Massive title in Japan as the driver steers a massive truck against a rival firm to be the first to deliver the consignment. The ‘Battle’ of the title comes from the dirty tricks required to cut off the rival driver to win the race. The ‘Art’ comes from the delightful designs that can be added to the truck with a few bob in your pocket complete with flashing chilli lights for the dashboard – a sign of good taste on the highways of Japan. Creative truckers can also spend some time creating their own designs. Full title: ‘Bakusou Dekotora Densetsu: Art Truck Battle.’

Update of the highly original Super Famicom title, particularly at the time being pre-Burning Rangers, but now given a post-Rangers voice feature. On similar lines to Sega’s epic: fires must be extinguished and people rescued to progress. Each level has a particularly raging fire at the end that must be tamed before clearing the level. Nice pick up and play arcade mechanics.

Suitably whiny engines and break neck speeds exploiting Mode 7 like the manufacturers make the most of their cars. Classic old school racing with the simpler pick up and play mechanics many pine for.

Takes on the mantle of the epic Fire Pro Wrestling series. Makes the somewhat tricky manoeuvres of the third instalment a little easier to execute aswell as unlocking all of the hidden wrestlers to be able to sample all the wrestlers.

Further evidence of Japanese skills in making spooky psychological software comes courtesy of Human who were busy terrifying gamers well before Capcom’s zombie onslaughts. Graphic murders involving scissors lead you to think you’re next as you point and click light puzzle elements away towards revealing the murderer’s true identity. Occasional appearances of the scissorman will put a chill down your spine and quick thinking is needed to evade his advances. A panic meter can be used if fully charged to escape temporarily however this can only be used three times before becoming exhausted. In game items can be used as weapons, but once used they can’t be restored to the gaming world so quick thinking is a must.

The cartoon style approach of the Fire series allows the developers Human to add just that: the human touch. As such the fun and comical animation of taking one where the sun don’t shine is amply represented and captures what more serious wrestle titles skip.

Known as ‘Starblazers’ in the West, this space simulation is based on the true classic, which even has its own exhibitions in Japan and its own distinct feel in an over crowded market place. Yamato is a flying naval ship and also the believed to be the essence of the Japanese spirit. The game captures the romantic overtones of the original anime.

Great very playable title from Human. Includes players such as ‘Rentoru’, ‘Bekkaa’, ‘Akashi’ and a very angry looking sprite called ‘Makenro’. Four players possible.

The tackling has to be the most satisfying element of Super Formation Soccer as plenty of effort is needed in order to get to the opponents bye line. Two options are available: the sliding tackle or the shoulder barge which may result in a foul if it has a bit too much barge in it. Great for a two player battle between two self styled midfield generals.

Small towns in idyllic situations, similar to those in How to Train Your Dragon, are under attack in a game that feels like an ancient buildings version of Sim City with a strategic battle element in dispatching forces including the fabled dragons.

Unusual puzzle title in which players control a blue orb and must make as few moves as possible in order to free up the required items from the switches and hieroglyphic characters onscreen. Very cleverly executed with an air of mystique about it.

The starting line up being displayed is a nice touch (with plenty more attention to detail in the anchor lights) and the essential speed makes the cut to appease fans of the series with little time to admire the sponsors signs, bridges or grandstand.
