Mega Drive
Platform
Popular platform shooting that oozes atmosphere with heavy, leaden skies making up the parallax scrolling. The sprite world is full of rich imagination and the artists were in inspired form with the fantasy bosses and baddies. Known as Risky Woods in the West.
PS2
Action
A very under-rated third person shooter that works a real treat with the fine balance struck between graphical pizazz and frame rate. The targeting system works a treat and it deserves a second look for those missing it first time round.
Miscellaneous Games
Sports
Digitised graphics that stunned as much as a sacked Quarterback along with the back up of Maddens smooth commentary giving the all mighty package to this all American sport.
Playstation
Simulation
Minecraft before its time as RPG fans create their own dungeon based role playing game complete with shops and the obligatory monsters.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Tank game which has a quick frame rate as players take out other tanks and bridges and the like with plenty of shouting in the background to induce some feelings of real combat and the chaos that ensues. Impressive stuff on a platform popularly not meant to be able to reach such heights and expected to bomb out when it comes to textured polygons.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Gets those French Fries laced with salt and watch the drink sales soar. Nothing too fried too close to the big roller coasters though as no one wants to see what their fellow park attendees have been having for lunch. Genre breaking title to treat gamers with an eye for the unusual.
Super Famicom
Action
Desert Strike caused quite a storm when released with its tight controls and excellent mission based gameplay from taking out power stations to rescuing POW, you really felt the power of the chopper to make a difference. Completing a level rewarded a mini sequence of politically charged cinematics. The final level required various briefings to be completed in the one mission and having gone through so much hard work the fear of being shot down was overwhelming.
GameBoy Original
Sports
Hawking back to the days when Arsene Wenger and Gary Lineker had their names always uttered with an honourific ‘san’ suffix comes J League Winning Eleven with a fluid engine and good use of the systems hardware to bring back the league razmatazz.
Super Famicom
Sports
Football simulator as coaches drill their players before unleashing them on the opposition to wreak havoc in the opponents box. Well thats the theory anyway. A window at the top of the screen shows the action unfurling in a similar style to Formation Soccer. The view below shows the player monitoring, just like the Opta index.
Super Famicom
Sports
Japanese version of John Madden 93 and EA pull out all the locker room tricks to bring the sport home for the first time in great realism.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Table mahjong seems to sttract a lot of bunny girls and guys in shades and this anime based board game is no exception. Draws on the source material well to keep things lively with expressive avatars and even some quiz questions on the show.
Mega Drive
Action
Tongue in cheek take on a battle game with close hand combat and much more hedged on the action side of the genre. Plays like a large sprite version of Cannon Fodder with Metal Slug like combatants on screen players steam into enemy, or at last to a safe spot on screen. Tactics are required, but the game eases one in gently until you find yourself grenade pin in teeth, machine gun in arm.
