One on One Beat Em Up
Super shrunk down versions of the Hiryu no Ken series fighters with caricature faces and over the top expressions. Not taking itself too seriously, SD Hiryu still manages to pull a few punches and fight its corner well with interesting backgrounds such as cityscapes with Big Ben all adding to the intriguing of the character roster of nineteen characters. Good, clean fighting fun.

Shoot Em Up
Conversion of the coin op is garishly illustrated in primary colours. Traverse levels in a wee opa opa pod trying to restore peace to the Fantasy Zone. Unusually the levels don’t scroll but are wrapped around and the boss can only be reached through destroying the ten bases first. Thankfully supplies can be procured from passing hot air balloons bringing welcome relief.

One on One Beat Em Up
3D battle fest as the Playstation gets in on this popular N64 series act and with its plethora of special moves and fighting styles there’s never a dull moment. Features unlockable characters and a replay mode to savour your fine timing or cast a critical eye over your bad choice of move. Smashing variety in the backgrounds too with each stage appropriately themed to its inhabitant be it the evil stage or the vast open desert.

This version has more going for it that didn’t make the cut for the English language release. Jammed full of Chinese cultural references, or at least Chinese culture from a Japanese perspective, it can be pretty zany at times.

Action
Draws on ancient history as players do battle with oni style adversaries. Think of the Monkey series and those trying to lead them astray on their quest. The combat works well and its clear to see why it is a cherished with the rose-tinted retro glasses on.

Known as Super Ninja Boy in the West, this version has more going for it that didn’t make the cut for the English language release. Jammed full of Chinese cultural references, or at least Chinese culture from a Japanese perspective, it can be pretty zany at times.

Culture Brain takes inspiration from a pipe dream of Persia in this Middle Eastern infused RPG. The combat is full of action and gets the sabres swinging around and great use of colour brings the vibrancy out.

Sports
Nice chip tunes and sound effects so players know when the ball is going up and also, more importantly, when it is going to drop down for the catch. A very well thought out and nicely presented sports game that covers all bases. Known as Baseball Simulator 1.000 in the West.

Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
A long standing series unlike Genki when surrounded by the thugs in the game who soon gang up on those initially lacking the necessary martial skills. Yet the games appeal is strong as players meet plenty of characters on their way through the platform levels on to a showdown with the big boss. Playing like Double Dragon on platform levels makes for an interesting twist on the side scrolling beat ‘em up.

Whilst Genki may be more like the bowtie wearing and rather rotund referee, we certainly appreciate the sharp skills needed to be able to land the moves as this mixed martial arts fest takes to the ring. A small target appears on the opponents body as to where the hit will land in order to give the pugilists a chance to block and counter making for good, tactical bouts.
