Simulation
Plays similar to Nectaris in that it’s a militaristic strategy title that’s quite easy to get into thanks to the almost Nintendo-esque way Masaya lead the player by the hand through the early stages. Yet once the simple control face is mastered the adventure really opens up. The Gaiserds of the title are the mecha robots of varying strengths and abilities that are placed throughout the space stages. When a ruck kicks off the animated sequences are very impressive for a HU based title.

Shoot Em Up
Roughly translating as ‘Super Big Brother’, this is the closest you get to the Village People on a console! Highly imaginative, very wacky digitised graphics to the point where you’ll wonder if shiitake are the only mushrooms the creators have been having in their miso soup. Drifts away from the shooting action of its predecessors for a one on one fist fest taking place in mid air – reassuringly with female characters too. Although the fart attacks are no way to treat a lady.

Bishonen anime inspired action, the first in the series to have 3D graphics. Multiple endings are also possible.

One on One Beat Em Up
As interesting as a game as a cultural study having been given a makeover to Street Combat for the Western audience. The subtle martial artists were transformed into robots and rejects from an Arnie movie. But the original has plenty going for fans of fight titles with a Japanese slice of lime of the side with an unusual control system with the buttons being used for jumping and blocking and all the wacky manga characters.

Absolute gem for fans of Takahashi’s gender bending Ranma. Digital comic style gameplay captures the essence of the very humourous series with some very bizarre goings on.

Three basic style: park, city or factory levels to be negotiated at day or night with a sword that powers up to release fireballs to help to defeat the robot or dragon boss. Reassuringly familiar gameplay for those who feel like there’s a disturbance in the force with today’s mass market fodder.

The Battletoad games are very collectable and its easy to see why in this Rare crafted version. Cliched some of the locations may be, but when the execution is of such high standard its easy to see why they become much imitated and rarely bettered. Fun, wholesome action that squeezes every iota out of the hardware.

Super Deformed style motorcycle game which outs the SFC through its Mode 7 paces. The screen is split to use a rear view from the top screen so players can prevent getting overtaken.

Simulation
Takes a turn based strategic approach to mecha warfare (similar to Front Mission) as opposed to the previous clunky metal shoot ’em ups. Keep an eye on your soldiers for signs of overheating and short circuiting through the cockpit view. Well animated and pretty presentation of the intercom conversations and cut scenes.

Overhead perspective racing game where competitors jostle for position. Get left too far behind and rather than scroll out you get bumped up to the pace automatically. However too many bump ups and you have to retire. Slick presentation and prize money to buy upgrades, but multiplayer is where its really at.

Side scrolling shooter from old hands Masaya taking you on a journey through dense jungle and Egyptian inspired artefacts with only a very hand multi directional gun for company. The multi directional shooting capabilities are very useful on latter stages as Masaya ensures you fully appreciate its versatility and it adds much to the shmup formula. Worthy of a place in the Mega Drive shooter hall of fame.

A sprawling series in terms of man hours, but the plot keeps it all closely knit in the fantasy RPG and battle sim stylie.

Absolutely crazy fighter with some of the maddest moves in manga martial mayhem the video gaming world has seen. An absolute must for fans of Rumiko Takahashi san’s gender bender and well worth a look for those after something graphically different to the usual Street Fighter II clone. Genki is a fan of the father transformation who turns into a panda and can only communicate with signs.

Excellent cinematics make this a must for fans of Takahashi’s mad Ranma universe. All the favourite characters are present with their unusual, incredibly wacky special moves. Starts off innocently enough at the local public bath before mayhem breaks out battling a bath stool tossing Jiisan, then its off to the gym to take on sempai’s sister in a gymnastic martial fest. All nicely interspersed with animated sequences. Just steer clear of gambling with the King of Hearts who pops up – he knows the cards too well.
