Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
With only 5,000 copies of the original print rumoured to be in circulation, this is one of the rarer titles for the Mega Drive and the price in Japan of the original often reflects this. Not merely collectable for its low print run though – its the finest shooter on the Mega Drive. The heroine of the title is a witch named Cotton, on a mission to find out why all the sweets have been poisoned. But it times it may seem like Cotton has had a strong dose of dental gas, such are the colourful, almost psychedelic nature of the graphics with genre defining effects. Smashing bosses, clean, creative anime cut scenes, original ‘chase view’ perspective, yet true to its title with free movement – this title is the best example of what the Mega Drive architecture can produce. Michelangelo would surely approve. Thankfully collectors can now own it and not just watch the original with tea cup on Antiques Roadshow.
Mega Drive
Platform
Solid platform title set in a spooky forest where the lead man shoots fire from his fingers to scythe through to a cinder the evil ghouls and demons lying in wait. Strangely compelling in spite of the coin op based, money grabbing difficulty requiring pixel-perfect jumps.
Nintendo Hardware
Cable
AV cable for a Famicom, Super Famicom, N64 or GameCube. Very versatile and from a stable with a good retro history.
PC Engine Hardware
Accessory
A beautiful replica piece of work to turn the humble PC Engine into the LT style. Can be connected to a power source, but will also run with a mobile battery (not supplied) to make the console portable. The screen can also be connected by HDMI cable to a TV negating the need for any conversion jobs on the original PC Engine.
Famicom Cart
Platform
The Battletoad games are very collectable and its easy to see why in this Rare crafted version. Cliched some of the locations may be, but when the execution is of such high standard its easy to see why they become much imitated and rarely bettered. Fun, wholesome action that squeezes every iota out of the hardware.
Miscellaneous Hardware
Accessory
A very smart stand to show off the jewels of your cartridge collection. Works a treat with appropriate lighting, but Genki won’t be held responsible for irate partners.
Mega Drive
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Xiaomei captures the spirit of Kung-Fu Master and takes players through the limestone cliffs of China, dispatching all and sundry with a well placed kick or inch punch to comically fall from the scrolling levels. Great to see the Mega Drive alive and kicking in 2023.
Sega Hardware
Controller
Sound controller from the fine up and coming Columbus Circle stable. Snug ergonomics and nice feel to the button press with snappy black and red contrasting colour scheme.
Nintendo Hardware
Controller
Sound controller from the fine up and coming Columbus Circle stable. Snug ergonomics and nice feel to the button press.
Sega Hardware
Cable
S Video cable for the Sega Saturn with generous length to provide a crisper picture according to many Saturn head.
Mega Drive
Rhythm
Famed for its Famicom revival, Columbus Circle turns its fair hand to the 16Bit circuit with impressive results. Based on a rhythm action premise, there are four games; baseball relies on hitting in time to the beat, the Space Invaders style shooting is again in time to the rhythm, the platform action requires jumping hazards to the music and finally the space defense relies on using the shields at the right time and in the right place. Roll on more MD action.
Super Famicom
Platform
Just like buses, another delightful looking Super Famicom game comes along and gamers of a certain vintage feel their fingertips feeling a lot less arthritic. Kaizou Chounin Shubibinman has fine heritage on the PC Engine and is known as Shockman in the West. This SFC re-release is a very exciting development that will hopefully be well supported and keep the trend going.
Sega Hardware
Accessory
Designed to house the Mega Drive Mini and its cables in one, retro filled carry case to keep it dust and scratch free. Not that its likely to be put away for long…
Famicom Cart
Platform
Another fine discovery from Columbus with fast paced platform shooting action presented to Capcom’s lofty standards. The gameplay seems to have taken on board recent mobile gaming releases with sometimes unforgiving pixel perfect play required. But the boss rushes are like a shoulder massage to gamers of a certain vintage.

Famicom Cart
Action
The classic title involving digging holes, trapping the aliens and then digging them into the ground without getting caught. Comes in new fangles mode with some impressive sprites and the old school version for the real purists. The music is where these Compass Circle titles really excel and this is no exception. Its really possible to feel the love of the developers in this impressive labour of love.
