Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Exemplifying all the hit points that made the Saturn a mean 2D machine. Cute sprite graphics and good pacing. One for every Saturn blaster head’s collection.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Reaching back into what feels to Genki like the near past in compiling three precious (and fairly exclusive) Saturn shooters in Cotton 2, Cotton Boomberang and Guardian Force. Cotton 2 exemplifies all the hit points that made the Saturn a mean 2D machine. Cute sprite graphics and good pacing. Boomerang is not a full sequel to Cotton 2, more feeling like a very slick update as there wasn’t anything really in need of correcting in the prequel. The controls have been revamped along with gameplay additions of a special charge projectile and the facility to switch between three different players. As such the energy bar has gone: each player now represents a life. The in game graphics have been given a lick of paint with some impressive effects hurtling the player into more on screen insanity. The presentation has also been spruced up with hi resolution cut sequences and an intro to give twitchy fingers a break. A true success saving the best until last. Guardian Force is a unique take on the shooter formula with players taking the role of tank driver to blast through enemy lines. No mere gimmick though: in a refreshing twist the tanks turret can rotate through 360 degrees making it possible to pound enemy installations whilst making a hasty retreat. The simultaneous two player option is the icing on the pretty looking cake. A dream team compilation and a real blast.

PS4
Shoot Em Up
Gaming veterans Beep reveal their retro tattoos and it’s a young witch on a broomstick. The incredibly successful shooter gets an updated X68000 version plus the original conversion to keep the purists abated. The updated version has a Jewel Fever multiplier and a real lick of graphical paint with some rearranged cheeky tunes. A fine series to go back to, especially such a relatively unknown version.

Taking the original Reboot that sought authenticity to the original and cutting a bit loose on the broomstick with a new character, extra multipliers, graphical shift and the highly amusing enemy capture adding much hilarity. Shoot Em Up
Cotton Rock n Roll brings the series into the new generations and it looks very charming for it. Great use of 3D backgrounds and adversaries, but the action remains true to its 2D roots. The star of Umihara Kawase makes a guest appearance riding on an inflated puffer fish. Just what the doctor ordered.

Mega Drive
Shooter
Overhead perspective strategic action blast in which espionage is the order of the day as enemy bases are sabotaged with bombs placed in the correct position within the time limit. Ammo is limited but the emphasis is more on stealth as Konami’s more famous title implemented equally well with varied levels of guard AI. A two player cooperative mode is very cunningly implemented and much more enjoyable than many two player competitive modes.
Playstation
Simulation
A cracking title in which you get to become a master crane operator through the various stages and challenges including pulling out fish as in the child’s toy fishing game. There is also an expert course to graduate aswell as the grind of work mode where going about your duties is strangely gratifying. Only in Japan, but well worth a spin. Known as Crane Master ni Narou in Japan. See also Shovel Master and Machine master in the Kenki Ippai series.

Playstation
Platform
Tasmanian Devil styled Crash Bandicoot charges into the screen adding to the feel of rampaging as he spins and bounds across obstacles and adversaries. Genki particularly likes ice levels with reflective sheets of ice and plenty of slip sliding away. Happy memories.
Playstation
Action
Many fine gaming moments have been provided through improper gameplay: playing he game not quite as intended. Crash Bandicoot Carnival has the feel of such a game as players crash crates on top of opponents heads and scrap it out for power-ups in the arena based mash-up melee.
Super Famicom
Action
The flexible and sometimes dispensable nature of the Crash Dummies make them perfect to platforming. Being able to inflate also helps get through tricky spots in this overlooked platformer. Full title: The Incredible Crash Dummies.

Sports
Old Kunio kun couldn’t just have an athletics meet, oh no. The impressive 3D swimming level sees players able to switch lanes and assault mid stroke and hurdles get chucked across to fellow athletes too. The long jump and pole vault are particularly punishing being held between sky-scrapers. At least the Judoka behave as they should. Known in Japan as Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku Harukanaru Kin Medal.
Super Famicom
Platform
Fitting into the action platform genre comes a licensed game based on the escapades of the well known (at least in Japan) Shin Chan – drawn as if by crayon. Full of imagination and a refreshing visual style and never lacking in colour.

GameBoy Original
Simulation
In depth exploration of the Shin Chan world and it certainly never lacks intrigue. Enjoyable and friendly escapades on the well loved GB handheld.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
Used with the Datach system, this is a mini cart collectable that uses the chips of the Datach to shrink cart size down. Puzzle fun based on the wildly drawn Crayon Shinchan world.
Game Gear
A Bit Special
The bizarre Crayon Shinchan world gets an appropriately off-kilter selection of mini games to savour in that unique graphical style like a child’s doodles. Great variety: from pumping balloons to a fun fair shoot out via digging for treasure on the beach.
Merchandise

Crayon Shichan is a popular character in Japan. Not too sure on his pose here, but best not to ask too many questions of this fine plush.
Famicom Cart
Action
Classic gameplay that has aged well as players must hot foot it up skyscrapers avoiding falling plant pots, helicopters, King Kong and even UFOs. A fall after so much hard work getting up fifty storeys is hard to bear making for some determined, precision gameplay.
Wii
Action
Classic gameplay rekindled on the Wii with its unique control method suited to the action as players must hot foot it up skyscrapers avoiding falling plant pots, helicopters, King Kong and even UFOs. A fall after so much hard work getting up fifty storeys is hard to bear making for some determined, precision gameplay. Split screen two player mode is real, frantic fun.
Gamecube
Sports
Captures the airs and expansive feel of the original arcade source material perfectly as you whizz around town picking up fares. Time constraints soon pile on the pressure, but that’s where the knowledge comes in. Being able to power slide the corners helps too, as well as impressing cheerleader passengers…
PSP
RPG
An unusual setting for a role playing game being set inside an all female prison. The combat is tuned based. Players must toe the line or face being punished by means of a good spanking. That is not to say Genki approves of spanking. Nor do we wish to be blocked for references to it!
🏆Brilliant!
Brilliant PS2
Simulation
A more modern gaming genre in the shape of a game aimed at ladies dating. Plenty of bishonen style young men to chat to in this visual novel.
