Game Gear
Action
A break out game in which the paddles scroll vertically along the screen so as to be able to progress attacking enemies on the way. The paddle can also be rotated vertically and players are blessed with a second paddle to be able to keep the ball in play. Gothic theme like Devil Crash.
GameBoy Advance
RPG
An elementary school feel to the town exploration with toy shop as the role-playing action starts with droids, often transforming into the robot related adventure from the safety of the bedroom. A collectable for the GBA.
Mega Drive
Action
Captures the prohibition era feel of the gangster flick well as Mr Tracy goes after the mob. The levels scroll along and the tommy gun and old knuckle sandwich are used to progress. But an eye must be kept on underground activity in the background as gangsters take pot shots at our main man. The machine gun is used to take up an into the screen perspective to dish out some rough justice to these shady background scene shifters. Enjoyable bonus levels ensue where the quick witted private eye must distinguish between good and bad in a split second and dispatch one of them using the A, B or C buttons depending on their position. A nice film tie-in.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Think Mario Kart but with plane-based levels as well as Nintendo entrusts Rare with its fine intellectual properties based on the Donkey Kong universe. The action itself odes not tax much cerebrally and its great fun to unleash a well-timed weapon.
Famicom Cart
Action
Builds on the classic tunnel digging coin op cracker by this time using a harpoon to lance adversaries before bizarrely pumping them up. Players must be wary of the terrain collapsing around them though: no doubt due to too much tunnelling below. Got to keep on pumping it up: I like it.
Wonderswan
Stimulation
A digital universe with some bizarre, some very cute digimons to interact with a power up your own collection as Bandai backs its swan song to the hilt.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Rumoured to be an exploration into the possibility of doing VF 3 on the Saturn, J-Pop music video editor for fans of the top selling artist. Involvement of the legendary AM2 on the project.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Pinball game with good variation in the four tables including the Roman gladiator theme, feudal Japan theme and fantasy based themed tables keeping the accurate ball mechanics in a fresh environment. Very solid game of flipper. Just try not to nudge the TV too much in the heat of a game.
Super Famicom
Shoot Em Up
Old school shooter with big, bad bosses filling up most the screen that require taking down bit by bit. The unique feature is the ability to be able to shift altitudes to avoid confronting the meaner looking machines gunning for you which adds a nice tactical element to the battle. An enjoyable blast.
GameBoy Original
Simulation
Create a dinosaur which doesn’t require any toilet training thankfully. Battle against other dinosaurs to gain valuable HP points. Looking very cute on the GameBoy.
Playstation
Action
Builds the tension up slowly like the original Jurassic Park film and then cranks up the sweaty palm factor just when your least expecting it. Some great cinematic quality moments Spielberg would be proud of.
Mega Drive
Sports
Wolfteam adds another genre to its varied repertoire with this pinball game with bold and colourful dinosaur themed graphics. Boss battles add to the intrigue, just watch you don’t tilt your Mega Drive too far.

Looking like he just rocked up from the anime convention comes this fine tribute to Ortho complete with harness, mask and shock of blue, spikey hair.
Figures
Figure
Twisted Wonderland box, small booklet plus an even more wonderful Grimm mascot included as a bonus gift.
Gamecube
Action
A quest based adventure as the mouse everybody loves seeks the pieces of the broken mirror to get back home. The gaming world looks a treat, as if Disney would have it any other way but with the added Capcom polish it really shines with a sparkle. In game events can set off a frantic button bashing sequence to overcome the challenge. And the mini games such as flying a plane around collecting items or snowboarding down the slopes provide a good clean fun diversion. Can be linked to the GBA through the link cable (game and cable sold separately) to change around the Magical Mirror world.
Playstation
Platform
Pseudo 2.5 3D look to the platforming action with some delightful Konami classy touches such as making a splash tubing down the waterfall or hitting the backside of the animal to be able to use it for higher reaching jumps. The jungle looks ace and the overall package shows plenty of care and attention.
Mega Drive
Platform
DJ Boy seems to be the sort of character Japanese games companies come up with when trying to create the all American kid with his roller blades and cap on backwards. The game has also tried to capture an all American apple pie flavour but comes out a rather bizarre and entertaining eclectic mix complete with wind breaking bosses and a male stripper. Very entertaining however if you like Japanese slap stick humour, especially the vanquished boss cut scenes.
GameBoy Advance
Sports
A fine tribute to the Japanese school playground favourite with power moves and some very enjoyable backgrounds including a tribute to the Miyajima sea shrine. Pleasant player animation brings out the character of this Kunio inspired title.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
The chain meter clanks up as players shoot down adversaries to help boost score for the cool trigger-fingered gamers out there. The Akiba influence is definitely there too as players are assaulted from enemies from high school girl assailants to mecha maids. But underpinning the pink bullet eye candy are solid shooter mechanics and some sturdy level design. The on the ground vehicles keep players eyes twitching between multi levels as tanks grind along and trains whiz by. The water transparencies are exquisite too as ships fly out from under the surface having trailed the players vessel. But the slender Switch’s raw power is also harnessed to make the bosses perform the odd 3D rotational twist workout. Also known as Dodonpachi Resurrection.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
M2 hears Genki’s cry for a Super Easy mode to go with the Arcade difficulty. The graphical style looks superb with the foreground vehicles lovingly realised and the Gothic style to the chacters making this ooze its STG style.

PSP
RPG
Team based RPG with very impressive amount of polygons shifted around by the hardware along with the quality orchestral score. Players must fight hard at times to clear the quest: the giant tarantula boss being a particular hurdle for those with arachnophobia.
PS2
Simulation
Nintendogs was not the original dog game: Konami had been keeping young pups in line for some time before with the Dogstation arcade machine and this PS2 home version. Don microphone and bark orders to your little puppy to train it up. Progress and you can buy collars and leads to make it the smartest pup in the neighbourhood. Just be sure to put plenty of newspaper down around your PS2.
Miscellaneous Games
Action
Arcade level graphical achievements and gameplay to match as the players penguin pecks platforms to negotiate a safe passage for the egg through the screens laden with traps and adversaries. A real gem in Sega’s crown that shows why it enjoyed the fine times ahead.
PS4
Action
Brutal battles as the terrifying force of the weaponry is felt. Starkly mixes cyborgs and giant organic insectoid bosses, creating a cinematic like experience.
GameBoy Advance
Platform
Famicom Mini Series capture the imaginative packaging and the unforgiving, old school gameplay of the source material from the Nintendo Famicom Disk Drive – never released outside Japan. The Series was commissioned to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Famicom or NES. Old school barrel jumping action reminiscent of the playground smash Game & Watch title.

Any game featuring colourful fruit power ups can’t be bad in Genki’s eyes and Donkey Kong Junior is in fine fettle as the wee monkey leaps from vine to vine in a more aerial assault on his papa gone crackers. Vintage gaming from an exciting era of home consoles.
