The Saga series has a fine, thoroughbred history and the initial Super Famicom instalment sets the tone wonderfully for the development of the open worlds the series encompasses with its refreshing optional tasks. Depending on which tasks a player pursues will go to determining a good or evil end quest with the final boss in waiting. Overall the control given to choose your own destiny gives this an edge over the mass of fine SFC RPGs available.

Simple commands to attack, block, run or use an item but when he story is so skilfully woven it stands as a tapestry in RPG design. The airship allows players to take to the skies opening up the gaming universe allowing greater freedom without the trekking.

Fantasy themed scrolling shooter of the Gauntlet ilk that allows you to play each level as a different character: from Knight to ogre, thief and Wizard. Gameplay is old school and unforgiving, but you wouldn’t have it any other way. Ahead of its time in that the environments can be destroyed too revealing some welcomed power ups that have pleasing graphical effects when utilised.

Charge into the screen Space Harrier style, but this is a platform style escapade and the player must avoid gates and space critters on the planets surface. The 3D effect is impressive and quick reflexes are needed to keep up with the rapid pacing. The Sequel to Tobidase Daisakusen.

Pixel perfect Square graphics as it matches its own sprawling epic Final Fantasy with immense graphical attention to detail and imaginative boss battles plus plenty of side quests against wonderfully realised monsters. Sheer clash.

A game a few decades ahead of its time as the hero charges head on into the 3D scrolling screen giving adversaries a wide berth and making long jumps that would put Chris Tomlinson to shame. The end of level boss requires a bit of the old school shooting skills to be tested as Square defines another genre early in its development. Known in the West as 3D WorldRunner.

Set in real life modern day Japan, you must guide accident victim Hitomi, not playing as her, but as the voice in her head. Its important to not lead her astray or she’ll stop listening to you. Beautifully realised in FMV, Square once again comes up trumps whilst changing the rules of the game.

With a stirring Uematsu soundtrack to back up this close attachment conjures up an RPG of delightfully magical proportions. Tragically never released in the West, Square once again thinks outside the box of your paint by numbers RPG to deliver the stunning Romancing Saga 2.

Designed with players of their first ever RPG in mind, Square included a guide to the adventure along with the game featuring easier modes. Very collectable box art with this Japanese release, especially as the series has gone on to grow in popularity. Although it could be argued the series never attained as many HP as it did in the Super Famicom glory days. The innocence of the sprite graphics pulls on the heart strings during the masterfully crafted story’s execution. Known as Final Fantasy II in the West as parts two and three hadn’t received an English language translation. The American version was censored for some reason.
