Playstation
Simulation
Takes a turn based strategic approach to mecha warfare (similar to Front Mission) as opposed to the previous clunky metal shoot ’em ups. Keep an eye on your soldiers for signs of overheating and short circuiting through the cockpit view. Well animated and pretty presentation of the intercom conversations and cut scenes.
Famicom Cart
Action
Japan exclusive, four wheel drive action racer with smaller cars to allow plenty of on screen action. Feels like the inspiration behind Micro machines, but don’t let Codemasters hear that. Its necessary to bash opponent vehicles off the screen and quite satisfying to do so. Especially when tuned up with a raging power up on the go.
GameBoy Original
Puzzle
Clear the blocks from the screen by shooting them to extend their length and turn them into big squares. They then disappear in time for another wave descending down the screen.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Never has a game character been more suited to rolling around on screen more than Kirby – Hal Laboratory’s rotund, pink creation. Cute, cuddly and colourful with the tight play mechanics Nintendo always delivers.
GameBoy Original
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Miniature version of Renegade for the GameBoy with the Kunio crew suiting being shrunk down to squat characters to squabble it out. Such a slick gaming engine it was released as Double Dragon II in the West.
GameBoy Color
Sports
Cute and cuddly Nintendo themed tennis title with Mother style cute sprite graphics and a devious undercurrent of tough, uncompromising AI that’ll only allow those with a full array of shots and the intelligence to use them to reach the pinnacle of the sport. Happy days with Princess Peach looking good in her tennis pinks and 64GB Pack compatibility allowing custom players to be transferred with a special bonus making this a must for any Nintendo collector.
GameBoy Advance
Platform
A conversion of Super Mario Bros. 3 and classic platforming gameplay it is as players get misty eyed dispatch a turtle shell into a Koopa or two. Looking tip top and Bristol fashion on the GBA, it’s a pleasure to go back and savour some good, clean gameplay exploring pipes and the vast potential of completing collecting all coins.
Virtual Boy
Sports
Only contains one course, but as such alot of thought has gone into positioning bunkers and water hazards. The shot power meter needs good reflexes to be stopped correctly, followed by the cursor on the centre of the ball to avoid slicing into the trees. Crisp digitised sound effects and speech hint at the VB’s potential.
Playstation
Action
More high jinx on the seven seas between Luffy and crew with a catapult and stretchy arms thrown if for good measure. All very nicely animated with sunshine settings and tasty beer and rice ball power ups capturing the energetic spirit of the manga. Each character is portrayed accurately with their own unique trait such as Zoro’s three swords. Gameplay is like Power Stones madcap action clashing with Super Smash Brothers arcade style fight mechanics. Any chance of a Captain Pugwash release in a similar mould?!
Playstation
RPG
Input from the Final Fantasy producer and a near army of playable characters each with their own story setting Chrono Cross in the top flight of RPG games living up to the weighty burden the prequel created. Players can combine attacks together adding a tactical element to the combat and its nice to be able to see a potential battle sequence unfolding so it can be avoided for the battle weary.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Ticks all of Genki’s boxes: fighting blokes in rubber suits, cheesy 70’s soundtrack and our Kamen Rider himself looking like a big-eyed fly. Superbly captures the essence of the series.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Once again hats off to Namco: Adventure of Valkyrie, Pac Attack, King of Kings and Namco Classic II. Valkyrie is an absolute treat with its Kikikaikai style free roaming shooting gameplay and pixel perfect realisation of the fantasy styled world. Pac Attack throws the infamous ghosts into a Tetris style puzzle game and the odd Pac drops down from the heavens too to gobble them up. Namco Classics is a golf game with Neo Geo style kawaii caddy and King of Kings is a little known war sim.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Twenty nine characters of which two are bosses offers plenty of moves and martial techniques to master as the King of Fighters series grew up in this forward thinking incarnation. Lavishly realised stages including the former Osaka HQ of SNK and more frames of animation for the combatants, but its the speeded up gameplay with greater emphasis on combos’ that makes this hard to beat. Projectile attacks have been shortened so they no longer continue endlessly making for tight close combat.
Playstation
Action
Played in Matrix style environments that break up as they are destroyed to reveal sparking circuitry beneath, players take control of one of the three female androids charged with extinguishing the alien threat. Each lovely android has her own attributes: the all rounder, the slow, but punch packing and the nippy but weedy requiring different androids for the various missions and the weapons are very satisfying. Controls are similar to Virtual On with the analogue sticks coming to the fore: soon mastered though giving a great sense of interaction. The anime cut scenes are of production quality and good reward for a hard fought battle. Yet to see the whole selection takes time and increases the replay value multi-fold with performance determining which sequence is rewarded.
GameBoy Color
A Bit Special
Tour the Pokemon card clubs to challenge the members and hopefully get a shot at beating the leader. Quick thinking is required to try and gain all eight master cards and become the mythical Pokemon card master. Its possible for players to create their own custom deck with the real fun being trying to complete the full album. Nice overhead persepective to the exploration with cute sprites suiting the GameBoy Color’s screen drawing players in once again to that Pokemon world. Also known as Pokemon Card Trading Game.
Sega Saturn
Stimulation
Subtitled ‘The Throbbing Nightmare’, this cos-play inspired dating simulator comes with a yellow label warning. Multiple endings possible.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Visit the slot machine and pachinko parlours of Japan under the master guidance of the king of spin Sammy. Genki wont be held responsible for anyone developing a pachinko habit and hanging around outside parlours exchanging prizes for cash.
Super Famicom
Sports
Released on many formats including the Saturn (as the saucy ‘Wangan’ series) and the Dreamcast and later platforms as the ‘Tokyo Highway Battle’ and variants, the roots of the series can be found here on the Super Famicom. Plenty of appearances of the Drift King who endorsed the series and looks slightly suspicious in his large sunglasses. Race against an opponent or solo in illegal highway showdowns through Tokyo Metropolis.
Famicom Cart
Action
Known as Robo Warrior in the West, the Bomber King must get through the levels by dropping bombs to clear a path whilst taking down the array of enemies taking pot shots at your mecha suit. Good blend of tactics and action.
Famicom Cart
Action
Popular sequel as players bravely explore the cavernous levels that hide dinosaurs besides the obvious dragon or two. Fast pace and looking very prim and pretty on the Famicom. Simple gaming pleasures as Namco has a flair for.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Kinnikuman is an alien prince whose escapades are detailed in the Shonen Jump manga. This is a whacked out wrestling game could teach the WWF games a half nelson or two.
