Some towering bosses dwarfing your character with a Buddhist flavour add much to the moody Eastern atmosphere.

Played with classic Japanese game humour as you charge around with your oversized head armed with an upgradable mallet – so what explained by your carpenter occupation. Also features a level where you drive through the town on a moped which is a real scream. Also known as Hammerin Harry.

A take on the mighty Contra licence this time with mech style power suits and massive adversaries to test the mode 7 to the limits. Tough like Konami’s opus with one hit kills, yet some supreme weaponry soon gets players in the necessary gung-ho spirits. A few tactically placed vehicles also helps – its always a joy to tear through enemy lines in motorised marauding machine. As does the two player mode with a bit of teamwork.

Packages up two of the most iconic shooters with the embryonic end boss in R Type and R Type II. Needless to say both look a treat on the Playstation and their old school mechanics are still present, yet soon command the respect of their students.

Very tough conversion of the arcade vertically scrolling shooter recommended only to grizzled gaming veterans with hardened skin on their thumbs! Beautiful organic backgrounds and well atoned chip tunes to the on-screen tension which is cranked high during the imaginative boss battles.

Lovely, old school platformer which has some very vibrant colours and scaling making for plenty of on screen action. The gaming is varied too with much thought and planning appearing to have gone into level design. Well recommended.

Shoot Em Up
Final finale for Irem’s vintage R-Type series with its distinctive projectile orb that can project the ship or be fired out to get amongst the enemy drone waves. The colour coded power ups are intact as is the tough nut challenge even with a fleet of nippy vessels to unlock and pick from. Keeping to its 2D principles the action twists and turns viciously at times to keep you firmly hovering over the fire button with such devious variations in scroll direction. Graphically gorgeous and a fitting tribute.

Japan exclusive, four wheel drive action racer with smaller cars to allow plenty of on screen action. Feels like the inspiration behind Micro machines, but don’t let Codemasters hear that. Its necessary to bash opponent vehicles off the screen and quite satisfying to do so. Especially when tuned up with a raging power up on the go.

Fast and frantic shooting action as the submarine drops bombs and launches torpedoes to try and keep on top of things. The speed the Famicom shifts the non screen action around impresses and the sprite based simplicity keeps the gameplay uncluttered and adds a visual charm. Plus the distinctive underwater locales keep this feeling as fresh as the school of angler fish awaiting.

Motorbike racing game with two player spilt screen challenges possible. Some well designed courses to choose from including Irem Osaka, Fuji, and the legendary Suzuka. You don’t just choose your racer but a whole team including mechanic and ‘campaign girl’ whose role has yet to be clarified. Known in Japan as Racing Damashii.

Irem takes In the Hunt into the deep sea – a realm seldom used in gaming and the submarine shooting action drips atmosphere with the ping of radar detecting enemy presence. Its not all guns blazing: missions are varied, but the feel of the propulsion of the submarine and the sea setting work a treat.

Cracking Irem platform fun in their tie honoured tradition that sees our hero utilise his punk mohican hairstyle well in detaching it to use like a shuriken when the appropriate spray power up has been located. Bounding between cars as bald headed bad guys fire off volleys on machine guns in this pure, platform frolic.

Conversion of the arcade monolith based on part two with an extra intro level. Tough and unforgiving, but the true shmup fan wouldn’t have it any other way. Never has Genki been so grateful for slowdown to get out of the many tight fixes that must come with trying to contain the expansion of the Bydo Empire in R-Type.

Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Sharp reflexes and a knowledge of when to fire in a fist of fury or a flat kung fu slipper sole are requisites to meet the bad boss Mr X. Ducking kicks and throwing stars in the classic arcade mould. Known as Kung Fu Master in the West.

Action
A lack of shadowing does make avoiding some of the hazards across the castle a bit haphazard for our young samurai. But the levels are well set out and Irem have designed an impressive set of depth to this action based title. Known in the West as Deadly Towers.
