frenzied as your Uzi is in near danger of seizing up. A real blast from an arcade expert.
PSP
Shooter
Run and gun has never been quite this much fun as D3 shows its youth wasn’t all mis-spent knocking out B-movie style budget games. Alien invaders swarm and the screen is over-run with them at times, but the hardware handles it superbly.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Vertical scrolling shooting action bringing that arcade feel home to the Famicom that dominated homes from Honshu to Okinawa.
Game Gear
Shooter
Sound conversion of the 360 degree rotating arcade machine that came with appropriately placed panic button for those not quite up to making it in Top Gun. Each level demands a quota of enemy fighter planes or tanks be taken out to progress within the time limit. Deft pilots will find themselves able to stash away a few hard earned greenbacks to bolster weaponry and boost armoury.
Playstation
Shooter
Early PSX 3D shooter which adopts a Blade Runner style cityscape for the G Police to explore in futuristic copters. The cut scenes are plentiful, de rigueur at the time.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Giant robot themed first person shooter in which you take on the Ghen race out in space. Plenty of cheesy FMV with a few switches thrown in to keep you on your toes.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Tricky controls at first, but thats the real beauty of this mech sim as the training mode eases you into the cockpit soon you’ll have mastered the buttons giving a great feeling of acomplishment as you lay waste to other mecha. The controls also feel clunky like the weight of the machine adding to the realism. Clever use of lighting and weather effects keep the realism whilst reducing the draw distance and visually its a joy to behold.
Dreamcast
Shooter
Mech suited robot battling action with freedom to explore arenas and getting stunning visual performance out of the hardware. No Gundam game would be complete without mystery man in eyepatch avatar looking like a sinister extra from Galaxy Express 999. Subtitled Rise from the Ashes.
