Sega Saturn
RPG
Quite a cheesey title adding to its retro charm with the trio of heroines possessing the power to change into the Omakase (leave it to us) Savers. The FMV acting is all very tongue in cheek, but beneath the FMV gloss lies a very sound RPG which sees the schoolgirls soon deep in adventure.
Mega Drive
Platform
DJ Boy seems to be the sort of character Japanese games companies come up with when trying to create the all American kid with his roller blades and cap on backwards. The game has also tried to capture an all American apple pie flavour but comes out a rather bizarre and entertaining eclectic mix complete with wind breaking bosses and a male stripper. Very entertaining however if you like Japanese slap stick humour, especially the vanquished boss cut scenes.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Well crafted kick around with four player mode a scream, although as such unlikely to be contributing much to the Respect campaign. Utilises world teams and the game engine has a good balance of arcade feel with varied goal scoring.
Sega Hardware
Controller
Tidy spare pad in the white design with multicoloured buttons. Well designed feeling snug in the hand even when in the tightest of shmup corners facing a barrage of shrapnel.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Sega Sport’s success sprang from titles such as Victory Goal. Realistic low scoring games are common place between two players. Up to four players with multitap (not included.) Full complement of J League teams and official commentary.
Sega Hardware
Console
A more compact Saturn with a coloured buttoned joypad and an off white finish described as mist grey, but certainly alot more cheerful than the original release. Makes a great starter machine into which to enter one of the largest, unexplored galaxies of import stars.
Merchandise
DVD
Sing along to the saccharine sweet J-Pop songs as you strut your stuff alongside the computer generated images of Love and Berry. Nice tunes and locales to appreciate their charm.
Mega CD
Shoot Em Up
Full motion video shmup in a similar vein to Slipheed seeing you battling your fighter to the far away planet of Prism in order to get the super weapon to save the earth again!
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Gives you the role of producer of a music video for the rock band X Japan: certainly big in japan as the wealth of footage of their Tokyo Dome concert attests. Involves wandering around backstage and then choosing which camera angles to go with, along with plenty of video and audio material.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A wealth of avatars and animation from the epic anime opus to bring this series to life on the Sega Saturn and run rings around the opposition.
Mega CD
Simulation
Exploring the revolutionary Full Motion Video world with realistic graphics and CD quality sound and voice overs. Involves finding keys and searching around carefully (and a whole lot of butterflies.) Known as Yumemiyakata no Monogatari in Japan.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Refreshing European style take on the stragtegic RPG, especially as done from a Japanese developer’s perspective. Great attention to detail as troops shout before attacking.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Claustrophobic answer to Kileak the Blood on the Playstation as the dytopic future is invested with plenty of firepower from the mechas armoury. The first person, cockpit view from the mech works a treat and adds to the tension with nice attention to detail as interference affects the monitor view.
Mega Drive
One on One Beat Em Up
From the glory era of the initial Street fighter II craze that swept the console world came a slick Sega produced scrapper. Introduced a special moves bar that prevents crafty combatants from hammering the special moves too much. So a few combos practised down the training dojo may be the order of the day. Pays great attention to detail with stages having a special finishing move dependant on that areas background. All good fun and adding up to as marvellous martial fest.
Mega Drive
Sports
Open freeways with freedom of choice in the route to take, at least for those in control of the car enough when the fork in the road comes around. Highways are all set in different countries this time adding to the variety as you kick back with the radio blaring out and wind through your hair. Also has two player option.
Dreamcast
Board Game
Toilet obsessed title which looks like Goemon meeting a Mexican wrestler as participants in the board game use a slot machine wheel to determine their progress rather than a dice. Plenty of references to dropping the kids off at the school ensue in an intriguing insight into Japanese humour.
Sega Saturn
Platform
One of the first releases on the Saturn and fondly remembered by the Genki team. Nice, colourful 2D platformer forced into 2.5D by the hysteria for 3D graphics when the Saturn and Playstation were released.
Sega Saturn
Sports
ST-V arcade athletics fest made a real impression on the Saturn with smooth polygon graphics and all the button bashing thrills and spills of the arcade. Where as running events are simple button bashers, timing on the hurdles for example requires precision jumping and a break from frantic button pummelling. Comes into its own in multiplayer.
Dreamcast
Shooter
Sega does Bond with some fine tongue in cheek humour as you choose from two sleek spies to take out the bad guys in a flurry of trigger finger action in classic light gun style. Has a few moments to interrupt the trigger happy action though, such as a chance to shoot a key or bunging up a toxic gas leak which keep you on your toes and alter the games course. Not too many gun games on the DC making this one to really savour especially in two player mode.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Battle mech against mech through various arenas. Not quite on a of the same complexity as XBox Tekki, but true mastery requires a little bit of time to get to grips with the controls. But the rewards are a real delight once players can control the giant machines to lay waste to an opponent. Full screen play against a human opponent is possibly if you have the system link cable.
Mega Drive
Simulation
A board game from Japan brought to life by the intriguing characters featured within that ensure a lively pace.
PS2
Simulation
Sammy has fine lineage in the pachinko stable and excels here once again in recreating the parlour at home with colourful eye candy graphics and toe tapping tunes.
Dreamcast
RPG
Beautiful action RPG – think a 3D Princess Crown with an elliptical world, with fine attention to detail and platform action sections with tight jumps and steady nerves a prerequisite. Subtitled ‘Arsia in Day Dream.’
Sega Hardware
Console
A more compact Saturn with a coloured buttoned joypad and an off white finish described as mist grey, but certainly alot more cheerful than the original release. Makes a great starter machine into which to enter one of the largest, unexplored galaxies of import stars.
Nintendo DS
Action
Treasures work remains innovative and refreshing as the developer continually reinvents itself never resting on the laurels of its underground hardcore fan base. The anime’s distinct and sometimes creepy look with lurchingly tall characters has carried over effortlessly and the whole production oozes the sort of vintage claret class you’d expect from the aptly named developer. Mass four player brawls are possible, but the one player mode makes for interesting battles with what look like extras from Spirited Away but the lightening gameplay gives little opportunity to admire the scenery.
PS2
Sports
Puritans will head straight for the Arcade mode with its accurate and unforgiving top down conversion of the vintage coin op. Those less familiar with the original will find much fun and frolics wading around in the Grand Prix mode which features the ability to power up to a massive mobile, or to increase jump potential. Ambulances smash their way through the drivers to get to stricken drivers and there are more on screen calamities than Wacky Races. A fine claret that has matured to near arcade perfection.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A treasure hunt title known as Yukawa Otakara Sagashi in Japan that was a promotional disk, but could also be bought. Players at the time were lucky enough to be able to win ten thousand Yen to allow them to order the likes of Border Down or Space Channel 5.
Merchandise
DVD
Showing off the fine wares Sega had to offer during its exciting era as it entered the new millennia. Sega fan boys and girls will lap this up.
Gamecube
Action
Moves like a YouTube speed play video as Sonic zips across the platform levels with forays into 3D platforms too to take breath. The F-Zero tribute race stage is well worth a ride. Can also link to the GBA games to add extra special options.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, such as the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler.
Sega Hardware
Memory Card
Nice translucent blue finish to this VMU which allows users to toy around with their saved data. Dreamcast: we salute you.
Merchandise
Merchandise
A game catalogue full of niche charm to demonstrate the Dreamcast’s wares before YouTube. Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally 2, Power Stone plus another twelve games including Shenmue.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Sega performed an admirable conversion of the Data East arcade original in 1990 to boost the software available for its 16Bit baby. Vertically scrolling, power ups make the ship mutate and morph into a more souped up beast.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A visual novel with fine voice acting and plenty of anime humour in the emotional reactions of the Evangelion protagonists. Varied locales from vending machines, convenience stores, the school and train home.
PS2
RPG
Combines the fighting prowess of Sega’s Virtua Fighter series with action RPG elements in the ultimate fan service gesture. The game is played as young Sei who can power up by gaining moves from the familiar VF characters as well as take them on. Hopefully that doesn’t include leading the lad astray with Shun’s drunken style kung fu techniques.
Mega Drive
Action
Full of arcade action in the Ikari Warriors mould, Gain Ground has a good half century of well varied levels taking you through the ages keeping it visually fresh. Plays like a dream in two player with the goal being either to take everyone out in the time constrained levels or to get to the exit. Rescuing a hostage adds another member to your merry band to choose from with often an ace arsenal that goes with them. A real unheralded treat for Sega action fans.
Dreamcast
Sports
The Giant Gram series actually follows on from where Virtua fighter based All Japan Pro Wrestling left off on the Saturn. This makes the 2000 version the third instalment and an enjoyable hoedown even for those who leave the leopard spot leotards to the professionals. A bucket load of techniques to master including some super charged specials and counter moves, a commentator as keen as mustard, a crowd that’s easily whipped into a frenzy – what more could a grappler ask for apart from perhaps Giant haystacks on the roster of many All Japan Pro Wrestling legends? Four players can really have some button bashing fun.
Sega Saturn
RPG
A splendid, sprawling epic cocooned in a wonderful threads of story. Similar to Grandia except with the camera zooming in on the battles scenes in a cinematic style. The finest Saturn RPG?
Gamecube
Sports
Captures the airs and expansive feel of the original arcade source material perfectly as you whizz around town picking up fares. Time constraints soon pile on the pressure, but that’s where the knowledge comes in. Being able to power slide the corners helps too, as well as impressing cheerleader passengers…
Gamecube
Action
Sega uses its cute monkey to promote a devious version of Dizzy with pixel-perfect stops and a fine sense of momentum needed to complete the levels. Fun and never the play engine’s fault.
Game Gear
Sports
Football blast from the J League’s hey day playing a nice, arcadey kick about. A real laugh in two player mode using the link cable, but arguments may ensue over who gets to be Gary’s Grampus.
Game Gear
Sports
Very solid slugger for fans with enough to recommend it to those not so into the World Series. Newspaper back pages are often dedicated to the man Nomo (despite him plying his trade in America), so it’s only natural that we have a realistic Sega Sports title, packed full of Major League players and stats in his honour.
Mega Drive
Shooter
Launch title Thunder Blade brought the arcade home even down to the reverse cockpit controls in this accurate conversion that even had the thrill of take off announcing the new dawn of the 16Bit era. There were extras too for the Mega Drive with the addition of mid level bosses to beef up the challenge, switching from the 3D perspective to an overhead when the boss battle ensued.
Mega Drive
Platform
Forced scrolling platform action demands quick thinking at all times. Very cute, colourful and cartoony sprites and backgrounds add to the charm of this platform romp and the shooting sections provide a fun distraction.
PS2
Simulation
Subtitled ‘Boiling blood’ (atsuki chishioni), a hybrid version of the original given a complete graphical overhaul and new speech to introduce the Sega series to the platform. Crazed mix of steam powered mech strategy battles and delicate as a cherry blossom romance.
Mega Drive
Platform
With colourful, cute and cuddly graphics Wonder Boy looks a real treat and plays like one too with light action RPG moments as you collect crucial items, top up at the local store and add to your heart count. Just watch out for grumpy mushrooms, friendly faries and bug eyed rabbits. Also Known as WonderBoy in Monster World.
Mega Drive
RPG
The final slice of Shining Force on the 16 bit platform that left fans awaiting the 32 bit sequels with real anticipation. Graphically squeezes the Mega Drive for all its got and the results are pretty amazing. Its easy to see why many miss the innocence of the 16 bit sprite worlds looking at this. Imaginative, engrossing, enthralling, engaging: enjoy.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Rumoured to be an exploration into the possibility of doing VF 3 on the Saturn, J-Pop music video editor for fans of the top selling artist. Involvement of the legendary AM2 on the project.
Dreamcast
Sports
Baseball management sim to sort out your team from the corn dogs to the popcorn.
PSP
Rhythm
Rhythm action with catchy, bubbly tunes and the star of the show Miku who seems to have a huge wardrobe of outfits, including bridal gowns for the fanboys. Presentation is superb and the graphical and aural standard shows just how huge Miku is in Japan. And with a bit of hand eye coordination, players too can be big in Japan.
PSP
Rhythm
Update of the rhythm action with catchy, bubbly tunes and the star of the show Miku who seems to have a huge wardrobe of outfits for the fanboys. Presentation is superb and the graphical and aural standard shows just how huge Miku is in Japan. And with a bit of hand eye coordination, players too can be big in Japan.
PS2
Action
The spiritual successor to Shenmue started here amongst the flotsam on the streets of Tokyo. The neon looks the same, but there is a gritty side to the streets and our hero is never too far from getting his tattoos out and more than a generous amount of fisticuffs.
PSP
RPG
Released on the tenth anniversary of the original PSO, the graphical standard and the speed at which lay revolves must be applauded. Yet the bare bones of the game are very much the Dreamcast version which caused such a stir in the gaming community when the servers were online. Co-operative play is possible along with other, less friendly multi-player opportunities.
Dreamcast
Sports
The ultimate in gaming fantasy escape – a British major title is possible with the appearance of Tim Henman in this slick tennis sim. Reveals its arcade roots in its simplicity to pick up but with a fiendish difficultly gradient after the opening rounds. The finest realistic tennis game. Brilliant with four players.
Mega Drive
Sports
Instantly recognisable due to using commentators to add that extra bit of Super Bowl razzmatazz to the presentation. Plenty of different moves to select for the offence mainly variations on the theme of short pass, long pass, battling through the middle or nipping round the outside. Became a real MD classic, especially in North America.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Search the spooky mansion for the evil spirit. With plenty of ghouls to meet along the way. Gameplay involves drifting around the spooky mansion with its high ceilings trying to discover the grim secret behind the death of the Mansion’s owner. Yet as in most Japanese spooky stories there is a twist in the tale. Also known as Shinsetsu Yume Miyakata.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
All the lavishly extravagant characters that make up Hanagumi in Sakura Wars spice up the well loved Columns formula. Really comes into its own in two player. Its lasting popularity ensured a sequel on the Dreamcast.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Super Deformed versions of Lau, Wolf, Pai et al in a light hearted take on the VF series.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Showcasing all that is popular in these sim games: love interest, beautiful graphics and of course a few fights along the way. The new gaming feature the original introduced was the use of trust points awarded or deducted as a result of interactions with other characters that effect the overall endings. A huge Sega title for the discerning otaku.
Mega Drive
Shooter
On the rails shooter where the screen scrolls along as Duke shoots into it like in the Neo Geo classic Nam 75 and I suppose Operation Wolf. Masses of enemy attacks keep the action frantic and frenzied as your Uzi is in near danger of seizing up. A real blast from an arcade expert.
Mega CD
A Bit Special
Sega’s humour may not be to all tastes, but this release proved successful enough to warrant a PS2 remake. Known as Panic in the West.
Sega Hardware
Console
A delightful machine full of the love that Sega always gave to all its consoles and with plenty of madcap peripherals that may have lead to its downfall as a hardware producer. From an era of innocent gaming comes a delightfully simple console.
Mega Drive
Gamecube
Sports
The solid Virtua Striker engine refined with added management options. Where as the passing system isn’t perfect, this arcade classic still can set the heart a flutter with some very special goals. The first to introduce a very clever crossing system and the potential for wing wizardry.
Gamecube
Action
More monkey mayhem as players take a spin inside the Monkey Balls and roll through the levels collecting bananas. A feel for momentum must be attained to avoid dropping off levels, but the ball physics are well designed making it always, alas, the players fault for taking a tumble or making a simian slip. Full of Sega’s colourful charm.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Rather off kilter adventure with plenty of FMV sequences as you solve puzzles and gain necessary items such as oil for a rusty door to progress. Its not until the second disk that things start going a bit astray though. Impressive attention to the graphics from Sega. Known in the West as Lunacy. Full title ‘Gekka Mugentan Torico.’
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Battle mech against mech through various arenas as Sega’s in house programmers work wizardry using the Saturns 2D and 3D architecture. Not quite arcade perfect, but pushes the Saturn to the limits without going to far and causing slowdown.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Plenty of samples, demos and information to showcase the Saturns merits and releases with Series of Dreams, Telecom Town and the Sega Saturn Masterpiece Collection vying for the dedicated Saturn fans attention.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Well crafted kick around with four player mode a scream, although as such unlikely to be contributing much to the Respect campaign. Utilises world teams and the game engine has a good balance of arcadey feel with varied goal scoring.
Sega Hardware
Cable
For the Dreamcast collector who wants it all: the individually sold modem cable in its original Dreamcast branded box. Alas memories are all that is left of the days when Phantasy Star Online and a fresh faced innocent bunch of online gamers hit it off.
Mega Drive
Simulation
A Sega strategy title that allows you to choose you characters for your team and then use superior tactics to defeat your rivals.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A feisty demo disk with playable samples of Cool Boarders Burrrn, Shutoko Battle, Sonic Adventure International, Soul Calibur and Chu Chu Rocket. Also featured are movie demos of Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Dream Flyer, Virtua Striker 2 and Seaman.
Dreamcast
One on One Beat Em Up
Superb fighting series and worthy follow up which was never going to be as great a leap forward as between the first and second installments.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Based on the anime this RPG utilises the license to good effect by having fully animated battle scenes. The overall look of the game is more nostalgic with nicely detailed sprites. Warrants the yellow label warning.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Set in a spooky, abandoned school; your task is to save the children who have wandered in there from the kancho monster (if Genki’s Japanese is up to scratch!) Goes full circle with the FMV being so badly acted it becomes funny.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Light hearted puzzle and quiz title which excels in multiplayer especially with a multitap. Varied action keeps things fresh and ticking along very nicely.
Miscellaneous Games
Shoot Em Up
The arcade classic R-Type gets a miraculous handheld conversion. The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
32X
Action
The Metal Head is a giant mech requiring piloting around the cityscapes taking down enemy targets and accidentally blasting chunks out of surrounding skyscrapers. All very impressively realised in textured polygons showing the prowess of the 32X in the right hands.
Mega Drive
RPG
More mysterious inter galactic goings on with epic battles supplemented by some useful items to collect. A superb series with plenty of devotees.
Dreamcast
Sports
From the Virtua school of wrestling comes this well executed special with tag options and plenty of wrestlers to choose from. The presentation is smooth with plenty of flashbulbs going off as the wrestlers ham it up as they head for the ring. Grappling is never dull with the array of specials on offer.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Features a real mull of games including a razor sponsored breakout clone, a puzzle game and an adventure entitled Big Brother, adverts for Japanese products, interviews of the Virtua Fighter team and most interestingly of all a digital comic version of Virtua Fighter…
PS3
Action
Tattooed veterans of the series will know what to expect from this instalment: explosions, briefcases of Yen, scarred faces and tattooed torsos and plenty of fisticuffs. Add into the mull a beautiful J Pop star, ramen shops and baseball and I think its fair to say it covers all bases and in fine fettle.
Sega Saturn
RPG
The final installment on the Saturn and its a shame such slick design was restricted to a Japanese-only release with the entire engine having been delicately tweaked into this masterpiece by Sega’s finest craftsmen.
Sega Hardware
Controller
The best way to get the party started with these official maracas for use with the Samba De Amigo series. Its no slur on Sega though to say sometimes its more fun to watch the participant rather than the on screen action. Quite hard to track down these days.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Well crafted kick around with four player mode a scream, although as such unlikely to be contributing much to the Respect campaign. Utilises J-League teams and the game engine has a good balance of arcade feel with varied goal scoring.
Dreamcast
Simulation
The first instalment of the epic Sakura Taisen marched onto the Dreamcast demanding attention of all with its very slick 3D battle scenes. This exquisite special pack comes with a Dreamcast VMU in a very tidy wooden finish showing the attention to detail Sega gave to its beloved Dreamcast.
Miscellaneous Games
Shooter
Splendid conversion of the nausea inducing arcade monolith, unfortunately without giant hydraulic cockpit, but all the rest is very well represented. Old school mechanics and high tension, adrenalin fuelled action from a golden era of the coin op when Sega ruled supreme.
Mega Drive
Platform
Whilst the gameplay is not too cerebral, the fluid animation must rank as some of Disney’s finest in a video game and rivals that of Prince of Persia. A real joy to behold as Aladdin uses his sword and a limited supply of apples to glide through the imaginative, well realised scenarios including the market, desert and castle.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Luscious anime adventure mixing love and war. Ogami return’s from the Imperial Navy to lead Hanagumi and their steam powered contraptions. (Very) Big in Japan.
Dreamcast
Dreamcast
Sports
Where as the passing system isn’t perfect, this arcade classic still can set the heart a flutter with some very special goals. The first to introduce a very clever crossing system and the potential for wing wizardry.
Dreamcast
Action
Eye catching arcade whizz converted with style and panache to the Dreamcast maintaining the dark, tragic, Gothic feel of the arcade big brother. Requires a steady nerve and fast trigger finger. A real blast in two player.
Mega Drive
Sports
Whilst not always obeying the laws of physics, Super Monaco 2 has some fine circuits to hone the drivers handling skills, even if its firmly arcade in its approach. Includes the Senna GP with tracks designed by the great driver himself alongside the World GP with its mighty challenge to make sure its you spraying the champagne, not down in the pits.
Mega CD
A Bit Special
Four games on one CD: Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, The Revenge of Shinobi and Columns. Actually the Japanese release of the Western pack in disk that came bundled with the Mega CD. The code has been optimised though on Streets of Rage removing the crippling slowdown of the Western version.
Mega Drive
Action
The title refers to the services of a super hero who can be hired to grapple against Godzilla and Mothra look a likes wherever they may be causing havoc in this gaming equivalent of a B movie. Also has some RPG elements in the setting up of battles between our super hero and the varing kaiju. Except to be truthful our man hasn’t quite obtained super hero nirvana: he is just doing these odd jobs to pay for his lycra suit such as opening a bank account. Followed up on the Dreamcast and Xbox.
Playstation
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, referring to the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler. Highly accomplished version which was re-released to introduce its polished gameplay to the PS2 crew.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collectors item for fans of VF: watch Jacky about town in his sports car, hussling the pool hall or prancing around with his Dalmatian! Owners of five or more of the series were rewarded with a special Dual disk.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Get further involved in the Virtua Fighter series as gamers get to meet Akira more in his familiar surrounds practising kung fu. Lots of footage make this a very tidy addition to the GG collection.
Dreamcast
Sports
Solid grid iron representation with Sega Sports matching the high presentation standards matching that of EAs sprawling empire and capturing the key moments of the sport perfectly. Plenty of cheer leaders for sport as slick as this and playable to non fans of the sports, just as EAs Ice Hockey back in the day.
Miscellaneous Games
Action
Arcade level graphical achievements and gameplay to match as the players penguin pecks platforms to negotiate a safe passage for the egg through the screens laden with traps and adversaries. A real gem in Sega’s crown that shows why it enjoyed the fine times ahead.
