PS2
A Bit Special
Namco certainly has a back catalogue worthy of raiding as this compilation remonstrates: Mr. Driller, Kaze no Klonoa, Tekken, Ridge Racer and Ace Combat 2. As you’d expect souped up visuals and slick presentation with movie clips and artwork from the games. Play the games as the makers intended.
Nintendo 64
Action
Based loosely on the Shadows of the Empire book the devlopers have used a fair slice of artistic license and why not when it means you can add in bad boy bounty hunter Boba Fett who didn’t appear in the book? The first few levels are actually based on the Empire Strikes Back including a delightful rendition of taking down an AT-AT using the winch. Taking on TIE fighters is also a real treat for Star Wars fans with excellent variety throughout the game.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Plenty of twists, turns, snow drifts, flips and fun in this fine take on snowboarding that captures some of its carefree attitude to careering down the slopes at break neck speeds. Nice take on the genre and looking nice on the Nintendo roku jyu yon.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Rare does Mickey and the Mario Kart style race action makes good use of the license as the racers all have chit-chat in the style of their character. The locales are fun too: beachside, through the mansion, besides the obligatory ice level to skid around and Grand Canyon.
Dreamcast
RPG
A sample of the main game that includes about ten hours gameplay and could be upgraded to the full game on payment of the fee. Sadly the online Dreamcast servers flicker no more, but this remains a fine collectable and sample of the delightful Arcadia arena. Known as Skies of Arcadia in the West.
Dreamcast
Sports
Sega Rally really captured the reason why fans spend their Sunday mornings avoiding careering vehicles in off-the-beaten-track forests: power sliding round hairpin bends with wheels spinning to kick out on the home straight. Sublime.
Super Famicom
Platform
Redesigned packaging to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of this still stunning Super Famicom platformer with gothic overtones, stunning shafts of sunshine and fleeting shadows. A rare SFC title in the mould of such sublime titles as Demons Crest and Nosferatu with a twist of the graphical skills of the Actraiser teams. Some of the in-game assailants and bosses are more than a bit twisted looking like they just broke out of the Splatter House. The main hero can thankfully upgrade his skills as the supernatural bosses are dispatched – all the way up to the big hoedown with the Demon King. And these transformations help even if the concept of becoming a demon to beat them doesn’t sit too nicely when surrounded by such creepy creatures.
🥇Game of the Week
PS5
Shoot Em Up
Taking the original Reboot that sought authenticity to the original and cutting a bit loose on the broomstick with a new character, extra multipliers, graphical shift and the highly amusing enemy capture adding much hilarity. Gaming veterans Beep reveal their retro tattoos and it’s a young witch on a broomstick. A fine series to go back to, especially such a relatively unknown version.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Raiden Fighters, Raiden Fighters 2 and Raiden Fighters Jet make up the trio of this compilation that goes in all guns blazing and takes no prisoners. The soundtrack is relentless, the in game characters given a millennial make over, yet veteran gamers may fear not as the action remains true to its pure adrenalin roots. Some may even be tempted to take advantage of the different play modes to flip back through a particularly turbulent section. A fine tribute to a much-loved series.
Switch
Shooter
Spiritual sequel to Genki fave Kikikaikai and full of the same bizarre cultural references that makes it seem like sheer madness, yet thankfully plays like a dream. One eyed and legged umbrellas await an opportunity to spring into action, kawaii little ghosts seek refuge from Super Mario World, Oni and long nosed goblins look on from the shadows under the gaze of Buddhist statues. And its great to be back.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
M2 hears Genki’s cry for a Super Easy mode to go with the Arcade difficulty. The graphical style looks superb with the foreground vehicles lovingly realised and the Gothic style to the chacters making this ooze its STG style.
GameBoy Color
RPG
Genki imagines it would have taken little effort to convert this charming RPG to here on the GameBoy Color and later to the GBA, PSX and PSP, such is the visual standard attained in the original Super Famicom version. And it is no doubt responsible for fuelling a series that flourishes on thanks to its imaginative enemies and emotive soundtrack, to pluck just a couple of reasons from its over flowing barrel.
Wonderswan
Simulation
Being a Bandai enterprise the Gundam saga is well represented on the WonderSwan. Fans of the series who can name all the mecha can rejoice in these animated battle scenes.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Solid conversion of the eternal shmup with some clever parallax. Whilst mutiple routes mean there are only seven levels to get through, the replay value is massive with twenty eight levels to savour. There must have been some catfish in the Taito office at the time judging by all the aquatic themed and highly imaginative enemies you need to take down.
Merchandise
Merchandise
A beautiful work of art highlighting the creativity of the Darius series in this soft key ring. The infamous Green Coronatus brings back sweaty palms to gamers of a certain vintage.
Mega Drive
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Fine, retro feel to the gameplay in a genre itself that is long since forgotten. Yet Konami made a real splash with its arcade scrolling fighters and Turtles fits its masterplan with quick paced gameplay and the ability to pummel an opponent once their collar can be gripped. Good variety in the gameplay as players go from rusty 80’s downtown to surfing the high seas, catching up with pirate ships.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Sprightly puzzle game where tiles must be rotated to clear the screen: much easier in practise than words. Adopts various styles to the game view be it the dynastic classical Chinese mahjong tiles, fantasy role playing medieval style or playing cards on the beach setting. Famous for its small box styling: one of only a handful of Mega Drive games released in mini boxes.
Wonderswan
One on One Beat Em Up
Colourful and fluid animation as you’d expect for a game based on the unpredictable, pirate anime. Shows the raw potential of the Wonderswan in the right hands. Full of maritime frolics and high jinx just like its television counterpart.
Wonderswan
Sports
Golf games always work well on handheld systems and Wonder Classic is no exception. Only two characters initially selectable, but a bit of perseverence will allow you to unlock secret character Chuck Morris who can belt the ball harder than his namesake Chuck Norris. Also rumoured to be hidden in the carts depths are unlockable Valyrie and Mr Driller players.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Import only and as such the rarest release featuring Rolling Thunder complete with ammo rooms to duck into, Wonder Momo, King & Balloon, Dragon Saber (sequel to Dragon Spirit), Rompers, Skykid and Moto. King & Balloon has you popping balloons that keep trying to whisk your girl away. Rompers is the hidden gem with arcade puzzle action as you push walls on to dinosaurs. Simple and highly addictive. Complete with scans of the original arcade posters and photo’s of the motherboards. Games can also be played vertically as initially intended.
Neo Geo AES
One on One Beat Em Up
Massive Neo Geo series from the 2D fighting grandmaster SNK. Some wonderful playable characters to choose from including the superbly named Korean Taekwondo expert KimKap Hwan and wide girthed Chinese gent Cheng Sinzan.
