PC Engine Super CD ROM
Shoot Em Up
Hudson have performed a commendable job of converting the Seibu Kaihatsu sprite shooter adding in the CD quality soundtrack over the standard Hu Card release. Only those most grizzled gaming vets need apply – especially if you can keep your eyes on two different areas of the screen at once and have a steady trigger finger when it comes to the surface bombs. (Apologies for the poor cover images – the reflective cover doesn’t scan well.)
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Shoot Em Up
Play as pilot of the Hunting Dog assisted by power ups from the Wild Cat in the shape of pods to help protect your ship. Heavy metal soundtrack, but no time for head banging apart from against the monitor as relentless waves swarm in to attack. Similar to the MD’s Thunderforce and prequel to Winds of Thunder. Some very tidy rotation and parallax effects as Hudson demonstrates its perfect grasp of the Engine architecture with backgrounds that close in on you inducing claustrophobia.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
Distinctive appeal of the graphics with a wondrously realised game world and a stirring orchestral score make this one of the all time classic RPG’s. Time and effort has been put into the story boards to making for an introduction that sets the scene perfectly. A massive title in Japan on its release.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
PC Kid’s giant head comes in handy to deliver cranium crushing Glasgow kisses to enemies that come at you surfing, fishing, even catching insects. Full of fresh ideas. Also known as ‘Genjin’ or ‘Bonk 2’ or perhaps even ‘Bonk’s Revenge’.’
PC Engine HU Card
A Bit Special
Tongue in cheek take on the Momo Tarou of Japanese folklore. The name refers to the train element of the game (‘den’ from train and ‘tetsu’ from iron) rather than the usual densetsu (‘legend’.)
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
Zany platformer with the stars of a Japanese variety show Kato Cha and Ken Shimura. Bizarre goings generally centre around toliets: birds drop ‘unchi’ from the sky, the pair can fart to dispatch enemies – even energy power ups come shaped as toilets. Interestingly, the American version had the fart attack removed proving toilet humour may not be universal after all.
PC Engine HU Card
Action
Absolute classic gameplay assures Bomber Man a place in the gaming hall of fame. Simple graphics suit the fast pace perfectly as later 3D attempts remonstrated. Multiplayer is where this comes into its own.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Giger inspired blaster needing no introduction. A must have for any shooter fans. Many a joypad has suffered under the extreme pressure of R-Type Bydo’s bosses! Levels 5-8 of the arcade mammoth.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
First in the long running Power League baseball series from big hitting Hudson Soft.
PC Engine HU Card
Action
Absolute classic gameplay assures Bomber Man a place in the gaming hall of fame. Simple graphics suit the fast pace perfectly as later 3D attempts remonstrated. Multiplayer is where this comes into its own and the 93 version is well designed for five player frolics.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Very enjoyable and popular war sim in a futuristic style with hex based on screen representation of your army nicely presented. Best savoured in two player where the battle to take down an opponents base can get quite heated.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
A step back to feudal times and a golden gaming era when RPGs were a soothing combination of exploring the village to simple chip tunes before more sinister encounters with combat requiring experience points.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
PC Kid is to the Engine what Sonic and Mario are to Sega and Nintendo. But Genki reckons he could have them both in a fight using his forehead to attack enemies as he does. Fun filled platform romp with original twists in an often cliched genre. Also known as ‘Genjin’ and ‘Bonk’.
PC Engine Arcade CD
One on One Beat Em Up
Conversion of the massive Neo Geo title from the 2D fighting grandmaster SNK. Some wonderful playable characters to choose from including the superbly named Korean Taekwondo expert KimKap Hwan and wide girthed Chinese gent Cheng Sinzan.
Sega Saturn
RPG
An alternate evil world existing alongside our own is the setting for this evil adventure from Hudson Soft. Crammed on to two disks.
Super Famicom
Platform
Imaginative bosses and use of the console’s splendid palette make Super PC Kid a very colourful game. Transformation are in there as in the seminal PC Engine versions: this time PC Kid can change into an ostrich, a crab or a dragon. Putting the fun and blue skies back in gaming. Also known as Super Bonk.
Super Famicom
RPG
Capturing the essence of the golden 16Bit era of Super Famicom platformers with the shrunk down character sprites and expansive gaming world realised in intensive detail in the dark caves and vibrant towns. The effort put into production adds to the feel of a real gem twinking like one of the treasures in the cavernous underground labyrinths.
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
The arcade classic R-Type gets the near perfect home conversion (albeit of only the first four levels…) The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
PC Engine Hardware
Accessory
Has 8k of memory on this card allowing you to save your games even when the internal console memory of the CD system is full. Indeed a calling from heaven as the name translates…
PC Engine HU Card
RPG
Comedy adventure involving top spy ‘Sadakichi Seven’ trying to capture the Natto (fermented beans) organisation.
Virtual Boy
Shoot Em Up
Assume control of the Rangnarok ship in the battle to regain control of a rogue space colony. 2D vertically scrolling blast fest given a 3D element by the ability to shift between different planes. Relatively short, but the usual shields, weapon and pod power ups and detailed backgrounds make this a blast worthy of the Hudson Soft brand.
Super Famicom
Action
Something about Bomberman just seemed to click on the Super Famicom and it fits the format like a Tokyo cab drivers white gloves. Perhaps it was the relatives limitations of the format that permitted Hudson to develop the series, rather than to try and invent the Bomberman genre as found on later platforms. Happy days.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Weighing in as one of the heavyweight Engine titles: relentless waves of enemy assaults soon induce sweaty palm syndrome on even the most hardened and grizzled gaming vet. Famed in its heyday for sampled speech.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
The plot weaves further on bringing together some intriguing strands. Yet the all important golden gameplay thread has been drastically altered for this release making it a side scrolling platformer. Doesn’t quite live up to Y’s I & II yet wth such high expectations it was always going to be tricky. Thankfully the spine tingling score of the original strides boldly on undeterred.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
As the first in the series on the Engine, this hasn’t aged quite as well as Final Soldier and Soldier Blade, but its nippy gameplay has withstood the test of time. Eight intense levels as you fly over a giant spaceship not knowing where the next attack will be launched from. One hit takes out your upgradable weapon, the next – destruction. Has two and five minute score challenge modes for those who wished to brush up their skills for the gaming equivalent of Woodstock – the Caravan contest. Updated to the PSP, but that brain boss keeps haunting us.
PC Engine Hardware
Accessory
Plug in the original PC Engine to allow data to be saved to its back-up facility or the Core Grafx or Core Grafx II. Very retro chic and revolutionary at the time.
Virtual Boy
Puzzle
Join Bomberman’s quest to make the golden Bomberman statue his own by winning the three medals. All of the enemies and levels are of a spooky nature, but in a cuddly Bomberman style. Gameplay is in a similar vein to Columns.
Famicom Cart
Action
Absolute classic gameplay assures Bomber Man a place in the gaming hall of fame. Simple graphics suit the fast pace perfectly as later 3D attempts remonstrated. Multiplayer is where this comes into its own.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Forced scrolling pre-historic shooting action with all manner of attacks awaiting including throwing stars and more dinosaurs than you could shake a stick at. The Famicom takes it all admirably in its stride despite the plethora of on-screen action Known in Japan as Shin Jinrui.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Shoot Em Up
CD based sequel to the HU Card based Air Zonk with crazy power ups turning you into various guises including a sushi chef firing out all manner of sushi rolls. Packed with humour: one sublime moment among many sees an alarmed looking fish being persued by a guy wielding a sashimi sign in the obligatory underwater level. The dodgy rockabilly style intro song is just about eclipsed by the enka (traditional Japanese) style continue song – sang as Denjin trudges brow beaten along a winding road.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Classic old school shooter from the kings of the Famicom era Hudson that ruled the roost with fast paced, arcade shooting action, to paraphrase from the era. Superb box art and good, wholesome gameplay.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Highly collectable original Famicom version. The graphical limitations made programmers work hard on gameplay where Star Soldier excels. The robotic brain pays a visit at the end of level mutating into a bigger, badder boss as you progress. The whole epic series started here.
Super Famicom
Sports
Nice arcade flow to the play with nice crowd effects and over the top celebrations to goals, including replays which were quite unheard of at the time.
PC Engine HU Card
One on One Beat Em Up
In the immortal words of Master Onion: “Kick, punch – its all in the mind.” Some huge pugalists match up in this traditional kung fu fest. One of the earliest Engine games released at the same time as the PC Engine.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
RPG
Returns to the classic RPG gameplay of the first title Ys I&II in triumphant style with wondrous soundtrack as the story once again gets its hooks into you and draws you into its fantasy world quite willingly.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
Platform action in both village and mountainous regions where you can interact Goemon style with the shopkeepers. Zany mix of robot transformation and the Japanese countryside. Inexplicably known as Keith Courage in the West.
Super Famicom
Platform
Subtitled ‘Takahashi Meijin’. Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberry and skateboarding cliched brilliance.
Super Famicom
Action
Fine use of the SFC’s palette and some n ice extras such as being able to ride kangaroos in order to zip around planting tactical bombs a little bit quicker. The tweaks never dominate a fine game that never needed fixing and add to the fun factor.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Reminiscent of ‘Big Run’ on the Super Famicom in that both were the first driving games released for their respective systems and both cover the Paris – Dakkar Rally. Complete with Eiffel Tower sprite of course!
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
Also known as Peachboy, Momotaro can explore villages Goemon style in this multiple ending platformer featuring an obligatory ice level aswell as more cultural aspects of the Momotaro Legend. Though Genki struggles to recall the bit about the lollipop wielding octopus devil!
Super Famicom

GameBoy Original
Action
Bomberman style action where players use carefully placed bombs to take down opponents and clear the stage. Care must be taken to not back yourself into a corner with a ticking bomb for company. The levels become more and more devious as progress is made, but never unfair. Known as Atomic Punk in America and Dynablaster in Europe.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Nice version of the popular table game set during the warring period in Japan and with banter to match from the various combatants set in the speech style of the era. Win the different prefectures area by area. In the retro gaming speak of old: have you got what it takes to rule over all Japan?
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Bullfrog’s seminal god sim made it hard to resist improper gameplay such as sending in the odd earthquake to wake up your people. Made extra popular and collectable on the Engine by being one of the few titles to include a battery back up on the HU Card.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
A realistic approach to the sport with real stadiums such as Saitama and Yokohama as well as classically named teams such as ‘Straws’, ‘Fibers’ and ‘Wholes’. Nice home run sequence.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Side scrolling football game (or soccer to avoid confusion.) Nice newscaster style presentation and all the elements of a fun, early 90’s arcade kick about. No Champions League winner, but a definite UEFA Cup place contender.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Build your own monster mech to battle it out in the arena against rival pilots such as the classically named ‘Bad Boy’. “Robot Wars” has nothing on this!
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG

Famicom Cart

Milon dons his night cap and blows a few bubbles at enemies as he scales up the castles platforms. Secret doors and breaking walls can reveal hidden routes and surprises. Good, solid platforming fun. Apart from the crumbling ones… Known in Japan as ‘Meikyuu Kumikyoku Miron no Daibouken.’
Famicom Cart
RPG
The graphics are colourful and the roots are firmly in the old school with limited health to bring out the very best in gamers. The shops add a great incentive to risk all to grab that extra power up.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
RPG
Classic RPG action in the Falcom mould. Allows you to avoid multiple HP battles if you so desire. Some pretty cool townsfolk to chat with make this one of the better action RPG’s on the Engine amongst some stiff competition.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
A varient on the Puyo Puyo theme with different coloured bomberman helmets requiring alignment before the obligatory boom. Four player matches are a blast as the screen accomodates all players at once.
Super Famicom
Platform
Attains the Capcom level of polish as if Walt himself had been watching over the production. The imagination into the graphical effects sets the atmospheric powder keg off a treat such as with the lashing rain. And our beloved beast is a versatile creature ensuring the player soon warms to his dexterous manoeuvres.
