Opponent AI makes the series’ rivals look like clod hopping donkeys. Konami’s elegant but deadly striker once again dons the cycling shorts to fire a flurry of well crafted volleys into the Fifa Soccer net. Looks an absolute delight on the small screen with realistically animated players that obey the laws of physics. Also has beautifully animated close ups of incidents such as players fighting, substitutions and, of course, the goal celebrations. But gameplay has always been where the series excels and this provides another footballing lesson to the opposition. Full complement of teams including Premier League, but only Chelsea and Arsenal are listed by their proper name and club badge. The rest still have all the correct players intact: accurately represented and very recognisable.

A title synonymous with the Sony brand returns to true form with its nitrous fuelled gameplay, adrenalin rush visuals and stylish club scene inspired, icon based presentation complete with a sublime soundtrack. Most importantly the ship’s handling has been tightened up giving it a less floaty feel placing the blame for clipped wings firmly on the drivers shoulders. The energy charge lane (a la F-Zero) has now been replaced with the need to use weapon power ups for in race repairs adding a tactical element to events. Pure and simply cool- bravo Sony Liverpool for such a cultured title.

Tests the drivers concentration as the break neck speed employed by the programmers ensures its essential to keep a beady eye on the hints as to which corner comes next. Very nice celebratory scene in reaching the podium, for those who appreciate their sprites.

Good take on the sport that covers the basics of the game well, perhaps being quite a difficult sport to cover with rucks, mauls, line outs and scrums to include. Yet the freedom to run as the ball breaks free makes this good fun as players bid to capture the cup.

The hard work that went into the players sprite appearance still has charm today. Plenty of space to exploit in terms of playing area with quick, well timed passes require to succeed just as in the real game.

Whilst the basic play mechanics with the slick passing system are easy to pick up, it takes the patience of a Dutch master to be able to fully manipulate players to perform deft overhead flicks and inch perfect through balls. The first football series to add crossing as a viable option for goal scoring and no two goals are ever the same.

The Winning Eleven game engine plays such a smooth, silky game that it would win over even the ficklest of football fans. EA has its graphics, Konami has its refined gameplay.
