The feudal Japan setting in the winter months makes the visual pyrotechnics stand out as players soon discover you are no ordinary samurai. Koei is a real master of such action titles and Genki kowtows to a fine developer. Known as Warriors Orochi in the West.

Sweepingly huge arenas as Koei invigorates the fight fest by making battles projectile based. Players never go split screen like DragonBall Z however: they are always on the same screen. Innovative and well executed.

Nobunaga was an iron fisted shogun known by the famous haiku ‘If the bird doesn’t sing, kill it!’ This is a strategy war based game involving seizing control of ancient Japan.

Koei has done a fabulous job in miniaturising its Chinese Warring Period Sangoku series to the smaller screen with the smooth, silky interface working a treat in this fantasy RPG. The chip tunes are cheery and the pixelized characters are easy to get attached to, such is their fine design.

This Japan exclusive version of the warring kingdoms embarks on a sweeping crusade to build up the biggest army in ancient China through conquering all others. Some epic battles all very nicely realised and true to the period costumes and weaponry, with some nice effects. Known as Romancing of the Three Kingdoms VI in the West. Raise the torch and burn the sky.

Captures the heat of being involved in a huge battle with the player fulfilling vital missions utilising a spear in the true martial tradition. Atmospheric lighting as laterns burn brightly to illuminate the enemy hideout. Perfecting the ability to sweep away the army of ten thousand is a must.

Angelique has the uncommon power to be able to purify monsters, yet she wishes to pursue the career of her father in becoming a doctor. However when hr school is attacked she is forced to use her powers and a shift occurs in her destiny. Lavishly illustrated and acted.

Thanks to clever snow and fogging effects, it really does feel that you are in the midst of an epic battle with quick combos required to avoid getting swamped in a mass of foot soldiers. Lavish costumes and triple A acting are evidence Koei has really gone to town once again on its silky dynasty.

Ancient China never looked so good as Koei not only takes advantage of the beautiful setting, but also uses the artistic license provided by rich mythology as players fend off tigers and use a giant mushroom to sweep away the armies of ten thousand. The lighting effects and sheer amount of on screen action truly boggle.

Immortalised by the line ‘You are already dead’ and Kenshiro’s lightning fast attacks, the post-apocalyptic world of North Star was one of the first animes released in the West. Think of a cartoon Mad Max where you meet adversaries and more often than not, their heads explode. Koei gets nasty and heads roll with their multi character mechanics working a treat in a top, top license.

Few games capture the heat and sheer scale of the battlefield like the Koei series of Dynasty Wars and its off shoots. Strategists will relish the planning and formulate there pincer movements to ensnare the opposition, but leaping from your horse and laying waste to the enemy hordes (easily identified in their plain uniforms and lack of elaborate facial hair) brings great satisfaction.

Hard to resist a ninja themed game as our wee man dressed in black avoids advancing bamboo forests and delves deep to find out how his ninja clan can survive the onslaught of Nobunaga. Some great chip tunes to set the period and some spiffing techniques to be able to use on opponents.

Looking like a tribute to the mighty Jet Set Radio is a compliment indeed with super fly, fresh, cel shaded graphics full of garish colours and free form surrounds to skate or die for. Comes with a finger board attachment for the Dual Shock to make the skate moves players pull off all the more sweetly rewarding. A quirky skate title that stand out from the crowd and Koei should be applauded for that. Also known as Yanya Caballista City Skater.

Koei has made it’s war chest trading historical battle games based on ancient Chinese history. The nation has been divided into three kingdoms. You must unite the country or be destroyed by the prevailing anarchy. Also known as Sangokushi Eiketsuden.

Poor, rotund Opoona has been split up from his folks and the aim of this unusual quest is to get back the happy family. Various skills are obtained through hard work such as a detective or pop star and the varied nature of the quests ensures gameplay is always fresh. Add to the mix the graphical skills of Dragon Quest developers and a twist of the aural pleasure from the Final Fantasy series and the results are a fine release from the Koei stable.

Trial version in which players transform into the uber funky Giatroo Man by picking up an electric guitar and strum some riffs to dispatch of your adversaries in a unique twist on the rhythm action genre. Get in the groove and react in sync and the music plays along more smoothly. As exquisitely colourful as a trip to Shibuya and full of Eastern insanity making this a must have purchase.

Introducing items to the mix along with the all defining strategic importance of a strong naval fleet to prevent enemy supplies from getting through. Unify China for the glory of heaven and earth. Known in the West as the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Hack and slash through hordes of mechas as the stirring Gundam soundtrack once again kicks in. Excellent use of lighting adding to the marvel of the meticulous special moves that are applied to the cannon fodder. Use of the head up display brings in plenty of conversations with the series protagonists adding infinitely to the atmosphere with there ‘Battle of the Planet’ retro-style avatars and reminiscent of the seminal Cybernator on the SFC. Of course its possible to transform into a ship to banish a batch of mecha foot soldiers to vehicle Valhalla.
