RPG

Here we have all the games in the RPG Section.
Playstation
RPG
Voted one of the most emotional games ever and even a hardened veteran like Genki had a tear in the eye through the scene itself. A sign of its compelling nature that it can strike such emotion in players once they are fully enveloped in the story.
Playstation
RPG
Continues to move, shake and stir after the emotionally draining experience of the prequel which will have drawn a tear from even the most grizzled gaming veterans eye. Squaresoft maintains its own standards when it comes to quality and its consistent demands of improved visuals and slicker stories is never more evident in the leap made here.
PS2
RPG
The Titanic of gaming as Squaresoft really find their rhythm on the hardware to produce a stunning piece of software. Its full mastery of the hardware is as clear as the water transparencies, yet the thread of strong gameplay and story telling remain undiminished since the Famicom days. A real gamers fantasy and well worthy of a PS3 update.
PS2
RPG
The core gameplay remains just as exquisite as its Playstation incarnations, yet the visual level would make a J Pop star blush with intense attention to detail and amazing models to endear the player to the characters (or otherwise.) Uncle Squaresoft still can tell a great post-dinner yarn, so pull up a pew and savour the experience which envelops gamers like a familiar blanket.

Uncle Squaresoft still can tell a great post-dinner yarn, so pull up a pew and savour the experience which envelops gamers like a familiar blanket in this remix of FFX-2.
PS2
RPG
A data disk to boost the vast size of the online Final Fantasy XI world. Online has taken the series to unimaginable heights when its original, humble roots are considered.
PS2
RPG
Epic escapades with superb cinematics spliced with clever 3D combat that gets the player involved in the action rather than observing. Incredible production values: the man hours are visible which ever way you spin to avoid the cold steel sword zipping past your ears. Yet again Square Enix raises the bar.
Nintendo DS
RPG
Just like with Mystic Quest for the Super Famicom, Square have gone back to their roots and produced an entry level RPG for those with little experience of the genre. Yet there is little here that will offend the grizzled RPG veteran – few will complain at the intuitive stylus controls and absence of excessive HP battles. The look is stunning – breath takingly refreshing and a clear triple-A release. Not a sequel to the PS2 version, but more of an off-shoot allowing interested parties to find out what happened to Vaan et al after the PS2 FFXII.
PS4
RPG
An expansion pack for FF XIV introducing more roles in terms of jobs and the rumoured ability to fly. Its a shame they cant be included in the original release with so many updates and expansion packs around, but perhaps Genki is getting a bit too entrenched in the old school?
Super Famicom
RPG
Sadly not the 776 release which attracts pension funds, such is its year on year value inflation. But true gamers will cherish this standard version of the Nintendo RPG just as much. As ever, Nintendo’s standards set the bar which others must attain and this fine piece of programming could only be called a flop in terms of the Fosbury Flop, such as it raises the bar. A beautiful gaming world and a moving gaming experience.
Super Famicom
RPG
Kenshiro et al are well suited to the three quarter perspective view RPG world as they are such an intriguing bunch of bad dudes. Hot in pursuit of abducted fair lady, but best not to be too keen as a boulder tumbles down to hinder your mission. Battles take on the side of fight perspective as various martial commands are executed with expert panache.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Well loved series that spanned the console generations successfully with its fine, fantasy RPG gameplay and plenty of emotive moments that pull on the heart strings as much as the orchestra has pulled on the cello strings.
GameBoy Color
RPG
Places the player into the sublime Goemon world as a young lad who then teams up with the blue spiky haired one (not Sonic) to savour the fine hospitality of ancient Japan and take on a crop of unsavoury folk and creatures causing havoc.

Playstation
RPG
The Suikoken series is based on the Chinese classic Water Margin and is a highly regarded RPG amongst the cognoscenti. Full title: Genso Suikoden.
Playstation
RPG
Stunningly illustrated sprites along with soothing soundtrack that can snap to contain more menace than the Flight of the Valkyries within an instant. Genki wonders how its possible to weave together so many different, deep characters.
PS2
RPG
Lusciously shaded in pastel colours making for a beautiful world to romp around exploring. Once accustomed to its ways, you will barely notice the talking duck in helmet or the giant eagle to hitch a lift. Vastly underrated series.
PS2
RPG
Exquisitely detailed gaming world that is very accessible due to the isometric perspective. Set in a ancient European town, the castles, markets and inns look stunning and Konami has clearly put the hard yards in to ensure the ongoing success of the series. It may not come as a surprise to hear those castles also feature dark and pretty dank dungeons.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Popular role playing game that unusually seems set in ancient Greece or the Roman empire. A good emporium is needed to ensure being sufficiently equipped to progress in the turn-based combat.
Sega Saturn
RPG
One of the Saturn’s finest RPGs which is more than sufficient recommendation given the plethora of on the system. Solid, workable combat system. Painstakingly detailed graphics.
PS2
RPG
One of the Saturn’s finest RPGs (which is more than sufficient recommendation given the plethora of on the system) which proved so popular as a Dreamcast update that it also made it to the PS2. Painstakingly detailed towns to explore in this ‘Skies of Arcadia’ style RPG.
Dreamcast
RPG
One of the Saturn’s finest RPGs (which is more than sufficient recommendation given the plethora of on the system) gets a Dreamcast update. Painstakingly detailed towns to explore in this ‘Skies of Arcadia’ style RPG.
PS2
RPG
An RPG in the classic mould with beautiful sprites making for a believable gaming world. A well loved series and with such golden plot threads expertly woven into a tapestry worthy of the fine halls which feature within, RPG gurus will lap this up.
Super Famicom
RPG
Square unleashed in a fun filled Japanese cultural style RPG from the golden age of the Super Famicom RPG’s. Plenty of wacky characters of ‘Goemon’ proportions and self references to other Square franchises as the lighter side to Final Fantasy’s creators comes to the fore.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Pixel perfect Square graphics as it matches its own sprawling epic Final Fantasy with immense graphical attention to detail and imaginative boss battles plus plenty of side quests against wonderfully realised monsters. Sheer clash.
Mega CD
RPG
Originally on the Commodore Amiga, this occidental isometric RPG is based on Norse mythology. Ragnarok, the ultimate battle, is raging on earth and three of the gods have had their weapons stolen. To retrive them they give special powers to the chosen one, a mere mortal and thats where your mission begins.
Super Famicom
RPG
Well-respected Super Famicom title that has stood the test of time due to its massive slant on action in the RPG dungeon arena. Players control an orb and use it to fire at the hordes hidden in the dank depths or to break through the ice blocks to progress. Excellent boss battles ensue – ones to savour for those that don’t mind taking down the big fish, or dragon or two. Known as Firestriker in the West.
Famicom Cart
RPG
A role player set in a feudal Japan of temples, samurai and giant cat fish with human faces. Players traverse the landscape getting into the odd scrape with a grizzly bear or two.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Tidy, diminutive sprites that mean a screen fills the full map of that particular dungeon or maze. Definitely more of an action RPG with sword fights en route to grabbing key items with the chip tunes blasting out.
Super Famicom
RPG
Incredibly off beat and to be applauded for it making Mother 2 look very straight laced, middle America. The inventory system places value on clothing as opposed to amour and the modern world setting in itself makes for an unusual approach compared to the more common fantasy theme. Very tidy screen representation of the gaming world with a distinctly Japanese feel to the game. Subtitled Day of the Idea.
